Jardine. director of tha Oregon Experiment Station, here on Thursday to inspect the branch station, after a tour of the valley with super intendent Childs and Horticulturist Brown, 'stated that damage from the recent cold weather was negligible. was declared that no damage wsa shown in pears and cherries, and that strawberry injury will be limited to the few blossoms already out. this damage will not amount to anything, it is said. Mr. Jardine while here praised the work of the two local men without stint. "I find things in fine shape here gen erally." said Mr. Jardine. "The sta tion s work is above standard, and the conditions of orchards show that all the growers are doing their part to ward application of the most up to date methods of culture. 6. & S. Work will be commenced on the new struc ture, to be 49 by 50 feet, two stories and run basement, at once, it was stated. The new home, which will have five bedrooms, will be finished elaborately. We believe we will be able to tell definitey in the next two weeks whether we can make the climb at the time originally set." PARK GRANGE WILL CELEBRATE FOURTH Park Grange, the membership in which includes orchardists and ranch ers of the Oak Grove, Barrett and Frankton districts, is arranging to stage a Fourth of July celebration, the proceeds of which will be utilized in constructing a West Side community house. It is proposed to make the rur al celebration an attraction not only for residents of all other valley sections but for out of town people. Ihe Park Orange last year secured a wooded acreage near Kockforri store. in the geographical center of the West bide orchard districts, where it is pro posed to locate a neat home for all ac tivities of the West Side orchard dist rict County School cupeintendent L, B. Gibson, member of the Grange, has been named director oi publicity. Patterson Challenges Hall Senator I. L. Patterson, candidate for the Republican nominatiou for gov ernor in the approaching primaries. arrived in Portland last week from his tour of eastern Oregon counties, 36 hours ahead of bis schedule. Senator Patterson remained in Portland await ing a reply from Charles Hall, one of bis opponents in the primaries, to the senator's challenge to meet him in open date and discuss Hall's reputed connection with the Pacific Telephone & Telegraph Company. He spoke at a grange meeting at Odell, where there were present 125 farmers. After visiting other points, he says he receved ae sura nee that he would carry the county. From Odell he went to The Dalles. where he spent a day and delivered an address. Ontario and Vale were visited in Malheur couutv. but no speeches were made, although he met a number of farmers. "My friends in Baker claim a ma jority there for me and even my oppo nents concede Umatilla," was the can didate's declaration. Towns visited in Umatilla county were Free water. Batdeicc Pbooe 2T3 Truck Wrecked On Highway One of the big vehicles of the War ren Truck Co., went over the HiKhway grade near Eagle creek one day last week. The driver reported to Traffic Officer Murray that he had to wreck the car in order to avoid striking a big limousine traveling east along the highway on the wrong side of the road. The driver escaped unhurt. The pass enger car, driven by a man, was rilled with women passengers, it was re ported. Ihe truck driver, so suddenly did the accident occur, was unable to get the license number of the passenger ve hicle. Aug. Mr. Von Hacht, who is taking an electrical course, is an overseas vet eran. Court Acquires Right of Way The county court Thursday secured from R. R. and S. R. Aplin an approx imate acre of Hood River gorgeside Froperty where the Mount Hood Loop lighwav intersects the old East Side grade. The property, for which the owners originally asked $1,800, will be needed for the right of way of the new grade up the gorge. The compromise price was HW. MRS. CASTNER TO GIVE FUND REPORT Mrs. C. U. Castner will give a re port on the endowment fund of the Oregon federation of Women s clubs at the annual meeting in Tillamook May 30-June 2. Members of the Women's clubs from all over the state will attend this meeting. During the business sessions reports will be given by the chairman or each of the six departments, includ ing American citizenship, applied edu cation, fine arts, legislation, press and publicity, and public welfare. Reports will bIbo be given by the chairman of the scholarship loan fund board of trustees and the standing committees and by the president of each club. Mass singing will be a feature of the opening of each session of the conven tion. Ihe program for the convention is being arranged and will include a reception on luesday evening. IS. F. Irvine, of the Oregon Journal, will discuss an educational subject at one meeting and Dr. rJ. O- Sisaon, profes sor of philosophy at Keed College, will speak on ' Americanization. Others speakers and the musical program which Mrs. W. F. Gaskins, wife of the head of the music department at the Oregon Agricultural College, has in charge will be announced later. Lntertainment will be furnished by the people of Tillamook in the form of a trip to Lake Lytle where an after noon session of the convention will be followed by a luncheon and a stroll on the beach. Trips are also planned to visit some of the cheese factories near Tillamook The Southern Pacific railroad comp any will give special low round trip summer rates for those attending the convention which will be in effect in the eastern part of the state as well as the western. 0 "Nu-Waj" Cleanser Is Popular The Western Laboratories, a subsidi ary concern of the Hood River Spray Co., has begun the manufacture on a large scale of a new cleansing prepa ration for motorists and mechanics. The product, called "Nu-way", has al so proven popular with orchardists dur ing the spraying season. It is de clared to be very effective in removing oil and lime-sulphur solutions from the face or bands of those engagad in spraying. Mr. and Mrs. Bell ia Accident Mr. and Mrs. C. A. Bell, both of whom were injured near Salem Sunday before last when the automobile tn which thpv were ridinir went over an embankment, were brought home lt Thursday night. Both were painfully bnii-ed, Mr. lie U sustaining a cracked rib. W. Maddock of Arlington, who ac companied tbem. was also slightly bruised in the accident. Lennox, who died at the Cottage hospital Ihursday night, was shipped to his home at Roseburg Saturday morning by C. C. Anderson. Funeral services were conducted there Sunday afternoon. Mr. Lennox, who was 55 years old and a pioneer of Rose burg, was here engaged with a Port land auditing firm in experting the books of the city. He contracted a I cold a few days ago, pneumonia fol lowing. His death was very sudden. His wife and a son barely had time to I hurry here and be with him a short time before the end. Mr. Lennox was a member of the Masonic fraternity and the Elks' lodge. He was active in all civic affairs of bis home town and took great interest in the fruit industry there. Recently he visited the Glacier office seeking data on the local fruit business. He was preparing an article for his home paper, comparing the industry here with that at Roseburg.
