il ftc a&$ gfomu. ASTORIA. OREGON: SATURDAY AUGUST 10. 1889. IX BEHRING SEA. A WKLii-rosTED department official says, in reference to tho Bearing sea contro versy : "There is nothing for the govern ment to do in conection with the Bea ring sea matter bnt to continue to en force the law, capturing as many pirat ical sealers as they find within our jur isdiction. Tho bluster in Canada does not even excite interest in the state or treasury departments. When the British government communicates with us on the subject officially it will be time enough for the state department to take the matter up. There is not the least probability of war, but if there were, it wonld place England in a very awkward, not to say dangerous position. The policy being carried out with regard to these seal fisheries was adopted only after a careful inqui' into the matter. The house committee on merchant marine and fisheries, last season made a thorough investigation of tho question, the result of which was seen in tho act reaffirming our rights over these waters. 'Before President Harrison issued his proclamation of April, this act and every thing pertaining to tho legal aspect of the question was referred to the attorney general, and there is perfect agreement between the state and treasury depart ments and the department of justice." "Congressman Farquhar, who was a member of tho committee in tho house that formulated the bill, says this coun try would go right on asserting and maintaining its jurisdiction over the Beh ring sea fisheries, and England can't say a word in earnest about the matter. Russia stands ready to make good our title derived by purchase from her. Great Britain cannot afford to antagon ize two great nations like Russia and tho United States. There is no doubt about Russia's disposition in tho matter. She guaranteed us a title, and England cannot seriously question that title with out antagonizing Russia. If she went in to fight she would have two antagonists. This is all welS understood in England, us well as in Russia and America. A new scheme to induce warm-hearted persons to open their pocket-books has been exposed in Atlanta, Ga. The scheme was worked by a man and his wife. Tho latter went from house to house asking for nione' with which to bury her husband. Sho received several contributions, but one lady, doubting her story, said: "I'll go to your home with you." She did so, and to her great surprise found the husband laid out on a table with a white sheet thrown over him. She was much moved by tho sight, and, pulling out her purse gave the "widow" sever? 1 dollars in small change. After leaving the house tho lady discovered that she had forgot ten her handkerchiof, and returned to get it. Upon re-entering tho room she was shocked to seo tho "dead man" sit ting up counting tho money. A new work on evolution denies that man was evolved from the monkey, but on the contrary asserts that man and monkey both came from tho same parent stem. They represent the two stages of development, one upward and tho other downward, of tho human species. Ho figures out that the prehistoric being who was the father of tho human race, as well as of tho monkey tribe, was a Chinaman. If tho best that science can do is to force us to a choice between a monkey and a Chinaman for an ances tor, tho world will prefer to stick to tho old orthodox doctrine of man's origin. And, after all, it isn't so much a question with us as to whence wo camo as it is to know whither we're going. Gov. Medebo, of tho state of Chihua hua, Mex., is passing through the United States with his family en route to the Paris exposition. The governor's fam ily consists of a wife and 18 children, be sides three maid-servants and one man-servant. His railroad and steamship faro for the round trip will cost him 8,000, the special sleepers alono costing 1,400. If he runs that family successfully and the state of Chi huahua on tho side he is tho greatest governor now on earth. Albeadx hundreds of boomers aro en camped on the edge of the Sioux reserva tion, waiting for the word to cross tho lino and stake claims. Telegrams from all parts of tho country announce that reinforcements aro coming. Tho rush will be greater than that to Oklahoma, as the reservation is tho garden spot of tho west. Tho requisite number of sig natures of Indians has been secured by tho commissioners to sell the 11,000,000 acres of land to the government. Tnisis the latest in the way of prehis toric find in Nebraska: Tho petrified arm of a prehistoric giant was unearthed recently on the farm of J. R. Male, near Kearney, Neb. Tho hand was tightly clasped. A young son of Mr. Male, while playing with the curiosity, broke off the fingers of the hand and nine large dia monds fell out. Mr. Male will exhume the remainder of tho giant's body. An old church in Cahokia, III., that was built in 1G81 of cedar logs, was torn down a few days ago to make way for a more modern building. There wero only two churches in America at St. Augustine and Santa Fe that wero older. An odd scene occurred tho other day in two hay-fields not an eighth of a mile apart at Lancaster, Penn. In one, all work was stopped for the day by a pour ing rain, while in tho other not a drop fell all day. The record of cures accomplished by Hood's Sarsaparilla ran never be com pletely written. Tho moonlight excursion to Knappa on Thursday evening planned and executed by the young ladies of the Y. AV. C. T. U. proved to be a very enjoyable affair, and a pecuniary success. About two hundred ladies and gentlemen took possession of tho spacious saloon of the steamer S. G. Reed which had been chartered for tho occasion, and promptly at half past seven o'clock she cast off her lines; making a quick run of about 40 minutes, to tho Knappa landing. On their arrival the visitors were welcomed by Mr. and Mrs. Knapp. On repairing to the hall they found it handsomely decorated, and through the kindness of Mrs. Knapp everything ready for the advent of the famous and renowned Peak Sisters. About fifty of the citizens of Knappa and vicinity had already taken their seats and when the two hundred Asto rians were added to these standing room waa at a premium. After short introductory literary and musical performances, the Peake Sisters appeared upon, the stage in their varied grotesqae costumes, each carrying in one hand a band-box and in the other a mu sical instrument of some kind, bnt no two alike. The programme was so clev erly arranged that each of the ten Sisters had a special solo part to perform. Each one performed her part so well as to be deserving of special men tion but space will not permit. Enough to say that the audience manifested their appreciation of the performance by roars of laughter and rounds of applause. A most enjoyable time was had during the passage home, tho members of the society sparing no pains to make every body happy. The disappointment ex perienced by not being able to secure' a band was overcome by tho presence of so many competent performers on tho various and numerous musical instru ments carried along. When tho Reed reached her dock at half past twelve the excursionists stepped ashore, unanimous in the opin ion that full value had been received for the time and money spent. "We aro informed that the young la dies intend to repeat the performance in this city at Rescue hall on Thursday evening, the 12th inst, for the benefit o'f tho Rescue club. HE TOOK THE WRONG MEDICINE. Robert Stewart, ol rctaluma, recently had a queer experience. Ho writes: "Carbuncle and boils afflicted my face and neck for weeks. Finally I procured a bottle of one of tho leading Barsaparillas. To my Burpriso it made matters worse. Thismado mo loso faith in Barsaparillas, but seeing a statement that Joy's Vegetable Sarsaparilla dried up boils and face eruptions instead of forcing moro out as tho potash sarsaparilla3 do, I bought a bottle. TIio effect was aston ishing. Tho carbuncles and boils began to dry up, and in two weeks my face wa s well and Bmooth'asever. Mybrotberalsotookabottlo nith tho samo benefit Robert Stewart, "Petaluma, Cah" Explanatory Note Tho mineral iodldo of potash, which is the basis ol nearly all other Barsaparillas, attacks tho blood direct, henco forces impurities through tho skin, creating more boils and pimples. Joy's Vegetable Sar saparilla acts oppositely. Its vegetable alter atives stimulate the various secretive organs and thus eliminate all impurities through tho natural channels., henco dries ir pimples and skin eruptions at once.
