Olwell and George Putnam, editor of the Mail Tribune, who Hiiid a year ago that Hie motropoliH of Miutherii Oregon would be aa largo as Portland by July I, Hill. A plensniit, growing, biiHtling city iri Medford, with it beautiful Iioiiich and biiKy hIioih crowding up to itn rich orchardH; it milen of line htrcotn leading to well-kept country roads that take the visitor paHt and through vumI vinlart of fruit-laden tiech; Iioiiich going up everywhere; beautiful hotel almorit fininhed; country club, theatres and all the other evidence of n higher and more expensive civiliratiou. Last week Medford celebrated three imiHirtaut events: The return of Fred Hopkins, the assumption of Medford citizenship of K. A. Iteames, and the oKiiitie; of the splendid coun try club. Anyone of theso import ant eventh would have sufficed an other city for a whole month's cele bration; but big affairs crowd so fast 011 the capital of the ltoguo Hirer valley tint these had to bo bunched. A committee awaited Mr. Hopkins ut the Nash hotel, and offered him the freedom of the city; Gordon Voories made an eloquent sjieech of welcome, in which he said that Portland's loss was Medfurd's gain.. Hciimes was also accorded the freedom of the city, which includes the right to drive an auto at 11 speed not to exceed 10 miles an hour within the corjsmite limits. The opening of the Country club wuh nn important event, and to.ik to tho fine grounds ami beautiful club house 11 great nsM'tnldagc. The organization has 100 acres that are laid out in golf links, tenuis courts, and shooting range. It is doubtful if hi thu northwest, outside of Port land, any city 'has better golf grounds than hns Medford. The of ficers of the club are: President, I. Vawter; vice president, S. V. Heck with; treasurer, A. K. Hosenbaum; secretary, T. E. Daniels, with A. ('. Fiero, h. Carpenter, It. II. Hanaucr, Howard Dudley and It. II. Parsons, directors. Notwithstanding I lie remarkable stories told of tho groat catches of trout in the Itogue river, there arc still some fine fish in that beautiful stream. It is doubtful if even her rich orchards nro nn grcat'a source of wealth to Medford as is the Itoguu river, to which filiormen from all over the country go to catch their largest trout. There are many thing- to be seen and enjoyed in and about Medford; and not the least of the-c arc the six beautiful Aberdeenshire terriers owned by Mrs. Qe6rge Carpenter.
