XAlex McDonald and family, of Man toba, are expected in Athena this week to visit relatives and friends. The Thaip residences have been re cently painted by L. J. Robinson, and another good job is scored by L. J. Engineer Miller returned yesterday from Corvallis, where he has been en gaged to put in a new water system. St Mra. Wes Ward and children ar rived from Colfax yesterday morning and are guests of her sister, Mrs. Chas. Gay. ' ' Mrs. G. D. Foster, who was a dele gate to the Women of Woodcraft con vention in Los Angeles, has returned home. Mr. Fred Miller, of Spokane, trav eling salesman for a paper house of ; that city, spent Saturday with friends in this city. Mrs. Theo Banner, of Pendleton, came up Sunday and spent the day with her husband, Mr. Danner, the photographer. Mr. W. S. Perry, of Pendleton, with his little daughter, Minnie, spent Sun day at the home of Mr. and Mrs. George Bannister. Marshal Gholson yesterday repaired a crosswalk on Main street, that for sometime has been a source of annoy ance to pedestrains as well as teams. yFnr aritii f rn Athena, Oregon Miss Neah King.'of Weston, visited at the home of her cousin, Mrs. J. Lee Hiteman, who for sometime has been a commercial traveler, has quit the road and is now engaged in the grocery business at 1035 Folsom street, San Francisco. The graduating exercises and com mencement program of Columbia college is now in progress at Milton, and will conclude on Wednesdav evening, May 10. Arlington Appeal: Mra George S. Smith returned Friday from a ten; days' visit with her daughter, Mrs. Ralph Ashpaugh, at Athena, and with friends in Pendleton. ., ' )C.Mrs. James Woodruff and baby came in from the farm Saturday even ing and spent a day or : two at the home of her parents, Mr. and Mrs. Wm. Tompkins, in the city. At the Christian church Sunday, three wexe added to the church. This is very encouraging to Pastor Jenkins, who is preaching each Sunday very interesting and helpful sermons. Mrs. Will McCollum left last night for Pendleton, where she will spend several days visiting friends before pro ceeding to Corvallis, where she will spend the summer with her parents. The Christian church Sunday school is making arrangements to have a grand picnic in the near future. Committees have been appointed, and the time and place will be announced soon. case of J. S. Harris vs. Charles wilks, brought in Justice Woods' court at Weston and changed to Justice Chamberlian's court in Athena, has been settled by compromise, Mr. Wilks paying the costs. J. W. Smith, accompanied by John S. Norvell, the Helix hardware mer chant, drove over from Helix Satur day evening, returning Sunday. Mr. Smith reports that the rain of last week greatly benefitted the growing crop. F. G. Conley, who is at the head of the Inland Empire news bureau, for the Portland Daily Journal, was in town yesterday and secured the ser vices of Miss Edythe McBride as sub scription solicitor and correspondent in Athena. Miss Nettie Cannon, a popular and efficient teacher in the Athena public school, has been elected by both the Pendleton and Walla Walla school boards. Her election at Pendleton came without solicitation on her part, but the Walla Walla position, which pays f 65 per month, she may consider. Friday a pleasant dinner party was enjoyed at the hospitable home of Mr. and Mrs. Henry Schmitt, west of town. Those who were fortunate enough to be present were: Mr. and Mrs. Wm. Tompkins and Rev. and Mrs. Ed Baker and children. The party not only enjoyed a sumptuous dinner, but lingered until late in the evening, and took supper as welL j Decoration Day, Tuesday, May 80, f is to be appropriately observed in Athena. Bradley, who was a delegate to the convention of the Head Camp, Woodmen of the World at Los Ange les, returned Sunday morning. Mr. Bradley, who takes great .interest in lodge work, was afforded much pleas ure in the proceedings of the head camp, and also the trip, which includ ed many points of interest. . The infant child of Mr. and Mrs. Saunders, which was reported in the last issue of the Press to be in a pre carious condition, is no better, but is now suffering constantly with spasms and but little hopes are entertained for the little one's recovery. This is a very sad case, as Mr. and Mrs. Saund ers are here visiting the parents of the latter,' Mr. and Mrs. John' BelL J Justice of the Peace O. G. While Ada, the six year old daugh ter of Freeman Staley, of Chataroy, Wash., was playing around a blazing stump, her clothing caught fire and she was so badly burned that she died in terrible agony a few hours later. Williams and Lane Mayor George IL Williams was nominated for mayor by the republi cans of Portland Saturday in the pri mary election leading his . nearest opponent, H. R. Albee by 1000 votes. Dr. Harry Lane received the demo cratic nomination for mayor, having nearly three to one over George H. Thomas. Meeting of the C W. S. M.
