Managers and "Whom it May uonccrn : This is to certify that 1 havo onuipped tlio Windsor theater in this eitv with thoLind- gren stationarj chemical firo ensines. After examining all other systems of liro protection. and alter repeated tests of tho Lindgren sta tionary chemical lire engine, and upon tho re commendation of the insuranco under-writ- ers. J havo no hesitation in pronouncing it tho cheapest and most powerful, as well cs perfect, tire protection for theaters ever in vented. In my opinion every theater ard opera house in tho United States, as well as huropo, should bo equipped with theso chem ical firo engines, and thus savo tho loss of life and thousands ol dollars in property. Respectfully. (Signed) 1I.I.GOLDY. Owner Windsor Theater, Chicago, Ills. Sec What a Practical Fireman Says. Tacoma, Wash., Sept. 1", PW0, To Whom it May Concern ; This is to certify that I, George A. Burbank, witnessed tho exhibition of tho Lindgren chemical engine test to-day, and as I have witnessed a great many such chemical tests in New York City, Boston, Mass., and other largo cities in tho East, 1 hereby stato that it was tho quickest and most satisfactory test, and was also pronounced so by two of our councilmen and all tho citizens present, and I will also stato that tho time of applying tho chemical was left entirely to mo and I did not give tho word until tho firo was well started, for in other tests I havo witnessed they havo always put the chemical on tho rainuto the fire was started and water would answer just as well, as there was nothing but tho flamo started and tho wood not charred, and 1 tako great pleasure in recommending tho "Lind gren" as far superior to any other "Chemical" engine on tho market. (Signed) GEORGE A. BURBAXK. Secretary Paid Firo Department. Director of tho Northwestern I ire Associa tion. Was last year Secretary of tho Northwest ern Fireman's Association. Talking about courage and coward ice at the club the other day, Colo nel Dudley remarked that be always bad as much sympathy with a cow ardly man as be had admiration for a brave one, for Le thought nervo was a natural attribute to man just like a taste for art. the gift of acquiriug lan guages or musical talent. One man may have a gift for music, while his next door neighbor may not be able to tell on8 note from another. So one man may be born a natural cow ard, while bis brother or bis cousin may be born without the sense of fear. "I bad a ease in my own regiment, the Nineteenth Indiana." continued the colenel: "A young fellow by t he name cf Woods, who was biigiit, well educated and came from one of the most respectable families in Indiana. He was a good camp soldier, but we were never able to get him into bat tle. The sound of explosives or the sight of blood would throw him into hysterics of fear, and when he was placed in a position of dan ger he would become uncontrol lable, temporarily insane. Final ly he deserted, went over into the rebel lines, and fi.m came back with a suit of gray "u t pectiugto be sent to some northern prison as a confed erate. But be was identified, tried by court martial, and sentenced to be shot as a destrier. Ke was shot, and, strangely enough, on the day of bis execution, for the first time in his life, be behaved like a hero. He re fused to have bis eyes bandaged, but stood up beside his coliin and looked straight into the barrels of the mus kets that were, pointed at bis heart. He made au auto mortem statement in which ho claimed his desertion was not due to lack of loyalty, but to bodily fear. He thought he could get out of the army that way, and I believe his words were true." Wash inyton Post. The Goat Found the Gold. Year; pc, when fhis part of Idaho was over run with Iudians so hostile that white men staid away, a man mounted on a large bay horse pnsred through the country, and reaching Salmon Cily told of camping one night on a creek where be saw indi cations of gold. Although nearly a hundred miles away, tho country thou was so liitlo known, and miners were so eager for" "placers." that a pros pecting party was soon on the way thither. All they knew about the place was what ' fiie unknown man with a "bay horse"' had told them, and the description was so plain that they found no difficulty in going to the spot, outside of the hard climbing over hills, through deep gorges, and the fording of the river. Once there, they named the creek and gulch Bay Horse, but found no placer gold to paj for their trouble, but there were lots of such game as deer, bear, goats and sheep. Climbing to the top of a mouutain skirting the creek, a mount ain sheep was started up, and run ning close to the precipice was pierced by a ball from tho unerring aim of a rifle ami ho fell far below. The hunter soon made his way down to the animal and was rewarded, not only by finding a prize of excellent veuison, but the sheep had struck and knocked oil' some galena ore with his horns. Tho animal had not only uncovered some of the riches of this mouutain, but bis horns nud the in cident suggested tho name for the great Kamshorn mine, which has since yielded millions in silver, gold and lead.
