MEDF01UVS water system is one of its greatest, assets. It vns by Tar the most fur-sighted and progressive aetion ever taken by its eiti.ens. It has quadrupled the number of consumers and more than quadrupled the revenues derived. Instead of there being a monthly deficit, in the water fund, as formerly, receipts this year will be siuticient to pav interest on the entire bonded indebtedness ot the city and provide for a sinking fund. "When Bedford voted to issue bonds to build a gravity water system it had less than 5000 population. It is per haps the only city in the entire nation of that population that had the courage to plunge nearly half a million dol lars in debt for a water system, to follow it up with a sewer system, paved streets and other municipal improvements. The water system consists of twenty-three miles of gravity main with a daily discharge of 4,500,000 gallons, twenty-five miles of cast iron distributing system and a city reservoir with a capacity of 2.000.000 gallons. Its source is in the headwaters of Little 13utte, a stream fed bv the melting snows of Mt. McLaughlin. The supply of water brought in is sufficient for a city of 25,000 or 110,000 people. At present as much is wasted as used. No city in the country has a better water system, none has purer or better water, none has the quantity per cap ita. Portlands famed Bull Run water alone is equal in quality to Medfords Little Butte, but the quantity per inhabitant falls far behind. Ashland's is equal in quality, but deficient in quantity supplied. water is the weak point m Oregon cities. low have a sufficient supply. Fewer still Jiave pure water. There fore,' typhoid epidemics are frequent. The poor water supply is a standing reproach to many Oregon towns. Salem, the capital city, sets an unprogres sive example by supplying citizen and state institutions with germ-laden moisture, unsafe to drink. .Every effort to install an adequate supply of pure water has met de feat at the hands of the mossbacks. Many other cities, naturally more favorably situated than Medford, have fol lowed in her footsteps. The best investment any community can make is a good water system not only on account of the increased health of its citizens and the beauty and adornment of the city itself, but as a remunerative enterprise, returning a good profit upon the investment. fcHiy"rttHrir,ir Koilcf Office or lite City Treitsuror,, Medford, Oickoh, Mnv IS. IFilT ays the merchant to advertise a sale occasionally, it pays him to advertise a sale daily. This has become recognized in the mercantile world and we find the up-to-date merchant is the advertiser, the one who arranges a sale of articles daily and lets the people know about it. Usually at the occasional sale, the price of nearly every article carried is materially reduced. Instead of making these reductions in a lunrp, the wise merchant makes them on an article or two at a time daily, and uses them as "leaders" to attract custom. Then at the season's end he makes a big sale on the surplus articles left from the daily sales. ' ' ' This is the secret of attractive trade and it is respon sible for the growth of so many small stores into big de partment stores. The successful city store cannot be op erated successfully without advertising and the same methods successful in the big city create success in the small town.
