Chamberlain. Rev. David Husband, of Sumner, Wash., representing the Christian Standard, is in the city the guest of J. W. Jenkins. Wednesday night the Kebekah lodge of Milton initiated seven candi dates. After the business was tran sacted cake and coffee were served. There will be a game of baseball in Aibena tomorrow. The high school team will endeavor to scalp a team selected from material about town. The assessed valuation of property iu Pendleton school district No. 16, is 1,750,828.25. District No. 29, Athe Mercantile Co. rrem Athena, Oregon na, is second in the county with a to tal assessed valuation of $310,095.75. Milton district No. 31, is third with 1337,162.75. Miss Frankie Williams and John G. Hickman, were married Sunday even ing at the home of the bride's mother, Mrs. O. L. Fields, three miles east of Milton. ' Charles Baddeley was .in town yes terday from his Pine creek ranch. Mr. Baddeley will have a number of light harness horses ready for sale in the spring. Mrs. Albert O'Harra, of Weston, has sold to Charles Prioe 240 acres of land for $18,500. Mrs. O'Harra will invest in Adams county, Washington, wheat land. E. Taylor finds good grazing for his cattle in the stubble fields, but water scarce. Yesterday he took a water tank to the Bell fields and will draw water from a well. The Auxiliary of the C. W. B. M. will meet in the parlor of the Chris tian chnroh Saturday at 2 p. m. All the members are requested to be pres ent and all others are cordially in vited. ; . The Exposition Concert Co. appear ed at the opera house last evening. The company was billed on a day's notioe, and for this reason the attend ance was not so large as it might have been. The grocers sold nearly half of them to customers yes terday afternoon and today the bal anoe are melting away. The apples are free from flaw and have an ex cellent flavor, Mr. and Mrs. Curry, eye sight specialists of Walla Walla who have been making regular trips to Athena, will make their next visit Tuesday Nov. 21, for one day only, at the St. Nichols hotel This is a good oppor tunity. They guarantee their work. Mr. and Mrs. Curry have made regu lar visits to Athena for the past three years. Eyes examined free. John Thompson has brought his stock down from the mountain ranges to the stubblefields, where grazing is now generally good. Water is the handicap to ranging stock in many of the fields this fall, and iu some in stances water in wells is being re sorted to. Mr. Thompson will move bis family to Weston for the winter finding rent obeaper there than in Athena. Alleging that bis good reputation as a citizen and councilman has been held up to ridioule and contempt by reason of a series of articles appear ing in the Daily Union during the past five months. William Glasford, coun cilman from the first ward, Walla Walla, commenced libel proceedings against the Union Printing and Pub lishing company late yesterday after noon. Damages aggregating $20,000 are asked for. Recorder Chamberlain's offloe re sembled the appearanoe of a pawn shop yesterday morning. A choice collection of gloves and watohes, the property of three Indians were ar ranged in display on one of the offloe tables. The Indians, in company with Jim Kanina, another red skin, had imbibed firewater, and fearing the prowess of Jim and knowing his propensity for other iujuns' property, placed their belongings in Mr. Cham berlain's possession for safe keeping. ffhe e supposition is there is a hard winter ahead of us. With this sup position staring us in the face comes the intelligence that a fuel famine has been ushered in. Athena may find herself in the grasp of the famine like Boise and Baker City. The manager of the- Umatilla Lumber Yard, dealer in fuel here, reports that he is short on both wood and coal. Yesterday he had but little over a cord of wood and no coal.
