A.11 commnnlcattom aboold be addressed to i PRKB8 Athena, Oregon ATHENA, NOVEMBER 10, 1905 Everything indioates a wide range of activity on tbe part of tbe Athena Commeioial association for tbe com ing year. The advantage of conduct' ing tbe association on more social lines is beginning to be recognized. Membership is not so bard to obtain as the obstacle tbat is confronted in holding members in the association. This problem has been encountered at Pendleton, where tbe roster of the commercial association has been in creased by 406 new names. To alle viate to some extent at least, the cold, formal business meetings of tbe com mercial body, Pendleton has gone to the expense of establishing a gymna sium, in the hope that in addition to organization's billiard room, card tables and reading room advantages, tbe large membership may be retained to assert in tbe np-bnilding of the town. The Athena association can not, for the reason of limited room, hope for a gymnasium, but the cost of card tables would be nominal while the convenience of reading matter could be obtained by donation on the part of members, several of whom have expressed a willingness to con tribute periodicals, newspapers and magazines. To make the commercial association a success, Athena finds, like other places, she must inculcate a measure of sociability in tbe organiz ation. Many jests will be made about tbe man who surrendered his pension be cause he has become a Christian Scientist, and the illness on which his claim for a pension was baaed has disappeared. Yet the man is an ex ample of soldierly patriotism and honor. He deals as squarely with the government as a decent man deals with another individual. It is only the comparative rarity of this sort of conscientiousness which refuses to ac cept undeserved money from the gov ernment whioh makes it a fit subject for tbe paragraphors. One hundred acres of land has been added to tbe now already large acre age of the Blalock Fruit company near Walla Walla. It will be used in connection with the extensive orch ards and gardeu land already owned by tbe couipauy. The cynical Laboncber, writing in Loudon Truth, asserts thaf'the Amer icans, in spite of their reputed shrewd ness, are tbe most easily gulled of any people on earth by thoso who kuow how to get at them." Is this merely n railing accusation without founda J lost There probably is notfa reader of this paper who will n'ot want to buy some houso furnishing atriole or other between now and the holidays. So it is proper for a store that feels quite sure it is better able to serve yon than any other to have a word with you at about this time. The rapid almost phenomiual increase in our business would indicate that we are at least pleasiug a Rreat majority of the buying public; and for this we tool highly gratifle and thankful. Our customers always come the seoond aud third time, and this, of couise, is the basis of our success. We want, therefore to talk to those who have uot tried trading here as yet. We want to say to you, TRY. If we do not make your trading both profitable and pleasaut we incur a great business risk, for to have a disappointed customer is about the worst thing that can happen to a store. There will from now till the holidays, be a whole lot of valuable, sensible store news from here. It will be news tbat thritty and thinkiug housewives will appreciate and profit by. We'll be right glad and so will you if you accept this invitation to be a Davis-Kaser customer. Mail Orders a Specialty THE DAVIS-KASER CO. Everything to Furnish the Home. 12 14-16-18 30-22 Alder Street, WALLA WALLA, -: WASH. tion or has it a modicum of truth T Verily, there bavs been times when it seemed that certain elements in our population were easily snared. . Get-rich-quick schemes promising 100 per cent profit every year have found do lack of patrons. But this is only vul gar finance and promoting that tbe lambs are shorn with neatness and dispatch. In portions of the Paciflo Northwest farmers' clubs have been and are be ing formed for the coming season, whioh is certainly a most excellent idea. These organizations should be numerous as they are of great benefit in the social, intellectual, and moral improvement of those numbered among their numbers and show tbat tbe farmers are imbued with the spirit of progressiveuess which should pre vail on every hand. Wherever these clubs are found there also is the tele phone and ru al free mail and good roads. "The igorrote,'' remarks the Port land Oregonian, "is visible to the naked eye." Be is, dear boy. Also, if memory serves us, he is naked to tbe visible eye. Son Lost Mother. "Consumption runs in onr family, and through it I lost my mother," writes E. 13. Beid, of Harmony, Me. "For the past five years, however, on the slightest sign of a cough or cold I have taken Dr. King's New Discovery for Consumption, which has saved me from serious lung trouble." His mother's death was a sad loss for Mr. Beid but be learned that lung trouble mnst not be neglected, and bow to cure it Quickesjt relief and cure for colds. Price 50o aud fl. Advices from tbe East state that the rush of "colonists", to the Paciflo Coast since tbe inauguration of speci al rates is far in excess of any pres vious movement of this n atnre. It is the opinion of railroad men, who keep in close touch with tbe factors enter ing into this business, that no small portion of this iuorease is due to the magnificent advertising given ; tbe entire Paciflo Coast through the Lewis and Clark exposition. This, of course, was one of the results expeoted when the patriotio Oregonians subscribed the money that started the great en terprise, but it is doubtful if the most optimistic of our people , expeoted such an overwhelming success from au advertising standpoint. The croak ers aud knockers, who, like the poor, are always with us, quite naturally donned the long fact and predicted a terrible slump at tbe close of the fair. Acting on their advice, a great many people postponed purchasing property whioh was actually needed for busi ness aud residential purposes, hoping to seoure it at greatly reduced prices as soon as the anticipated slump in values took place. They have waited too long, and never again will it be possible to se cure such bargains in any kind of property as were on tbe real estate counters when the fair opened. And, in spite of the advance already scored, the movement steadily increases, and, with so mnch new oapital coming into the country, values, are certain to roach much higher figures. What is true of the situation in the city is also trne of the country, for on the pros perity of tbe couutry tbe city is help lessly dependent, and can never grow or prosper unless similar growth aud prosperity is in - evideuce in the couutry. Not all of tbe colonists that are now coming into the West will remain with us, for with them will be numbered a few of tbe same stripe as our own croakers. This class has Mail Orders a Specialty been coming and going since tbe days of Whitman and MoLoughlio-. The country bad no charms for their pre decessors fifty years ago, and it has none for them today, but there -are enough coming who recognise the ad vantages of this country to offset Jail of the knocking that - can - be done by those who do not - - Oregon, Washington and Idaho are now marketing a grain crop which, after making due allowance for the requirements tor seed and home con sumption, will add to jthe circulating medium in the three states more than $30,000,000. The lumber output of the three states for 1905 will exceed by hundreds of millions of fee the out put of any previous year. The wool clip and the hop yield also broke all previous records, and the annual crea tion of new wealth by the products of the field, forest and farm in the three states is greater per capita than that of any other region in the United States. All this has been accom plished while we labored under a handicap of insufficient transporta tion, and, now that we are about to be provided with means for opening up to settlement and development regions of greater extent and equal richness with those which have made such a remarkable showing, both city . and country throughout tbe three states will grow more rapidly than ever be fore. Long before the effect of tbe enor mous expenditures which the railroad companies will make in providing new lines has been exhaused.we shall begin reaping tbe richer and permanent re turns which will follow the develop ment of the vast country that is now lying dormant Portland and the en tire Paciflo Northwest are on - tbe eve of a period of industrial expansion and prosperity such as we have never before known, not even in the palm iest days of tbe Villard boom, whioh suffered limitations such as are im possible with tbat whioh is now com ing.
