Brought Him to Time, "You are not going to stay down town late to-night, are you, John?" "Not very late, Maria. I have to help put a man through the third de gree at lodge. Pll come straight home as soon as it iB over." (Kindly, but Urmly) '11 you can repeat the password, 'Six slim slick saplings,' distinctly when you come home from the lodge, John, the out sideguardian will admit you, and if you can't you needn't ring any alarm at the outer door. You'll stay on the outside all night, my dear." (John came home early.) The Hong Chong Co., of Portland, filed suit in the circuit court yesterday afternoon, against the 'Pacific Con struction Co. and W. H. Parker, claim ing $8,868.14: are due them for wages due workmen on the line of the road. The suit has nothing to do with the Astoria & South Coast road which is financially ready and willing to pay all legal claims against it at any time. The Pacific Construction Co. is under contract with the Astoria '& South Coast road to do certain woik, the money to be paid them upon the com pletion of the contract Such inci dents are a part of a railroad, and occur in the history of every similar undertaking. The question of lights on vessels in the river is a mixed one, sometimes. Several years ago, an inspector of the Astoria custom house, observed that a British ship, in the stream, had no light displayed, one night. He re ported it to the office, and the captain of the lime juicer was fined $200, which he paid under protest The case was appealed to the secretary of the treasury, who remitted the fine. It appears that the regulation requir ing vessels to display lights applied only to American vessels, and British or other foreign vessels were not bound by' its provisions. While Capt McGee of the tug Co lumbia, and Capt Cornwall of steam er June were on the" Gardiner beach last Saturday they came across the body of Mr. Marshall, proprietor of the Coos bay cannery who was on the illfated tug Fearless which was wrecked off the TJmpqua over a month ago. The surrounaings showed that that he got ashore through the fearful breakers alive and was trying to get to an old camp but in his exhausted con dition he had gone but a few steps and fell across a log and died. The body was placed in a box and sent to Coos bay. A party of six laborers on the Oreg on Pacific railroad, made up a pool this month and bought $30 worth of Louisana tickets. One of their tick ets, which were fortieths, drew the capital prize of $600,000, one-fortieth of which was $15,000, which the men will get. They have announced their intention of staying Tight at work. The ticket drawing the 15,000, the Albany Herald says, was forwarded for collection last Saturday.
