Bismarck. N. D., Nov. 15. The point was informally raised to-day by F. M. Dudley, of the legal department of the Northern Pacific railway, in the United States land office, that the pre-emption law had beeu re pealed by the act of congress ptovid mg for the admission of the new states. It looks as if it were intended to repeal the eighth section of the act of 1811 as to the donation of 500, 000 acres of public land to the new states for public- improvements, bnt fcbertexfc includes not only the repeal of the section but of the whole law. The land department has not had its attention called to it yet, but it is cer tain that the commissioner will be called upon for an opinion, and if this opinion is adverse the question will be carrif d into the courts. The repeal referred to has also de cided a very large number of cases where the Northern Pacific company is party. If the law is repealed, all pre-emption filings where the final proof has'not been made, are defeat ed. This necessarily involves the rights of every pre-emptor who has not proved up in the four states. Have you taken a cold? You can cure it promptly with Ayer s Cherry Pectoral. The safest remedy for throat and lung troubles. Death Prcma Whale Stroke. San FrancisoOj Nov. 15. The steamer Baelaend has arrived from the Arctic. October 6, while the Bteamer was to the west of Point JBar- row, she had several boats out. One of them was in charge of second mate Dugan. A whale was sighted and a chase was given, Dagan's boat being in the lead. A harpoon was thrown and the monster was hooked. The boat was close upon him, and as he lashed out his tail one of his ilukes struck a whaler named -Oliver Quin- tell, knocking him into the water and killing mm instantly. The boat nar rowly escaped being capized. Quin- tell was a young man and a native of Australia, Ayer's Sarsaparilla. Its record of forty years is one of trinmph over blood diseases. Exchanges note the fact that hay is being shipped to The Dalles as far east as Nebraska, and it is selling for $19 per ton. It is said there will be a great scarcity of feed throughout eastern Oregon and Washington this winter, and unless the cold and storm are tempered to the trembling cattle much loss is bound to ensue. A Fieneh Canadian Xanip. -Tr ibe New York Post some time ago had a number of communications bearing upon the singular transforma tions which the names of French Canadians undergo in this country, and a number of rather extraordinary instances were given. To that list, says the -Boston Courier, may be added one related by a priest in Con necticut, in whose parish are a num ber of French Canadians. One day a man came to him to arrange for his approaching marriage, and the priest, who did not recognize him, asked his name. "My-glory-by-mght," replied the man, with every appearance of good faith. He did not speak English very flu ently, and the priest supposed that he must have misunderstood. "Your name, I said," he repeated. ""What is your name?" "My-glory-by-uight." the mau said again. "You can't have such ,a name as that," the priest said; somebody has translated it wrongly for you. "What is it in French?" "Magloire Benoit," the man an swered. It was easy to see how the extraordi nary combination with which the mau announced himself had been come at The good peoplo of Connecticut had pronounce "Benoit" phonetically, and translation had done the rest.
