The following from the Pendleton East Oregonian is a sentiment that uni versally exists in Eastern Oregon: What's the matter with the Multno mah county delegation and Portland business men and commercial bodies? At several enthusiastic development league mass meetings held during the past year, Portland has professed to be the friend of government irrigation and has repeatedly pledged herself to do everything reasonable within her power to clear the way for government irriga tion. At the recent banquet and talkfest of the Commercial club, these pledges were voluntarily repeated and great in terest was shown in the subject. But when it comes to a "showdown" in the legislature, where Portland must uncover her motives, where is she found on the subject of irrigation? What did she do to help Eastern Oregon secure a modem irrigation code? She sat like a mummy, speechless, tonguetied, passive and heedless to the interest of the state as an Alaskan totem pole I She never raised a hand while the enemies were striking the Cole irri gation bill dead in the committee room, Portland is a great "developer," when it comes to pumping hot air into Eastern Oregon's ears, and making pregnant promises that coBt nothing. She loves Eastern Oregon about as fer vently as Bill Dalton loved a railroad train it depends altogether on the booty in sight. Portland had an opportunity to show her genuine friendship for Eastern Ore gon by passing the Oole irrigation bill. The passage of that bill meant the ex penditure of perhaps $3,000,000 in gov ernment irrigation works in the state in the next two or three years. Did she raise a hand to help, although her pledge was recorded at the organization of the Development League that she would help? Did any Portland paper raise its voice for a good irrigation law? Did any of them urge the passage of a measure which was intended to open the door of government irrigation in the arid coun ties? Not a word. Not a mention of irrigation legislation! The next hot air artist who comes cavorting over Eastern Oregon telling what Portland will do and how Portland loves the Eastern Oregon counties, her granary and money chest, the people should close their doors against him, and send him home with a message that only by performance, and not by prom ises, can Portland "square" herself with the bunchgrass counties. A London writer says that a German paper manufacturer at Essenthal has just made an experiment to see how rapidly it is possible to transform a tree into a newspaper., - Three trees in the neighborhood of hia factory were cut down at 7:35 in the morning. They were instantly barked and pulped, and the first roll of paper was ready at 9:31. It was lifted into an automobile that stood waiting and conveyed to the ma chine room of the nearest daily paper. The paper being already set the printing began at once, and by 10 o'clock pre cisely the journal was on sale on the streets. The entire process of trans formation had taken exactly two hours and twenty-five minutes. Every county in Eastern Oregon has arranged to ma te an exhibit at the Lewis and Clark fair except Grant coun ty. From every point of view Grant county can make an exhibit that will equal that made by any county in the state, and it is a shame that the county will not be represented among the ex hibits in the Oregon building. Blue Mountain Eagle. W, L. Douglas the newly elected gov ernor of Massachusettes, whose photo graph is familiar to every child in the land, is credited with the following ad vice for boys: "Be honest, faithful, in dustrious, save your money." Prof. Ross, of the Nebraska Univer sity, says every family should have four children. Parents who have already ex ceeded the limit may adopt their own plans for getting rid of the surplus. Wilson, in Tillamook county, Oregon, has the reputation of being the wettest town in the United States. Rain fell there during the year 1904 to the depth of 136 inches. King Alfonso wants a rich wife. Rich American mothers should not put a queen's title beyond the effort of money as a matchmaker. The New York Herald gives the time ly information to a correspondent that while he does not write it O'Yama, he fights as if he did. When it comes to producing feverish sensations America's Dukes seem to be right in it with the English nobility. Dr. A. B.
