THE ELIXIR OF LIFE. Dr. Browx-Seqtjabd's late inven tion of a sort of 'Elixir of Life," is naturally exciting a good deal of at tention. Dr. Brown-Sequard is a man of very wide and diversified ex perience. A Canadian by birth, lie Las practiced in tliis country, in Lon don and in France, and everywhere has made himself remarkable by his boldness and originality. A full ac count of his latest experiments has been published and Dr. W. A. Ham mond, so well known as an authority on nervous diseases, is engaged in ex perimenting with his formula, with a slight alteration in the source from which he obtains his elixir. He tried his first experiment on a man of sixty, a martyr to rheumatism, who, on the day following the treatment, could button his shirt collar and stroke his back hair, two things which he had not done for years. An elixir that would prevent one's collar but ton running about the floor and hid ing in remote recesses, inaccessible to man, is the next boon that suffering humanity demands. Dr. Permay, at Indianapolis, has ministered to a gen tleman in the Hoosier state with the result that he got up early on Monday morning and exclaimed. "I feel like working." This was evidently an al most forgotten sensation, and it is to be hoped this good effect will be perma ment "We fear, however, that the dose of lambs' flesh was too strong, for he added, "I feel kindo' funny, like I did twenty-five years ago." To make a man of fifty feel "funny, like as if he were twenty-five," is a triumph of art and science. Some Philadelphia medicos say Brown-Sequard is in his dotage, and that Hammond is a quack. This is vituperation, not argument. Experi ments continued for a long time should be instituted before any one can give a verdict. Dr. Hammond confesses he has not much faith, but he has the courage to prosecute ex periments with a view to ascertain ing the truth. The world may be on the verge of a great discover', and the century that has annihilated space by electricity may annihilate time, or, at least, check its ravages by a hypo dermic syringe. A century ago men were ridiculing Jenner and his system of vaccination; to-day the world does not ridicule Pasteur and his system of inoculation for rabies; and Brown Sequard deserves patient hearing. The "Elixir of Life" and "The Foun tain of Kejuvenescence" have always been dreams of mankind. De Soto perished in quest of one, and many an old alchemist lost his life by the fumes of his own alembic while search ing for the other. All the possi bilities of hypodermic injections are by no means exhausted. The first American to experiment hypodermi cally is the rattlesnake. His poison can be swallowed and does not affect the skin; it is only deadly when in jected under the skin by his fangs. Hence, we may argue that the fact of the ingredients used by Dr. Ham mond being common articles of food, that produce no effect when eaten, is no argument for their inefficency when injected. In fatal poisoning by snake bite the blood everywhere co agulates with increasing damage to the nerve centers, that keep us alive by energizing the muscles that move the chest walls. The respirations be come weaker and weaker, the chest becomes motionless,, and the hind legs paralyzed. Injections of per manganate of potash will destroy the venom's power to kill. The symp toms of death by venom are not un likethose of other diseases. Are we to have an antidote to old age? To be immortal would be the greatest curse. Dante makes the most wretched of souls those that non Jianno speranza di morte; but an alleviation of some of the horrors of age is a boon to be prayed for. The marvelous growth of our iron and steel-making industry under the protective tariff, is well illustrated by tha statement that the consumption of both has increased 128 per cent, since 1879, and that in spite of a marked decrease in the amount of railway construction. A British subsidy of 60,000 has been voted for the establishment of mail service between Vancouver and Hongkong. The Canadians hope to divert to Vancouver the mail route to Australia from the Pacific The Paris Tailor Has just received the most elegant Stock of Spring and Summer Suitings. New man was arrested to-day for threaten ing to kill her neighbor Mrs. Olga Steinkle. Joe Holladay and Senator Mitchell had a wordy war to-day, while the former was undergoing examination before the referee, C. "W. Idleman. to show cause why he refuses to allow certain personal claims of General Kufus Ingalls, administrator of the late Esther Holladay estate. The recent arrest, and conviction of Levi F. Foss attache of the Miss issippi Medicine" company, at No. 226 First street, for a larceny of 19 from a customer, named S. Rosenthal, has had the effect of drawing the atten tion of the public to the manner in which the business is conducted in that 'establishment, ostensibly owned by Walter iieyes. District attorney McGinn has filed information against Wal ter Keyes and Levi F. Foss in justice Tuttle's court charging them with conducting a lottery scheme for the purpose of disposing of personal property. Warrants for the arrest of. th.; ac cused were issued. Dave Campbell writes from San Francisco to a friend in this city that Jack Dempsey who is to meet George La Blanch, the marine at the Cali fornia Athletic club next Tuesday night is in fine condition. He feels confident of getting away with the fight The general impression in this city is that Dempsey will easily hang the marines scalp to his belt, although but little betting is being done here. cause op ti. m T"Tht ftra you groTrtlng at, sir!". ."At tha amount you ara eatliuj, alrl Hv joti no xegtrd for tho feelings of a dyipeptic, rtrT" "No rdr!
