IN THE EAST END HEWS FKOM WESTON, ADAMS MILTON AND FREE WATER. Doing of Yonr Neighbors As Told In Columns of the Leader, Advance, Eagle and Times. Weston. (Weston Leader. ) A son was born Tuesday morning May 4, 1905, to Mr. and Mrs. Ed Mitchell, at their home on Pine creek near Weston. Born, Tuesday, May 2, 1905, to Mr. and Mrs. G. W. Brown, at their home in this city, a daughter. Charles M. Long, who resided at Weston some 25 years ago, died May 1st at his home near Tonchet, Wash. The remains were conveyed to La Grande for interment Charles DuPuis has disposed of his interest in the grocery and bakery business of DnPnis & Co., and thinks of going to La Grande. The firm name will remain unchanged, and its management is continued by B. F. DuPuis. Mr. and Mrs. J. B. Keeney were guests of Mrs. I. E. Saling Sunday while on their way to Camas prairie, Idaho, where it is hoped that Mr. Keeney 's health will be benefitted by an outing. He is an old pioneer and stage man of Eastern Oregon. Dr. M. V. Turley has returned from the vicinity of Bond, Or. , where he has been looking after his homestead interests, and has resumed his prac tice at Weston. Mrs. Turley will re main at Bend until she accompanies the doctor ou a vitdt to the Portland exposition. Arrangements have been completed for the educational exhibit at the Lewis and Clark fair. Assignment of space has been made, including two sides of wall of room devoted to state iusitutions, and a sufficient floor space for cabinets. Petitions are being circulated for the prevention of Sunday ball games at Weston, by Mrs. J. H. Read and Mrs. Polly Purcell. The petitions are addressed to the city council and also to the board of regents of the state normal school, as the school grounds have been occasionally used by town teams for Sunday games. The W. C. T. U. is behind the movement. I. II. Martin has been at work for several weeks on the mountain road leading east from Weston with a force of men as deputy for George W. Staggs, district supervisor. Much im provement has been made ou this high way, which now affords easier travel for mountain people. The Moore house hill has almost disappeared, the Beathe hill is reudered less difficult, and rocky portions of the road were covered with dirt. The spring cam paign in this district is now complet ed, and Dry creek is receiving the attention of the roudniakers. One of te finoBt musical and liter ary programs ever presented in the Eust End was heard in the beautiful new society hall of Athona Friday by the fortunate guests of the Rathbone Sisters there. The entertainment was of a high class order throughout, and several of the selections were of ex ceptional merit. Johnson's orchestra contributed to its success. Ice cream and oake were served in the banquet ing hall at the close of the exercises. Stephanie Temple of Weston was largely represented having received a spooinl invitation. Milton. (Milton Eagle.) President Porry hus returned from Richland, whore he delivered an ad dress to the graduating class of the hiirh school of that wince; Deputy Assessor Waldou has com- J pleted the census of Milton City and found an even 990 residents withiu the corporate limits. This number represents the uctnal Ixina fide resid ents of the town and could be padded out to one thousand. The little child of Charles Sanders, who was so severely scalded last week, is reported by Dr. Thomas, the attend ing physician, as being on the road to recovery. The scalded llesh hus started to heal and the little one is considered out of danger. From preseut indications strawberry pickers will le scarce and induce ments are offered to people to come from a distance and engage in this work. Uood camping grounds will bo furnished free of charge. The season lusts from six weeks to two months and women and children can earn from one to two dollars per day. Mrs. W. R. Craig is recovering from the injury sustained by the run away team last week iu a way to sur prise and delight her many friends. Her head, which was severely out uud bruised, has eutirely healed. Her elbow has improved sufficiently to allow her to move the arm, and while not able to bear auy weight on her foot, she can move across the room by aid of a chair. Freewuter (Freewater Times). J. W. Gliddou, a former resideut of this J city, but who has been residing at Echo the past few months, returned here Wednesday evening. ' N. W. Mumford picked some ripe Hood River strawberries on his place last Sunday. Some of tbeui measured nearly two inches across. And that's going some for ApriL W. M. Wagener, who has been re siding in this section for the past three years, left yesterday for his old home in Ohio where he will probably remain permanently. This week George Jennings received a $1000 beneficiary check from the Maccabee supremelodge at Port Huron Mich. , his late wife having been a member of the lodge at this place. C. G. Rogers' underground irriga tion ditch is proving to the farmers that there is more than one way of getting water for irrigation purposes besides being in "cahoots" with Elam. The ditch is now supplying 45 miners' inches of water, enough to thorough ly irrigate the ground he has in culti vation. A number of the farmers have thought of such a scheme to se cure wator but none of them had the pluck and nerve to go ahead with the proposition. It remained for Mr. Rogers to demonstrate what that kind of a ditch would do. Lack of space prevents us giving a lucid descrip tion of the workings of this under ground canal, but at a later date tho matter will be gone into thoroughly. Saved By Dynamite. Sometimes a flaming city is saved by dynamiting a space that the fire can't . cross. Sometimes a cough hangs ou so long you feel as if nothing but dynamite would cure you. Z. T. Gray, of Calhoun, Ga., writes: "My wife had a very aggravated cough, which kept her awake nights. Two physicians could not help her. So she took Dr. King's New Discovery for consumption, coughs and colds, which eased her cough, gave her sleep and finally cured her." Strictly scientific cure for bronchitis and la grippe. Fernandez, of Tampa, Flo. , describing his fearful race with death, "as a result of liver trouble and heart disease, which had robbed me of sleep and of all interest in life. I had tried many different doctors and several medicines, but got no benefit until I began to use Electric Bitters.
