COMING TO THE PEN SPOKANE COUNTY WOMAN WHO COMMITTED ARSON. Created Sympathy During: Trial and Excitement After Sen'ence By Skipping, Wallu Walla, Dec. 7. Word has beeu reoeived at the penitentiary that Dr. Mary Latham, of Spokane, is awaiting transportation to tho peui teutiary to serve her sentence. She was convicted of arson, committed near Mead, and was sentenced to a term in the penitentiary. During the trial she managed to create a great deal of sympathy for herself, by alleg ing that the confinement was telling oil her and that she was not in good health. About half the time she had to be brought into court on a stretcher and everybody sympathized with her. At the time she was sentenced she was carried iuto court, looking wan and pale, and when souteuee was pro nounced everyone thought it was cruel. She seemed so bad that, by order of the court she was allowed to stay at a frieud's home for a few days to recuperate. She went out driving one day and hit for the Idaho Hue as fast as the horse could go. For two weeks all the sheriffs in northern Idaho were huuting her, and she seemed to have completely disap peared. Finally a sheriff found her in the woods iu the northern part of Idaho, and stayiug with a family. To the sheriff she said she had merely gone there to rest She was taken buck to Spokane and put iu jail, as the officers wanted her for a witnass in another case that was to be tried last fall, and rather than have to transport her both ways they kept her in the county jail until tho other trial was over. Captain linker Return From Orient and Talks of Situation There. Captain Baker of the cruiser Kaleigb who has beeu detached for several mouths to study conditions in China, is euroute to Washington where he will lay the result of his investigation before the president. Captain Baker says it is ah nonsense to talk of the boycott dying out. The situation in Chiua is controlled by 71 guilds who have given orders not to handle American goods. The ware houses iu Cauton, he says, are fall of American flour; In the menu time the Australians are rushing iu au inferior flour to take advantage of our difficulty. The Chinese merchants admit our flour is superior but aro prepared to make the sacrifice for principle. Baker states the boycott is just uow reaching the interior, and if declared off now, it would take a year for the news to reaeh the provinces up the river. Captaiu Baker goes on to say not only the Australians, but the Jap anese are taking advantage of the boy cott. The Japanese are establishing cotton mills in China aud with cheap labor are in a position to drive us out of the field. He expects our vast kerosene and steel business to be taken over by the Japauese as well. . The only t hing will be to resciud the Chinese exclusion laws and this he says will uot be done. . Captaiu Baker couclndes, "the boycott is get ting worse every day." A Fearful Fate. It is a fearful fate to have to eu dure the terrible tortures of piles. "I can truthfully say" writes Harry Coltou of Mason ville la., "that for blind, bleeding, itching and protruding piles Bucklen's Arnica Salve is the best cure made.
