The audience anticipated a rare treat and in this they were not disappointed, for never within the his tory of the Grand opera house has a performance of such rare excellence been presented behind the footlights or has so gifted an actress trod its boards. Jas. Turk, who was indicted by the grand jury a few days ago, is evading the sheriff, who cannot find him. Captain Stevenson, of the ship Lord Canning, came up from Astoria last night and this morning counsel for Balfour, Guthrie & Co., consignees of the Lord Canning, appeared before Judge Stearns and asked that the case against Turk be triedefore the 20th, as the ship has her cargo and that date is the time fixed for sailing, which she cannot do without her mas ter Stevenson and the first mate, who are under bonds to appear as wit nesses affainst James Turk. The wit nesses manifest no desire to evade tes tifying against the defendant, but they allege that in the event that they are precluded from sailing on the 20th, the postponement might be the means of incurring considerable loss to the owners of the vessel, if District attorney McGinn will not al low the vessel to depart within a rea sonable time, unless Turk is apprehended-before the 20th instant. The district attorney wishes to enforce the law. PERSONAL. Samuel Elmore and wife and C. W. Fulton return to Astoria to-night. SLIPPERY JOE. Joe Holladay came up from Astoria last night iu charge of the officers. During the trip Holladay did not sleep a wink, and upon the arrival of the steamer here he asked the officers for permission to go to his own house to get some rest, saying, ''It is pretty hard on a man seventy years of age to be deprived of his sleep. You need have no uneasiness about me for Til surely be in court at half past nine." Lounsbnry and Joe Knott accom panied Holladay to his home. Kuott kept his eye on the front door till Lounsbury returned for his man a few miuute3 before the session of Judge hStearns' court. They found the house deserted by Holladay -after making a thorough search for him upon the premises. The theory is that he must have scaled the high fence in the rear of his house, and so escaped.
