Kanaga, ar rived from Springfield 111. yesterday. He is a clerk in the state auditor's de partment, of Springfield. After re maining here for a few days he Avill return home and make arrangements for permanent residence in hits state. Yesterday a man working at Trul linger's mill, had the thumb torn off of one of his hands by a hook. He was brought up town and medical aid rendered. A man yesterday at the Clatsop mill lost two fingers and thumb by their coming in contact with a saw. He was also fixed up by a doctor. Destructive forest fires in the hills west of Portland, are reported. Sev eral residences are said to have been destroyed, among them "William Beid's country place, Braeside, on the Barne3 road. A good many farmers are reported burned out of house and home. In Clarke, near "Washougal and La Camas, there has been great destruction of property. When it was telegraphed yesterday that the tournament at Tacoma was broken up. Mayor Page sent an invi tation to Mayor AVheelwright, of Ta coma, to have the contests finished here, and that Astoria would raise two or three thousand dollars to be dis tributed in prizes. But the subjuga tion of the Great rainey and the re sultant harmony made the acceptance of the invitation unuecessar'. Wednesday evening a man, whose name we .could not ascertain, while huuting ducks in a boat near Brook field, met with a very severe accident in handling his gun." He was in the act of raising it from across the seat where it was lying when the hammer struck something and discharged it. the charge going through a portion of the wrist and right hand of the man, making a verv bad wound. On the arrival of the Telephone at Brook field, the injured man was placed on board to be taken to Portland. Dr. August Kinney, whp happened to be aboard, was called on and dressed the wound and left the injured man as comfortable as possible under the cir cumstances. Great interest was felt in this city regarding yesterday's contests at Ta coma, and the unfavorable news which was received by telgraph gave rise to many wild, unauthenticated reports, some of which found their way into print and led many to believe that 'the tournament was en tirely broken up and dispersed, and that ere this the entire Astoria dele gation would be well on their way home. But reference to The Asto kian's specials this morning shows that there is a sufficient number in the fireman's association who desire fairness and justice, to down a few egotistical, self-important cranks who would, with brazen effrontery and fer menting gall, attempt to raise them selves above the power "that created them. Wanted. A competent girl to do general house work in small family. Apply at The ASTOBIA2T office. ASTORIA AND TACOJIA. Present Standing of Tlfe Two Cities. Tacoma, W. T., Sept. 17, 1889. After walking and riding around this burg for two days I have con cluded that by comparison Astoria is a level city. Asloriaiis think that we have some high hills, and that a walk to the Cath olic church, or to the cemetery is steep, but Coxcomb hillj were it over here, would be considered no height at all. The citv is built on a series of ter- j races: each street is graded so that the ground fioor of a building that runs through to the next street, is tne second story on the street below. In this way the Tacomaites get two ground floors in each building. The difference a railroad makes in the growth of n place is manifest here. AYhere I saw nothing but trails through stumps on my last visit here, is now covered with fine buildings, and laid out in streets that are crowded all day and a good part of theuightC The amount and style of building here'is noticable. Prom the Corner where Frank McMurtrie is located I saw this morning 81,000,000 worth of five and sfx story buildings in process of construction. One of the builders wanted ninety feet front on Bailroad street, but was unable to get it for 100,000, so had to make his building ninety feet shorter. The streets "are wide 75 and 100 feet across, are very rocky and dusty, and all the streets from east to west are as steep as the side of a house. The men are young, go-ahead, Americans and are building a fine city. The women here are a homely lot. It is the comment of every Astorian here, (and there are Astorians on everj- corner) that they haven't seen a good looking girl since leaving As toria. Good looking ladies are so much the rule in Astoria that their presence is taken as a matter of course. - The ladies visiting here from As toria have been the constant recipi ents of compliments from the press and public since arriving here, which shows that the Tacoma folks are at any rate capable of appreciating good looks. I have wired tournament news, and shall be able to give the results by wire long before this reaches yon, so shall say nothiug of fire matters hore beyond" this: Astoria has the finest looking and best trained team, and for reason of that,, coupled with Asto ria's record in this regard, it is impos sible to get a bet on the result, except at enormous odds. The city council, at its next session, could with great propriety, under the head of "public welfare." make an ap propriation of 1,000 to furnish trans portation here and return to about twenty Astorians, whose names will readily rise to nearly every lip, just to look around hero for awhile and see what is being done. It would do them good, and might effect a change. With teu times the advantages of this place, our seaside city is away be hind in the race for supremacy. This is humiliating, but it is an exact fact. We have all the natural advantages: Nature has been generous to Astoria; but we are dormant and our advan tages are undeveloped. Faith without works is dead." The people here have shown by their actions the measure of their faith. - On a barren, rocky bluff, overlook ing dreary tide flats, on an arm of the Sound they are building a splendid city; onr magnificent peninsula, the rightful seat and site of a great city, the spot designated by the finger of destiny as the place for the center of commerce for the Columbia basin, is still undeveloped. One Astorian, speaking to some Ta coma men about Astoria's railroad, inadvertently implied that there were people in Astoria, claiming to be de sirous of advancing their own inter ests, who, though owning property, had not a dollar in the Astoria and South Coast road. He was listened to with polite incredulity. No one in Tacoma conld believe that any one, outside of an insane asylum, could neglect or refuse so sure an opportu nity of wealth if he owned a foot of land in or around the city that such a road would so greatly benefit Tacoma is getting ready to ship wheat In its efforts to keep Astoria from forging to the front as a wheat shipping point, Portland is cnttiug its own throat. Portland long since instituted a quarrel with the 'Almighty in trying to make a seaport of an inland town 115 miles from the sea. Theylnow have a choice either to ship wheat from Tacoma or Astoria. The advantage all lies with Astoria. The business, however, is gravitating this way. This is a matter of immediate con cern to Astoria. What Portland does or does not do; what Tacoma is trying to do, should have no bearing on the fact other than to make Astoria put forth determined effort .to wrest the valuable prize from Tacoma, her real competitor. Tacqma's only advantage is this: it is a newly settled place and lias uad no time to sink into any ancient grooves or ruts: it has no ancient grudges, and if Smith sees a" chance to make 10,000 he doesn't let it go, because Brown will make $2,500 by reason of the same transaction. Each one is -working for himself, and realizes that the surest way tp "get there" is not to be a chronic kicker, or an obstructionist, but to help himself in helping others" whose p rosperity roust lielp lum. Of course all is not" harmony. These Tacoma people have their squabbles and private spats and discourage ments, just like other human beings. But they don't allow such little things to interfere with business, and when anything is up to benefit Taco ma, and the dwellers therein, you'll find men who are mad enough at each other to fight, standing in together and- helping to push something that will help the town and themselves. .It is gleefully reported here 'that the O. B. & N. Co., will on the 1st of. next month raise the price of towage from the mouth of the Columbia, and of lighterage from Portland to As toria, to double the present rates. Tacoma considers this as" water on her wheel, and the Tacomaites think that if" they had the making of laws in the Oregon legislature themselves they couldn't have more effectually cinched Astoria than that sapient body did last winter in passing theNorthrnp bill. The scenery here is fine. The city has a commanding position on a high bluff, and from evey part of it is ob tained a fine view of Mount Batacoma nier, a solitary snow crowned mon; arch, looming up to the eastward all sameMt. Hood. As in Portland, you see in every window a picture of Mt Hood in all impossible attitudes, so, here, m every window is a picture of Mt. Taranier coma. The Sound lools a good deal like our own lower river, a little wider in places, but lacking the grand charm that invests the great Columbia, as it moves in majestic silence to the sea. "The parade is forming, lets see how they look," says Fox and Megler" so, adios. J. F. H. 27 PER CENT. DIFFERENCE. Tests Showing the Strongest and Most Economical Baking Powder. Some valuable tests have been made by the government chemists as to the practical strength and usefulness of baking powders. Efforts are contin uously made to introduce inferior baking powders, the statements being published that they are as pure, or as strong as the 'Royal." Such powders are sold to consumers at the same price as the pure Boyal, but being deficient in strength, are more ex pensive in use, besides making infer ior or unwholesome food. These low class powders are frequently exposed by the public anahysts. Publications have recently been made by tike Price Baking Powder Co , the obwus purpose of which was to rid themselves of the exposure of the in feriority or low test of ihe. baking powder which they manufactured. The tests by the government chem ists and also by Prof. Chandler, of the New York Board of health, revealed the fact that Price s powder contained twenty-seven per cent, less strength than the "Boyal." When compared in money value, this difference would be as follews: One pound can Boyal Baking Pow der worth 50 cents; One pound can Price's worth 36 cents. The public are indebted to the Boyal Baking Powder Company for the fight they have been making for years past to break up the . practice of substituting alum, phosphates, lime, etc., as cheap substitutes for cream tartar, as well as short weights and low test in baking pow ders, and it is hoped, that the "stop thief" cry will not prevent that Com pany from continuing the exposure of till who are engaged in the nefarious business of palming upon the public cheap or injurious Traking powders at the same price at which a pure and wholesome article is sold. The Boyal Baking Powder has the commendation of the most noted chem ists in the country for its purity and freedom from every substance of an injurious nature. Its manufacturers will receive tho support of all con sumers for the fearlessness of their crusade against all manner of food frauds. PERSONAL MENTION. Mrs. W. The Idiot of the Northwest Mtmled Our Pire Boys' dome Home To-Morrow. All Turn Out to "Welcome them Home." Tacoma, W. T. Sept. 19. The sun hung like a copper ball over the dusty tournament track this morning. There was a big crowd. Chief Rainy came out in full, bloom and declared that he was proud of himself, the champion idiot of the northwest. He said the hook and ladder contest must be run first He must run everything: nothing could go on unless he sanctioned it: called on all to obey. Every team on the track except the Astoria team dropped on their knees and gave in : Astoria stood out. There- was a wild time, and we all reasoned, quoted law, rules, everything. It was no ge: Bainy was obdurate. He had the money in his breeches pecket: what were you going to do about it? At eleven oclock there wa3 a surg ing mob up and down Yakima avenue. The, Tacoma people cried shame. As toria simply asked them to "run the tournament by association rules." At last Bainey weakened gave up and sat down; then everything cleared ofiV Secretary Burbank officially an nounced that the judges' decision would be honored by a warrant for the money. Astoria submitted its ultimatum j RAIXEY MUST SHUT UP Or Astoria would go home. Bainey shut up. When the races were re sumed at 1135, and the association championship, say "New York race," began, Astorians who lost heavy yes terday picked up bets with Astoria against the field and placed about Sl, 500. Then TACOMA WEAKENED And would put up no more money but made wind bets. Corvallis was first on the track: time 125. East Portland, 1:20. Walla Walla, no ceupling: no time. Seattle, 1:18 3-4. Victoria, no time. Tacoma No. 2, (Bainev's pets) 126 9-10. By this time the interest was in tense and the suu boiling hot. Astoria oame next and made a great run and a finecoupling; time, 1:09 3-5. Astorians now turned loose. Vancouver, against whom Astorians had bet all their money came next, time 1:15 1-5. Then it was like old times to the Astoria delegation. It made things festive. Winning the championship race and S500 was a great record. , Next came the speed race. Every thing was now harmonous; Bainey was shut up. Victoria ran first hi 23 seconds. Seattle next, 29 1-2; NJanaimohext, 28. Then the Astoria boys still panting from the championship winning race, had to run. They tore down the track in great shape, time 27 4-5 seconds. Some Astorians made bets against the field. Tacoma made up a picked team, against all tho rules, and ran next, time, 28. Then East Portland, 28. Walla Walla next, 29. Then New West minster, 28 7-20. Then came Vancouver, Astoria's only competitors. At the end of their run the judges were figuring for a long time. At last they announced the time to be 27 3-4, beating Astoria one-twentieth of a second. Then there was great cheering and Astoria OFFERED TO BET 2,000 If the race was run over to-morrow morning when the Astoria toam were fresher, but could get NO TAKERS. Corvallis ran last, in the fast gath ering darkness: time, 28. It was so dark and smoky when the Vnucouvers had started that the judges could not see when the drop fell thus giving the Vaucouvers an advantage of abont ono second. in the race a matter of a thousand dol lars. The wet lest is not yet decided, but all probability, however, favors As toria. . Astorians got telegrams from home all day that made them feel good. They donned white satin badges on which was printed "Champion Kick ers of the World." Then white satiu badges printed: "Bescues, Champions 1882, 18S9." Astoria ladies pinned thtni on and wore them. From the time Bainey sat down everything was harmonious. Our boys feel good a little sore, but all right. There will be the hook and ladder race to-morrow, then some will re turn by way of Portland, but the most of the Astorians will go home on the Tmrline Saturday morning.
