The Meaning of "Ilunkum."
Tho meaning of tho word "bunk
um," or nt least tho impression con
veyod by tho word, has slowly al
tored in this country nt least within
tho last 40 years. It originally meant
according to nil American diction

fit of another. Tho congressional
member for a district of North Car
ohna, named Buncombe, insisted

taxed with his conduct lefendil

his constituents could read, and that.
in fact, he was "talking to mm
combo." This is certainly tho bonse
in which Judge Hnliburton. tho auth
or of "Sam Slick," used tho expres
sion, and our recollection is that In
1840-EO it was so employed within
quotation marks in criticising parlia
mentary Bpeechos.
The Americans, who catch any
much needed phraso of tho kiu'J
with extraordinary quickness, speeu'
ily degraded "buncombe" into "bui
kum."and tho vulgar spelling wa,
slowly adopted in England, but witl
significant change of meaning. The
word being American, and all Ameri
can oratory uttered for effect having
one peculiar note in it, "bunkum1
camo to signify speech uttered sole
ly to attract through its tone of pa
triotic exaggeration. Tho man who
talks bunkum is not talking vague
nonsense or stuff intended to occupy
time, but is uttering "high falutin"
flattery either of tho people or of the
country or of the future which is bo

A Ferocious Little Snake.
To my surprise tho littlo black
snake with yellow polka dotted skin
of India is a ferocious flghtor. Tho
sidewinder, which is ugly enough to
strike terror into tho hearts of tie
bravest, is always anxious to avoid a
conflict, oven when disturbed. On
tho contrary, this littlo black and
yellow snako is pugnacious and ut
terly devoid of fear. Ho is general
ly to bo found by the irrigation
ditches, and whon convenient will
got under a sack and thoro pass tho
night, only leaving his shelter when
tho sun is warm enough to tempt
him out. Tho other morning I pick-,
