to gmlj gurtotfm ASTORIA. OREGON: SATURDAY ...-AUGUST 24. 18S9. Fbom every newspaper in Oregon come words of commendation and encourage ment for the Astoria railroad project Some cynic has said that "Gratitude is a lively sense of favors to come." It does look a little that way, sometimes. If the Pilgrim Fathers about whom so much has been said and sung, were to have deferred their landing at Plymouth Bock till this afternoon, they'd have been sent back as contract emigrants. The chess and checker club over at Olympia, otherwise called the constitu tional convention, have adjourned. The Washington people will now ratify or reject the result of their 43 days of men tal incubation. A distinguished party of gentlemen arrive this morning to see the seaport of Oregon. Mr. Adams, Mr. Holoomb and M. CanGeld have bean here before. It is now five years since Mr. Adams , in company with Hon. John Sherman, ad dressed a large assembly of Astorians. The statements they made then are in process of fulfilment. So far The Astobian has not heard from our zealous governor relative to the flagrant breach of the law exhibited to him. Can it be that the honorable Sylvester looketh for motes rather than beams; or that he is of that equally sing ular tribe who strain at gnats and swal low camels! But let us not judge the governor too hasty. Mayhap he is plan ning condign punishment on those who have violated the statutes of Oregon by publishing illegal lottery advertisements. Brace up governer: the eyes of the web foot commonwealth are upon you. Edmund G. Boss was a lieutenant in the army of the Union. Upon the death of Jim Lane by suicide Lieutenant Boss was appointed United States senator from Kansas. He stood by Andrew John son in the impeachment proceedings and was kicked out of the Bepublican party. At the expiration of his brief term in the senate he returned to Lawrence, Kan., where he conducted a Democratic daily newspaper. When Cleveland was elected president Boss was made governor of New Mexico. Harrison's election caused his removal, and the ex-senator and ex- governor, who was always improvident, returned to the case and is now stioking type in the Xew Mexican office at Santa Fe as a journeyman printer. Boss is in luck in having a good trade to fall back on. One of the devices, says the S. F. Bul letin, whioh the old communities of the east have for a long time employed to obtain the power which is pass ing away from them by the westward movement of population, is to increase the ratio of population for representa tives in congress. On the face it seems to be fair all around. But it does not work that way. So long as the old states had a majority in congress, there was nothing for the west to do but to grin and bear it. Bat the latter now has the power and it will probably use it to protect itself. The last ratio for a representative in congress is a papula tion of 151,512. It has been advanced to these figures at one bound, from the ratio of 1870 which was 130,533. It is not wise to advance the ratio be yond what it is now. The ratio implies at least 30,030 voters. If it is main tained California, for instanco, will get eight members of congress (perhaps nine), Oregon will get two, and so on, while New York, New Jersey and a few of the New England states will lose, as they ought. Adherence to the present ratio will of course increase the numbers of the house. Bat better that than any larger number of voters should take the place of the 30,000 to whom a single representative is now allotted. A SERIOUS BLUNDER. A tady Nearly Proitrted by a Pat ent Medicine. A lady well-known In the Western Addition has been a great sufferer for years with in digestion and dyspepsia. Struck with tho testimonial praising Joy's Vegetablo SarsR parilla, she- cent for a bottle. The druggist, not having It, talked them Into taklnganother sarstparilla. As tho leading sarsapariilas use mineral blood purifiers, tho effect of the emptying of, iodide of potash into a stomach already distressingly delicate was disastrous, almost prostrating her before the mistake wai rectified. She then called upon Mrs. Fowler, of S27 Ellis street, whose name was among those cured by Joy's Vegetablo Sarsaparilla. Mrs. Fowler said it was truo that it had cured her. Again reassured, the vegetable com pound was lent for and gotten. Tho gentle action of its vegetablo Btimulants upon tho liver, kidneys and digestive organs, and IU warm Btomach tonics, wero the very things seeded, and she began improving and was her old self within a fortnight This sounds like Action, but tho names can be given If necessary. San Francisco Examiner. The steamer J. B. Libby, owned by Herbert F. Beecher, of Port Townsend, has ben libeled by the foundry com pany of that city for JfoOO. A Sotiurt rcgal Opinion. E.-rfalnbridee Munday Esq., County Atty.. Clav Co., Texas says: Have used Electric Bitters with most happy re sults. My brother also was very low with Malarial Fever and Jaundice, but was cured My timely use of this medi cine. Am satisfied Electric Bitters saved his life.' Mr. D. I. Wilcoxson, of Horse Cave, Ky., adds a like testimony, saying: He postively believes he would have died had it not been for Electric Bitters. This great remedy will ward off, as well as cure all Malaria Diseases, and for all Kidnej', Liver and Stomach Dis orders stands unequaled. Price 50 cents and 81, at Jno C. Dement's. TELEMHIC. Williag to Answer to the Name of Snasys. "Ha! Caught you at last, have I?" The tall powerful man who uttered these words stood in the center of a group at a street corner in a far western town. As he spoke he brought his hand down heavily on the shoulder of a mild looking stranger who was passing by, and turned him half way round. The tall powerful man had previously winked at the bystanders. "xouaont remember me, i suppose.'" he continued, with a fierce frown, as he tightened his clutch on the stranger's shoulders. "Why, ne: I can't say that I do." re plied tho mild looking man, looking at mm wonaenngiy. 'iou've forgot all about the time vou leaned out of a car window of a train just pullin' out of Cheyenne and knocked my bat on, l reckon"' "I certainly don't remember anvthinc of the kind,'' protested the bewildered stranger. "I never saw you before." "U, yes you dial You may have for got it, but I haven't." And he em phasized the assertion by a vigorous shake. "I haven't forgotten it. and I've said a thousand times since then that if ever I met you again I'd make you ap- poiogize or ncut. "Now that I think of it." said the mild-looking stranger, stooping to pick up his hat which had fallen to the ground during the shaking process , "It seems to me I do remember something of the kind. I suppose I am bound to give you satiafaction-for it. Put up your dukes!" His bewilderod look had all cone by this time. Placing himself in attitude of defense ho danced around the bier man in a way that was startlingly sugges tive or previous practice. "Before I mop the sidewalk with you," said the other. "I want to be sure I ain't mistaken. Your name is is Snaggs, ain't it?" "Snaggs!" replied the strancer. plant ing a blow neatly on his antagonist's ijiw. "onrt.jmilv! Snnrrou rvi An a Troll as anything else. Snagcs it is." "But hold on! I want to be dead sure! lhe man I'm lookm' fur is Jerusalem onaggs." "You've found him, my friend," ex claimed the stranger, as he banged him on the nose. "I'm Jerusalem Snancs!" he continued, making a feint with his left and administering a vicious unner cut with his right. "0, yes, Fm Snaggs biff from whack Snaggsville, Snaggs county bang near the headwaters of bnaggs' creek! unice hours from 1 to 21. Come early and avoid tho rush!" "With a final blow under the ear he laid the burly fellow flat on the ground. "My name gentleman, is Jerusalem Snaggs, of course, but for convenince sake I go around under an alias." And he took from his vest pocket a card and threw it on the prostrate body of the big man. After he had gone away somebody picked it np and read: "J. Dempsy, Professor of Scientific Boxing. Special attention devoted to training pugilists." The confidence of people who have tried Hood's Sarsaparilla, in this prepa ration, is remarkable. It has cured many who have failed to derive any good whatever from other articles. For diseases caused by impure blood or low state of the system it is unsurpassed.
