Freeman Mason, formerly of Hood River, but now in charge of the Experiment Station in New Jersey, who was here last week visiting friends, apples are being sold to mincemeat factories in that Htatc for $100 a ton. The crop is very light in trie east, and many larmers Hre loading the apples loose in box cars and shipping them to the mincemeat factories. I his includes all grades, from the best to the culls, just as they come from the orchard, without pack ing or sorting. Mr. Freeman says he cannot under stand the talk of comparatively low prices and limited demand in the east, or why the buyers are so cautious about bidding for the fruit, as the eastern markets must depend upon the west this year for their apples. The high prices being paid there by the cannert and mincemeat factories is an indication thot western box apples should meet with a ready sale at good prices. Spain's claim was based on the voyage of De Soto un the Mississippi river. France, through the ex plorations of La Salle from the north and the early entry of French priests from Canada, considered this territory theirs. As for England, she rested her claims on the discovery of North America by the Cabots, and In the charter grunted to Virginia Included all the country lying to the West. The French were the first to get a foothold in Ohio, but the English pioneers, who shortly began to drift westward, firm ly established their settlements In the fertile Ohio valley. Af ter a long period of warfare, in which the Indfnns nluved a lending part, the Northwest Ter--ritory was finally ceded to the United Stntes by the Treatv of Independence In 1783. And Vir ginia and other states, which had laid claim to portions of this region turned over their rights to the federal govern ment. The government of the North west Territory was formally created by the ordinance of H87. People from the East mi grated Into this territory in such numbers that by 1803 Ohio was taken Into the Union as the seventeenth state. The fourth largest state In size of popula tion, Ohio has 24 electoral votes for President, while in area, with its 41,040 square miles, It ranks only thirty-fifth, which shows how densely It Is popu lated. It Is noted as the state of Presidents. President Hard ing mukes the seventh Ohloun to fill the presidential office. The name Ohio Is derived from the Iroquois word O-hee-yo, meaning "beautiful river." It was first applied by the Indi ans of the Five Nations to what we now call the Allegheny riv er, one of the chief tributaries of the Ohio. Gradually the name came to Include the whole river, sometimes even being ap plied to the Mississippi. Later it was confined to the river be tween Pittsburg and Cairo, and appropriately the first stote formed on Its northern bank was nnmed after It. Ohio s often called the Buckeye State from Its large number of horse chestnut trees. (by McClure Newspaper Syndicate ) i I The Story of j Our States By JONATHAN BRACE XVIII. French colonies soon sprang up. including New Or leans, which was founded In 1718. An Interesting chapter of Louisiana was the formation ot the Company Of the West by a financial schemer named John Law. This company ostensibly was to exploit the new colony and held out to speculators an alluring get-rlch-qulck scheme. The southern portion of this acquisition was organized as the territory of Orleans and In 1812 was admitted as the eighteenth state of the Union, with an area of 4S,.riOfl square miles.
