IRRIGATION FOR YOUNG FRUIT TREES By Gordon G, blown The writer has observed many places in the valley where young trees set in the old orchara are not receiving prop er care. 1 To begin withj it is recog nized that to establish a young tree I where an old one was removed is diffl I cult. There are various reasons for j this, the chief factor being depleted I fertility. Obviously, therefore, every possible care should be taken if the young trees are to grow in a satisfactory manner. This means plenty of cultivation and irrigation. In many cases, young trees are to grow in a satii'liictory manner This means plenty of cultivation and irrigation. In many cases, young trees are set in an orchard where alial fa, clover or grass is growing. While such a practice is satisfactory as far as the old trees are concerned, harm is sure to result if such crops are allowed to encroach upon the young trees. Clean cultivation at frequent intervals must be given such. This probably means a shovel and hoe and in some cases a pick-axe. The busy orchardist may consider that he can ill afford the time to do such work but unless this is done there is little chance that satis factory growth will result. Further more, irrigation should be amide rees allowed to dry out will not only fail to make proper growth but are also much more subject to winter in jury, this was well demonstrated two years ago. I he writer submits that the investment of sixty to seventy cents in a tree as initial cost is too much to lose. Furthermore, with the best of care seven or eight vears will be necessary before the tree comes in to bearing. At best, it will take long time. Do not prolong this period ol development or sustain failure be ause of neglect. Incidentally the season for irrigation i at hand. This should start right. II the soil dries out it will take much greater effort to maintain uniform moisture than where there is a fairly moist soil to start with. In dry soil, air must be expelled before water can get in, whereas with moist soil cohesion between water particles facilitates this practice.
