(Jnecr Pacts RrcalD.l !j the Proiaic Reconli la the Linn County Court Hou.e There has been yoiug Ihe rounds ot j the coast papers, a romantic story of how a youug man, engaged in "the J marble monument basinesaJiad vis- I ited tho residence of a wealthy widow I lady somewhere in the Willamette valley, with the ostensible purpose of obtaining a few week's board and ' recreation, but w ith the real motive of procuring an order ior a monument for the departed husband of tho lady. The story goe on to relate that the young man made himself so useful and pleasing that he won the good graces of the iady to tho extent that she finally announced her intention of making him her heir, thus nominally placing in his hands property valued at nearly 20,000. At first the young man objected, but finally acquiesced, and remained upon tho farm, taking the best care of everything, and treat ing the old lady with the greatest respect, care and attention, even with affection. The query has been, where are the real actors in this romantic episode located, and is there really any truth in the story? In answer to this query, says tho Albany Herald, it may be said that the location is in Linn county, on tho Willamette river a mile below Harris burg, and the fact as far as the lady endowing the young man with her wealth is concerned is true. A few years ago, an aged and highly respec ted German citizen, Charles Roth, died leaving the bulk of his property to his esteemed and true wife, Martha Both. Left alone at tho old homo stead, where for yeare tho generous hospitality of Mr. and Mrs. ttoth has been well known and remombered, especially by the steamboat men, who used to ply upon the river much more than at present, and frequently made the Both landing a stopping place. Mrs. Both found her lot very lonely indeed. "What wonder then, that when a voting man asked for hospitality at her house, which she had always been accustomed to lavishly bestow, and treated her with such tender regard, that she should wish to retain his careful attention, and having neither kith nor kin of her own on whom she could bestow her property, that she should give it to him in concidera tion of his care during her lifetime. The proof of this somewhat remark able state of facts is found upon tho prosaic records of Linn county, in July last, wherein Martha Both deeded, to Egbert O. Lake her landed property, retaining a life dower in it. If tho young man has the stamina of true manhood he will faithfully cherish and care for her as long cs she lives, which, up to date, he seems tc have been doing. If he has any compunctions of conscience arising from the fact that he fell heir to a fortune through trying to cultivate the generous old lady's acquaintance for the mercenary purpose of sailing a tombstone for her departed husband, ho should make amends for it by tak ing good care of tho farm and his ben efactress.
