Last Moinlay morning James Steel, administrator of the estate of the late Ben Holladay, sold at public auction in front of the courthouse a $300,000 claim due the estate from the government for Indian depreda tions committed on Holladay's over laud stage route during the war of the rebellion. There wa3 some spirited bidding, and finally the claim was knocked down to general P.ufus Ingalls for 750, as the executor of the estate of the late Mrs. Esther Holladay. The original claim Ben Holladay presented to the government for pay ment amounted to S600,000, and president Lincoln at that time prom ised to see that it should be paid; but before be could personally inter est himself in the matter the assas sin's bullet ended his glorious life. Subseouentlv the United States sen ate reduced the claim to 300,000, but its passage never came to a vote. At one time the government offered Ben Holladay S100,000 for his demand, but he refused to accept the com promise. Last winter senator Stewart, of Nevada, during a visit to this city told Mrs. Esther Holladay that if she would present the claim as her own, exclusive of all other alleged iuterested persons, the senate would report au S100.000 bill in her favor, but in the meantime she died. Tbere is no question, however, as to the disposition of the United States sen ete in this respect, and very likely an act will be passed at the next session of congress allowing the amount sen ator Stewart promised Mrs. Holla day, to her children, Ben and Lindr. A New Log-Outting Machine, I havo it "straight" that before many months there will be a new log-cutting maohine iu this oity, whioh will astonish oven the most inorednlons. A machine to weigh no less than 40 tons, by means of which an unsteamed log can be shaved up at the rate of 20 boards a minute, 12 feet long and 36 inches in width. Thickness will be from one inch down to tho thinness of paper. By this machine the entire log can be utilized no Baw kerf, no planing, as the boards come away perfectly smooth. This is destined to revolu tionize the bos trade, as it would be folly to try to compete with a board maker that can cut faster than the most rapid saw and that utilizes every particle of the log. The timo is now at hand for such a machine, as the annual waste in saw dust is simplj' enormous in this coun try. It ia said that 65 per cent, of all tho lumber cut is one inch and under. This being true, the field for the perfect knife maohine will bo a broad one. Should the machine prove a failure it will not bo for long, as such a cutter must come, and that shortly. Up to the present time three-eighths to one-half inch is about as thick as any knife machine has successfully cut, and that only from short logs. It is rumored that a Chi cago syndicate offered a most fabu lous price for the controlling interest in this cutting wonder- New York letter in the Southern Lumberman. General Lumber Notes. Numerous and valuable rafta of logs wore lost in the Kanawha river during tho recent Pennsylvania floods. Nye, Lusk & Hudson have been) oongea io sum meir exiuumve nuns at Thorpe, Edmore and Stanley, Wis., because of tho scarcity of logs. The average daily cut of the O. C.
