V 03 to iJIji $wiim. ASTORIA. OREGON: TUESDAY.., -NOVEMBER 19. 1889. The revolution and republic in Brazil will cause "us all to pay more for our coffee, though it is high enough already. To-mokbow there will he some rad ical changes in freight rates from San Francisco to Chicago; the old rate of 60 cents "will he re-established. A Chaklestok paper threatens that if congress shall enact a law to regu late federal elections, the south will not continue to be a desirable home for the black man, who will then go north. To-day Washington becomes a state. Hail to No. 42! May she grow in all that makes great a common wealth, and the foundation of her prosperity be as solid and enduring as her forests and her mighty moun tains. A cable special from Kieff says the Russian government has at last suc cumbed to public opinion, and is go ing to abolish banishment to Siberia, so long a terror to humanity and a blot upon civilization. The report is, however, an unlikely one. Every indication points to a big immigration to Oregon next spring. There are a good many coming all the time, but they are only as the first low rush of the tide, to the tossing waves of a human sea that will flow from the east this way in 1890. TnE geography books in use in our common schools need changing to keep up with the processi on and portray things as they are, and not as they were ten or fifteen years ago. It isn't any more trouble for a boy or girl to learn these things right then to learn them wrong. 'Can they do it?" is the Salem Statesman's comment on the reduc tion of the tax roll of this county 30 per cent by the county board of equalization. Well, they did do it; the same as the Marion county board reduced the Marion county assess ment. 25 per cent, last year. Both parties in Masschusetts seem satisfied with the result of the trial of the Australian ballot law. The vot ing was not impeded in speed, and the method seems to be readily under stood by everybody, doubtless be cause so extensively advertised and explained in the newspapers. And so, after all the fuss, and visits, and interviews, it is very unlikely that a navy yard will be established at Port Orchard, on the Sound, or any where else on this northwest coast It is a matter of general regret but it is a good joke on those who invested in "Traycton" aud Port Orchard real estate. A man in Pennsylvania was offered 30 by a woman if he would marry her daughter. He consented, but after performing his part of the con tract, was thrashed by his mother-in-law when he tried to collect his money. Taken from various points of view, this is the worst case of mother-in-law on record. HEAL ESTATE TRANSFERS, hOY. 18TII. An Aggregate of $82,275 For the Da. Boelling, Thomson &Noland to Wm. Schmehl, Charles Peterson and George Varney, arrested for refusing to pro ceed on the vessel after signing arti cles. After being brought into the justice court the men-made a counter complaint citing that the vessel was badly leaking and was unseaworthy. P. W. Weeks, B. O.Lanfare and Louis Martin went as an examining board to suvrey the vessel and report to the court, which they did as follows. Astoria, Nov. 18, 1889. We tlie undersigned appointed to survey the forecastle of the schooner Jennie Stella, report as follews: That the only place we find a leak is around the pall bit, after throwing water on the deck under the fore-top-gallant forecastle, and that leak in our opin ion does not render her unseaworthy. P. W. Weeks, B. O.Lanfare. Louis Martin. Judge May then ordered the men to go aboard the vessel or they would be sent to jail. They went aboard. CLIPPED AND CONDENSED. The Southern Pacific will fence their railroad lines in Oregon at an expense of 168,000. The Port Townsend Merchants' bank has snld nnfc fr Moaara T.ijM Xr Tilton, of Portland. The Paget Sound & Gray's Har bor railroad has been completed to its terminus, Montesano. The East Oregonian calculates the los3 to Umatilla county by the partial failure of crops at 1,500,000. Steve Bailey, formerly of Coos bay, and lately proprietor of the Windsor hotel in Spokane, has purchased the Oilman house in Portland. On and after November 26th, trans Pacific steamers of the Canadian Pa cific will sail only once a month, in stead of fortnightly, as heretofore. Another steamer, the Farallon, has been chartered by the Oregon Devel opement company, and placed on the Yaquina and San Francisco route, taking the place of the wrecked Ya quinaBag. A "Young -Men's Investment com pany." with a capital stock of 20,000, has been incorporated at Salem. It is composed of twenty young men who propose to invest their coin in real estate instead of in faro banks, horse races, and "the girl of the pe riod." The jail at Coeur d' Alene city was destroyed by fire last Sundayj and P. J. Breen, the only inmate was burned to death. A coroner's jury brought in a verdict that he came to his death while attempting to burn his way out of jail. Breen might make a different statement if he could make any. An employe of Staver- & Walker at La Grande wore corduroy pants. A few nights since he attempted to burg larize the money drawer, getting down on his knees to work his tools. The imprint of the corduroy in the dust on the floor gave him away. The man ager accused him of tho crime, and he skipped the town to avoid arrest. A big white owl was shot near Sa lem the other day. The Statesmen says: It is of snowy whiteness and of rare beauty, the plumage being soft as velvet The wings measured four feet from tip to tip. The bird is thought to have come from Alaska. On its back and the top of its head are a few small black spots, and its feet are protected by white down. It is said in Portland that the scarc ity of apples has caused a sharp ad vance in prices. A lot was sold to ship to Sitkaat 1.25 per box, and a lot for shipment to China was sold at the same price. According to the Al bany Herald, one dealer said he sold a lot fit choice Baldwins at 1.50 per box, and Tewksbnrys, which usually sell for 40 cents per box, are now worth from 1 to 1.15. They were talking about expert bookkeeping. 'Til tell you where we needed an expert bookkeeper," said Judge Bussell, "that was tip at Eose- burg in the early days. The boys sent down word to send up a dozen barrels of whisky, marked 'coal oil,' and the shipping clerk with delight ful ingeniousness, billed the barrels 'whisky, marked coal oil.' It required an expert bookkeeper to make things harmonize." A big boom is reported at Yaquina. The Oregon Pacific proposes next summer to build a large hotel on South Beach and make the place the Saratoga of the northwest coast. A motor line is to be built from Ya quina City across the upper end of the bay to South Beach, and some ex tensive improvements made there. The Herald says: The Oregon Pa cific is buying up all the land on South Beach at 175 per acre. This is the dog-gondest town on record, says the Yale Atlas. Last Monday night some one took our rooster and one hen from the roost. As the most likely strangers in town, Judge Olmsted and John Harris were promptly accused; the judge claims to be able to prove an alibi, but would hate to, while John says he was fall ing down the corral ladder about that time. Judge Courtney, also here, is alove suspicion, of course. It is a great source of thankfulness that they overlooked Pete, the turkey, fur ther along the roost, and the pig in the annex. Charles Pratt of the Standard Oil company, when in Portland a short tune since on the occasion of the mar riage of his son to a daughter of TV. S. Ladd, looked over the property of the Willamette Palls .Electric Light company at Oregon City, and was so well pleased with the prospects of the company that after his return home he sent out and bought all the re maining stock bt the company, to the amount of 163,000. The company has a contract for lighting the city of Portland, and intends to supply power for running all kinds of machinery there. Friday, says the Statesman, in the office of the recorder of Marion county, the special liquidator of a Scottish session court filed a quitclaim deed conveying to Andrew K. Deventer, the the properties of the Oregonian Bail way company (limited). This is the narrow gauge system north and east of Salem and south of Portland. Yes terday Mr. Deventer's deed granting the same property to the Oregon Western Railway company, a corpo ration recently organized and sup posed, to represent Southern Pacific interests, was filed. The considera tion of the last transfer including bonded indebtedness is 1,270,000. On last Saturday there came to Garfield a feeble old man with but one eye and straggling gray whiskers, who gave his name as Morris Lock wood, who tells a strange story, says the Garfield, Washington Enterprise. He says that a recent issue of the Portland Oregonian contained an offer of a reward of 51,000 for infor mation concerning a man of his name, stating that therowas a sum of money awaiting him from the government He claims to be the man. Says he was occupying a homestead in Kansas, about 175 miles from Wichita; that on the 21sfe day of July, 1872, the Osage Indians made an attempt to drive him off. He and a neighbor, the only white man within miles, with their families, defended themselves all day long in a cabin that was in course of construction, with no roof, and suc ceeded in killing a number of the red skins and finally driving them off. He employed a lawyer to prosecute his claims for damages against the government, and, getting tired wait ing came west He gave his residence as near Bell's mill, on Deep creek, this country. He started for Kansas Saturday evening. The amount of damages applied for was 8800.75 for the destruction of seventy-five acres of corn and stock run off. AUNTIE PERPLEXED.
