Jeff Davis was not hanged on a sour apple tree, as loudly prophesied by marching millions through the civil v:ar, but died in peace, a genera tioa after the close of the civil strife. His burial last Wednesday should be the burial also of -whatever of bitter ness remains of the contest that was on -when many of the men of to-day were boy6. The civil war knocked rudely at many doers: some of the "same name and kin rode with Sherman to the sea, and "with Stonewall Jackson in the valley of Virginia. Some men's noble sons wore uniform?- of dif ferent colors. Some may now think that the different parts of our country cannot closely come together again. Why not? A well healed wound often looks well, and doe3 not disfigure a manly face. Historic na tions must have their scars. This great country which we all love, or should love, can never again wear the bright, unmarked, characterless face of childhood. A century of national achievements, and national sor rows, must leave their deeply graven signatures. Our common inotiier'b face is historic. The well healed wound must not show a trace of either chronic passion or present pain. Let it be at once a his tory and a prophecy. Let that face, the fairest to our eyes, of all the na tions of the earth, wear henceforth an expression which the world can rev erently interpret If this can be ac complished, the death of Davis may partially atone for much of the evil thai his life wrought. Scmt: of the members of the Cali fomii congressional delegation are in m of adopting some method to it illegal immigration of Chi- heros the Canadian border. jpposed io issue certificates to hinasi who is enumerated ?e cu us, wnicnwui do maae next Jaue, r.nd afler the expiration of six months every Chinaman found m tali c uutry without a certificate is i) be sent out of the country. It is estimated that there are about 150,000 Chinamen in this country, and it is claimed immigration is going on in hpitc of the law against it Where to get a house to live in, is a present question in Ajstoria. The demand exceeds the supply, and from present appearances will continue to exceed it. Prominent among Astoria's needs Is a realization on the part of those having money to spare, o the profit resultant from the supplying of houses that can be built for $1,000 apiece and rented for 20 a month. If the public spirit does not exist, the more sordid impulse should impel the effort to supply the present and prosoeeftve demand. TJSSFUI, INTOmiATIOX. Tllbcry For, :I. D., the eminent medical vriter, in Lis work " Skin Diseases," thns ac couats for the pimples so common to the face aad neck. Eating too rich or too greasy food, or too hearty eating while tho ex cretory organs are sluggish, causes in most people indigestion or a dyspepsial condition, which causes the blood to move tluggiahly, nd enfeebles tho pores. The result Is, that tho eluding secretions block ia tho pores, which iaSame, each distinct inflammation being a pimple. Dr. Foz therefore does not prescribe "blood purifiers" so called, but a " dyspepsia cure" to be taken, to usa his own words "UU the dyspepsial symptoms have dtiappca'cd " The old idea was, that face eruptions were caused by a " humor in the blood," for which they treated the blood, glvlDg the mineral, potash. Joy's Vegetable Earsaparilla follows the modern ideas of Dr. For, and aims with gentle regetabla altera tives at the stomach and digestive organs. The reason is apparent why it cures dyspep sia and indigestion, and "tho pimples nnd kln emotions which rclult therefrom and why ERrsaoarillaa that uso minerals fall. After Bnrled Treasurer G11.BOY, CaL, Dec. 11, An old Bailor, Pete Jeiikins, -wlio has been -working on Miller's Bloeinfield ranch, claims iu have been a passenger many years since, -with an old pirate, Tvho on his death bed, divulged the Eecret hiding place of a quarter-million of treasure in Spanish doubloons, the place being Wall island in the Pacific ocean, three degrees south of the equator, off the South American coast A company vras organized during the late war to look for this treasure but failed to start on account of gov ernment interference. Jennings has now succeeded in interesting capital ists from the east sojourning here, and, believing his story, they, -with hhn, yesterday started for San Francisco to make the necessary preparations for ( the discovery and recovery of the gold.
