Gossip for tho JouknaIj Is not very nlutity at Newport, ami yourcorrfapondcut lms been luzlly drifting about and going through the unimportant rou tine of a restful family camp life. There are new arrivals and depart ures to chronicle daily, but I am not much given to personalities. THE SKAI. Among other fnshlonablo and sleek-moustached arrivals arc tLe seal. "We enjoy seeing them sport in the bay all the past week. It is u pleasure to watch their graceful movements in tho water. Tlieli heads pop up here aud there all ovei the bay, they look around and sink beneath the wnve. Sometimes a huge, boiling commotion indicates where one has capltiied a llsh. Old Ushers here say tho seal experience no difllculty in chasing down tin jaluion, most powerful aud swiftest of all llsh, and that seals often gel into and tear a fisherman's net all Io pieces. HAIjy SEALS are splendid pets and in twenty four hours will follow one with the fidelity of a slave. They arc not easily obtained however and are difllcult to keep. A gentleman who lives here tells of taming one, and finally getting tired of it had it car ried out over the bur nnd dropped in the open sea. Tho tout icturned never expecting tobce itagain. Up on landing at tho wharf the llrst obiect to present itelf was the baby seal, and with u piteous whine it demanded to be taken up. It lived around the shore a long time and finally disappeared as winter came on. AN OI.U HUNTER whose cabin is near our camp tells us that ubout tho only way to get a seal by shooting is to aim at the neck. If shot into the throat the head drops down, and the air doet not cscttpo from the body, and it lloats. If only wounded tho seal invariably dlsappcaia, and when floating on the ice-floe it is almost Impossible to kill them so dead that they will not scramble oil into their native clement. Wo women are not intciested in this so much as in tho fact that sealskins cost only $10 apleco when first sold, but tiro sold back to us nt $200 to $300 for a seal cloak, manipulated so that wo do uot know whether it i3 seal we are getting or not. KANOOSKI Is tho name of it large Siberian stag hound brought by the skipper of the Mischief upon returning from a 10- cent sealing voyage. This fine dog was found on an island by that namo in the Arctic seas and has a romantic history. Ho had evident ly belonged to a settler, who with his family occupied tho island. The Indians had some difllculty with tho settler, attacked anil destroyed Ills hut and drovo him and ids fam ily oil tho island. They left Kan ooski behind aud when found ho was nearly Btarvcd, and only too glad to join tho crow of tho sealer, who have brought him to Newport nnd ho is now tt properly naturalized Ameri can dog. Ho stands with his head nearly four feet high, is a powerful nulmnl, but kind as a kitten. He nniusea tho boys by leaping into tho surf after sticks and Is quite a pet. (lucer freaks of Cold Typo. In "making up" newspapers, or tho piecing together of dlllerent paragraphs into columns, two separ ate items will sometimes be jumbled together nnd most amusing results appear. Orders having been Usued by the authorities for tho immediate extension of tho Cemotler de l'nrn asso." Tho New Haven Journal some ago made a curious Jumblo of two Hems. Ono read: "A largo cast Iron wheel, icvolvlng 000 times a minute, exploded lu this city yes tcrtlay after a long and painful lllnea. Deceased was a prominent thirty-second degree Mason." Tho other paragraph detailed how "John McFadden, tho well-known lloiist and real est tto broker,of Newport, H. The state board of arbitration once more pre sented lt3olf perfunctorily lu aid ol a settlement, l'owderiy hastened to accede, but the railroad has de clined. There is a growing belief among persons who follow the course of events closely that there will be no further strike. .State Arbitration Commissioner Donovan lust night yent a letter to Vice-President Webb, stating that it having come to the knowledge of the state board of mediation aud arbitration that au other strike was seriously threaten ed on the line of roads of your com pany he is instructed by the board to again communicate with you, md invite u joint conference in the olllce of your company between you and the representatives of your em ployes, with a view of devising some means whereby the threatened strike may be averted. A similar letter was sent to Pow derly. Powderly In his reply stated that the general executive board of the Knights of Labor is willing to comply with the request and holds Itself In readiness to respond at a moment's notice. Webb came foward last night in a response to the speech of Powderly, with a prepared statement. He started out with tho assertion that no man had been discharged by the company because bo was a Knight of Labor or member of any other organization. Then, for the first time since the beginning of ttic trouble. Webb names a litit ol ollencis among which are those be cause of which tho Knights of Laboi are said to have been di&tfhurgcd. Webb centinues: "The company discharges the men irrespective ol their membership of the order of Knights of Lobor for drunkenness, incapacity, breach of duty, in subordination, and for lack of suffi cient work to employ them, and it will continue to do so whenever proper occasion, aris-e. It would be moral and probably criminal neglect of duty for mo to omit to discharge a switch-tender man for drunken ness, upon whoso sobriety and fidelity to duty depends the safety of life nnd limb of some millions of passengers transported annually by this company. The foregoing gives without setting forth the name or place of employment, tho causes which called for the discharge of the men referred to iu Powderly's appeal. For theso discharges, and to avert a threatened strike, 1 have been called upon by Powderly and his associates to consent to iho mons trous absurdity of satisfying by some kind of arbitration or investigation persons other than the constituted authorities of tho company that these causes existed, 11 demand, which so long as I occupy tho po sition with which 1 11111 intrusted, I feel it Is my duty to firmly decline." The time money is made on real estate is by buying before tho boom. Salem has had no boom, her propeity is still cheap aud there is no possible doubt of her going forward, when the prices have doubled. One Oi"the factors that will insure a return from an investment at Salem is the numerous crop failures in various parts of theMississippi valley, and even as far east as Ohio, which not only depreciates the securities offered by those sections to investors, but will discourage thousands of settlers, who will gather up their effects and start for a region where crop failures are unknown, and the climate is devoid of extreme heat or cold. One general fact is always very potential with thinking men and women, because it is made up of a multitude of other facts all tending one way. That tendency has all been to advances in Salem real estate. Several hundred sales in the past few months all showing sharp advances constitute the "eneralfact of all-around rise in valuations. This is significent to the most dull and at the dull season of the year. IF YOU LEAVE THE) CITY Eveivfor a month and approach it from any direction, upon your return you will express surprise and the conviction will be forced upon your mind that "she grows." When a city has the room to grow m that Salem has, and is spreading out into the surrounding prairies, but one thing will result a great city. Americans love to build a city on a sightly place. On abeautiful river, with natural forest, it is no wonder our city spreads out like another Philadelphia. You need not go to Puget Sound cities to see streets lead out through native forests. That can be seen right here in Salem, where miles of ave neus and streets have been graded this year through natural thickets of evergreens. 7:S0"ii. laiojp.
