At the tejm of Court just closed at "Oysterville, Judge Allyn had a case before him that, so tar as we are able to say, involved a very unusual point. Briefly related, the attendant cir cumstances were these: The railroad company in Pacific county had trouble with Judge Bris coe in getting a righl of way through his land. A gentleman named An drew Olsen, wrote a communication to the Pacific Journal, setting forth the pro bono publico side of the mat ter, favoring the railroad, and oppos ing Judge Briscoe1s objections. Sometime after the railroad direc tors called upon Mr. Olsen for his railroad subscription. He put in a bill for 500 for the article which the Journal had published. Payment being denied, he brought suit, and the ease was tried this week at Oyster ville. The point at issue is an interesting one. Can a man, without a -previous agreement, specifically stated, collect money for a communication to a news paper, the proprietor of the news paper admitting of its publication as a matter of public interest, without pecuniary benefit to himself, and giv ing the discussion the gratuitous use of his columns? Very properly, as it seems to us, the judge decided against Olsen, instruct ing the jury to bring in a verdict for the defendant. To do otherwise would be to seri ously cloud the presumed motive and intention of all contributors to the public press and set an injurious pre cedent. Judge AUyn is to be commended on the soundness and clearness of his views regarding the matter. CoMPTHOXiiirR of the currency Lacey comes from Charlotte, a town in the western part of lower Michi gan, which district he has served in congress for half-a-dozen years. Mr. Lacy is a rich lumberman, a man of cultivation and a good speaker, and he is also clever with his pen. He is very painstaking and precise, but simple in his manners and methodical in his habits. Notwithstanding his whitening hair and mustache, Mr. Lacey looks a young man. and is one so far as energy and enthusiasm go. The salary attached to the important office of comptroller of the currency is 6,000 a yearless by 4,000 than W. H. Yanderbilt pays his head cook. A young lady of the name of Min nie Walsh some years ago was prominent as prima donna in rural "Church Choir companies" during the run of the Gilbert and Sullivan operas. She married a Dr. Ashton of Pawtucket, R. L Trouble ensued and the doctor charges her with assaulting him at various times with an order slate, a cream jug, an umbrella, a cocoa-nut dipper, a glass tumbler, medical books and a basket of eggs; also a fork, a skewer and a china tea-cup; likewise a coal hod and a heavy hatchet To these lively proceedings the unlucky spouse, after much forbearance, finally de murred and at last seeks a divorce. There is sound wisdom in these words of Ignatius Donnelly to the Wisconsin newspaper men: "Never write a syllable that tends to make virtue ridiculous or religion coutemp tible. Dogmas may perish, but the essential soul of goodness in the hearts of creeds will live on amid all the mutations of mankind, unless stamped out by the feet of vice or folly. Nev er write a word that tends to make mankind morbid or degraded." Mr. Balfour was dining in Dublin not long ago, at the same table with the genial Father Healy. The chief secretary asked the priest: "Do the Irish really hate me as much as the newspapers say?" "My dear sir," re plied the reverend gentleman, if the Irish hated the devil only half as much as they hate you, my occupation would be gone." The Newfoundland government is enforcing the Bait law with a good deal of vigor. The crusier Lady Olover has made eight seizures this season. The masters of two vessels were sentenced to pay a fine of 1,600 each or undergo five months impris onment. Others were imprisoned for terms of from five months downward. David Dudley Field, in an inter view at Rochester, New York, said his brother, Judge Field, did not regard Terry's assault as personal, but as an insult to every citizen of the United States. He did not think anything serious would be done to Neagle, who acted within the law. Meals Coohctl to Order. Private rooms for ladies aud families: at Central Restaurant, next to Foard & Stokes'. The Lebanon (New Hampshire) Free Press says there is something more than suggestive almost startling in the announcement that the single town of Littleton, in that state, with a home taxable valuation of less than a million and a half dollars, had million dollars invested in the deso lated city of Spokane Falls. The people on the Pacific coast little ap preciate the truth of the old maxim, that a penny saved is a penny earned, which the New England people have applied for many years iu their busi ness and habits of living. New York, Aug. 27. Albert Dag gett, who has just secured the postal card contract for the next four years, is apparently going to perform the job out of pure benevolence. The govern ment has called for 4,000,000 cards per year and according to Mr. Daggett's figures he can receive but $159,000 for them, making 036,000 in four years as gross receipts. If Mr. Dag gett shall buy his paper from a mill the paper in the roll for -100,000,000 cards will cost him at least S171,115 per year leaving him short on paper alone $12,125 per year, or $18,500 for the term of his contract This takes no account of printing, cutting, counting, banding and delivering the cards, which will be at least $50,000 more. As there is no opportunity to, cheat on the qual ity of the paper in the cards, and as the postmaster general has large dis cretion, the question is asked by part ies familiar with Daggett's schein ings, how it is possible for him to carry out the contract A Safe Investment.
