Last Sunday the dining room of the Wtllaaiette was a scene of festive plc.su re dui lug the dinner hour that Is rarely seen outside of the best hotels ol metropolitan cities. Afa might be sceu by the list published in jester day's JuUknal a large number of the elite families of the city were present aud the unanimous verdict was that 11 umre complete and pteu'- u ruble, menu could not hnvo been prepared, everything that could lempt the palate being included therein, every dish being prepared I lu the highest art of the i-uisiue and served lu a maimer to challenge the admiration of the most fastidious. It Is to bu regretted that crowded space prevents the publication of the bill of fare in full as was intend ed, but these Sunday dinners of The Willamette, as indeed Its everyday preparations, are making the hotel famous and popular at home and abroad. Accidental SiionnNa. Sunday afternoon Marion Yartier, living 011 the north side of Lake Iabisb, and auother man were out hunting, Yarber's companion having a 22 cal ibre rifle. The ball struck Yarber aud entered at the inside point of the left shoulder blade, glancing upward and continu ing Its course beyond the poer of Dr. Smith to liud it, though he probed six inches. Yurier is not dangerously wounded and will get along alt right. He in about years old aud unmarried. New Hakness Maker. Mr. M. Beemer, of Independence, has pur chased the harness shop of 15. F. PMf, I B Is I K J r ABSOLUTELY PURE (iUI)I) UUTI.llllK r'0:i SALKM. Majority fl he State Hoard of AgricBl- inre Will Favor Liberal I'arsrs. Sunday's Orvgonluu has this to ' f the prospects for tho uext state fair: There ure good grounds for expect ing that n more liberal policy will nereafter prevail, tit least for next year, in the state fair association. There seems to be n disposition on the part of the majority of the board to provide larger pursis for good rac ing events. It is not likely that any p irtion of tliee.-irniugs of the present year lll bedouated towards paying otr the standing debt of the society. The into-est v ill be prompt y paid, but as Mr. Hush, the owner of the. irouudi, does not care particularly about Immediate payment, and as the society can better Invest the money lu extra premiums, such course will likely be pursued. The property is yielding Mr. Bush an annual Income of 8 mt ceut on the investment, and he reeius to be satisfied with that. Among the members ot the board who are In clined toward a libeial policy in the way of premiums are Messrs. T)e Lashmutt, Loonoy, Bybee and Kuiek. They are disposed to favor the ottering of liberal purses for fast horses. The agricultural element has alwayn objected to this proposi lion, but as a matter of experience It has always been found that when large piirnes are tillered, the racing receipts pay for the other premiums. When small ones are ottered the ag ricultural premiums go by default. The bet policy, therefore, appears to be to give a few large purse, like J2,IXX) to $J.o00, for good horses, and not fritter tho money away in so mauy small purses. Oregon Compared. The following is clipped fiom a letter written by a ynuug native of Oregon who is now attending the Northwestern university at JJvan stou, Illinois, hi which Oregon is compared with that ceuntry: "It hometimes seems that we are a long ways from our native land. I frequent ly Hud niyrelf counting the time when we shall turn our steps towartj the sounding sea. While th're are many advantages here that Oregon dues not yet possess, yet the natural resources of the Willamette valley are far ahead ot anything I have seen since I left there. This has been an excep tionally bad year throughout this part of the country for nearly all kinds of farm products, lieuce fruit and vegetables are very high. Ap ples and potatoes are $1.50 per bushel, and peaches Mx to eight d dlars. Most of the peaches here are shipped from California and Oregon. The .veekly visits of the Journal seems most like meeting an old friend. In many respects this is a beiutiful place, nature and money have both doue much to inakei. attractive. The only thing lacking is some of Oregou's excellent mountain sceuery fur a back ground with a few Mt. Hoods with theii fleecy snow caps would make tin scenery complete." The aliove was not written foi publication and the Jouhnal ask the indulgence of the writer for th liberty taken in using it. At thi: Oi'kka Hduijk.
