Morton $1,750. The damages claimed foriarinallv amounted to SI 4, 000. Mr. Morton alleging that rocks had been deposited by blasting over an exten sive acreage and a water system had been injured. The claims were finally cut down to $3,800, other items having been ruled out of the case because of a condemnation suit filed by the State Highway Commisison for acquiring an approximate eight acres of the land to be used as a dumping ground. Two women. Mrs. E. E. Lage and Miss Bessie Henry, were members of the jury. Meyers, of a Wichita, Kas. fruit firm, declares that he will cer tainly pay the mid-Columbia district another call while out this summer. He says he learned of the beauties and wonders of the Columbia River High way while motoring through last year. WOMAN'S CLUB NEWS At the annual meeting of the Wom an s Club Wednesday or last week, Mrs. J. E. Ferguson was elected pre sident. Mrs. Ferguson was the only nominee for the onice and her election was unanimous. Other officers chosen for the ensuing year included : First vice-president, Miss May Davidson; second vice-president, Mrs. F. A. Olm sted : corresponding secretary, Mrs. H. G. Ball: recording secretary. Mrs. E. O. Blanchar, and treasurer, Mrs. W. H. Chipping. Mrs. Ferguson, who has been prom inent in Woman'! Club work here for the past 12 years and who was form erly president of the Astoria Woman's Club, is also an active Sunday school worker. She was president of the local Countv Sunday School Associa tion for many years, and before com ing here headed the Clatsop associa tion. Van Why, who stated that he was a former Hollander, was on the witness stand testifying about rock thrown on the Morton place by blasts. He described by the statement that the rocks ranged in size from small stones to the size of a beer glass. At torneys asked him to explain how beer glass would compare with the size of a tumbler. Speeder Arrested Traffic Officer ! Murray last Friday arretted Carl Dover, of Oregon City, on a charge of driving 25 miles an hour on dangerous Columbia River Highway curves.
