P. O. Address, Astoria, Oregon. Grand Descriptive Powers. The Martyrs hav&ayed at home all summer, and thelrr friends, The ophilust Borer and his wife, came over Snnday evening to tell about their delightful summer trip. "Ob, you ought to have been with ua. It was grand. Up in the Adirondaoks; they were just grand. Tha grandest mountains. And the sunsets ah, they were grand. .. One .evening we saw the grandest sunset; oh, it was grand! Just grand. Oh, but the scenery grand? Perfectly grnd! Talk about, grandeur; I never saw anything so grand. The grandest mountains; grand! Grand. One afternoon a storm came up. our win dows looked right out on the storm. It was grand. The grandest sight I ever saw. Our windows Jookfid right out onth lake. JXqvl never, saw any thing so grand, i And the mountains ah, they were grand. ' Oar windows looked right out on the mountains; my, but everything was grand, "Why, " you could just sit in our windows and look right out on the mountains. Ah, they "were grand. We'd just sit there and look out; it was grand. You can't realize how grand it was unless you saw it. It was just grand. You can't begin to describe it; you can't de scribe it at all." At this; point the dying Martyrs rouse themselves to assent to this proposition with suoh unexpected and emphatic indorse ment that the Borers are encouraged to believe it is an honest encore, and they "describe" it all over again. During the summer and winter and in the springtime and along through the autumn months there is. a great deal said and written in denuncia tion of "descriptive writing," but the faofc is we don't Jiave enough of it. There is very little of it. There isn!t one descriptive letter in 800 that de scribes anything. There isn't one person in a thousand, home return ing from mountain and seashore, who can give any better description of what they have seen than your friends the Borers. Burdette.
