The servioes of an oil ex pert from Spokane have been engaged ; and he will make a report on the con ditions. lev. and Mrs. Geo. T. Ellis left last evening for Baker City for a two weeks' stay. Tbe ladies of the Baptist Missionary society will hold servioes in tbe Baptist church, next Sunday morning and there will be no service in the evening. Mr. Ellis will be home for the following Sunday. Pilot Rook Record : The Record acknowledges the receipt of au invita tion to attend the annual student's banquet, Pendleton Academy, which takes place this evening. On the in vitation is an original drawing of a country editor which looks very much like Clark Wood, of the Westou Leader. ' . Heury M. Gross, an O. R. & N. brakeman, who was horribly mangled by being run over by the O. R. & N. switch engine at Riparia Saturday night, died in the Walla Walla hos pital a few hours after being brought there by special train. One leg was cut oh! by the engine and his skull fractured. Dr. J. S. Ruckman, the new den tist, accompanied by his wife, who is also a dental practitioner, is in the city and will remaiu several days. "A quiet but happy wedding took place Sunday at the home of Mrs. William Vedder, six miles west of '- Milton, when Mr. Thomas Owens was united in marriage to Miss Cora Ved der. Tbe bride was attired in cream silk. The groom is the only son of Mr. and Mrs. Owens, who now reside near Helix and is a brother to Mrs. Claude Reeder and Mrs. Clyde Willa by. After tbe ceremony, which was conducted by Rev. Hard wick, tbe company gat down to a sumptuous wedding dinner. ' (. . , Three sportsmen, names unknown, made a trip to S teen's ranch north of town, Sunday, and bombarded several hundred equirrels, more or less, into eternity. The garden lot at the farm house which is said to be ravaged by the rodents was purposely avoided be cause there was no buttermilk in sight. This delectible beverage had on a former occasion been promised by farmer Burke, but either the cows bad not returned home or the good housewife had neglected to chum. No buttermilk, no squirrels. Weston Leader: Uncle William Lieuallen, who located near Weston in 1864 and is among the oldest settlers of this vicinity, came down town Tuesday to register, this being his first appearanoe on the street for many months. The old pioneer was "warmly greeted while on his way to tbe justice's office. S. W. Read, . who has been kept at home by siokness for three months, also came out on the last registration day to fulfill his duty as a citizen. There will be a hot game of ball in Athena Saturday. Either tbe Butte, Montana or the Spokane League team, will play the Yellow. Kids here on that day. All of the Butte players have not arrived in Spokane yet and in event they do not arrive, aiangements were made this morning with the Spokane team to come here. The Yellow Kids will play the team here Saturday and at Peudleton Sunday. The teams will be iu good condition, will play fast ball and, weather per mitting, large crowds will be in at tendance at the sramefl. Saturday afternoon the children of tbe Baptist Sunday school were given a grand treat in a straw ride. A four- horse team was bitched to a wagon on which was a hay rack, Well filled with straw, on which were seated the happy children, to the, very limit of its capacity .After a two hours' ride througb'fhe country lanes, the team was pulled up at the residence of Mrs. Geo. Foster, where a bounteous lunch had been prepared by the teachers of the various classes. Rev. Ellis ac companied the children on the ride and Frank Berlin was the Jehu for the occasion. t; Freewater Jottings. ; Charles Brinker is erecting a 10 room residence, with all modern con veniences.
