Leading phy sicians recommend these pills for Stomach, and Liver Troubles, Costive ness, Biliousness, and Sick Headache ; also, for Rheumatism, Jaundice, and Neuralgia. They are sugar-coated ; con tain no calomel ; are prompt, but mild, in operation ; and, therefore, the very best medicine for Family Use, as well as for Travelers and Tourists. "I have derived great relief from Ayer's Pills. Five years ago I was taken so ill with Rheumatism that I was unable to do any work. I took three boxes of Ayer's Pills and was entirely cured. Since that time I am never without a "box of these pills." Peter Christensen, Sherwood, "Wis. "Averts Pills have been In use in my family upwards of twenty years and have completely verifled all that is claimed for them. In attacks of piles, from which I suffered many years, they afford greater relief than any other medicine I ever tried." T. F.Adams, Holly Springs, Texas. To the Editor of Enyineei iug New : In a recent number of the Chiengi Railway Revicio, a correapoi dent, u thfi rnnree of ait article n "Wl,1 I V3, Trou Bridges," sajs: "As to the dnrubility of wood, the snpenntend entoftlie Canadian Pacific railway says, in a paper on the sulj-et that the Northwestern fir will last forty years and be perfect Ij safe." I am a manufacturer f timber at present, and built that portion of the Northern Pacific railway between Portland and Pnget sound. On this 150 miles of road there is a very large proportion of trestle and Howe truss bridges. The first part of this road was built in 1871. Within three years afterwards I fonud a szreat many of the timbers in the Howe truss bridges had decayed, and on ex amination found they were red fir. I have sinco noticed that the red fir stick in a bridge will not last more than one-third as long as the yellow fir. A great many eastern toads are getting from Oregon and Washingtoc territory ties and bridge timbers, and they indiscriminately buy both red and yellow fir; in fact they make no distinction between these two kinds of timber. In a short time there will bo com plaints that our fir timber on the Pa cific coast is worthless, because of their failing to buy the yellow in stead of the red fir. The latter will last, as cross ties, at least eight or nine years, or as great n length of time as the best white oak; whereas the former will not last more than one-third that time. I suggest to the railway companies, m buying timber here, that they be careful to havo an expert examine this timber aud buy only yellow fir. As their habit is now, when they can make a purchase for 32 or S3 a thou sand less, they aro loaded up with tho inferior article in a very large proportion. In this connection I wish to sub mit the experience of Captain J. W. White, of the United States revenue marine service. He has superiutonded tho building of all the revenue cut ters (hat have been constructed on the Pacific coast, nud he informs me that he never, in a single instance, put a piece of red fir in I he const Mic tion 'if one of the government ve. sels. The following is his letter written to me from Oakland, Cal., under the date of February 2, 1S89: "The revenue steamer Woh-otl was built at this port in 1873, under my supervision, of material obtained at the several lumber ards, but not cut expressly for ship building purposes, nor can I nfow Say whether it came from Oregon or-Washington territory. It was, however, chiefly, if not en tirely, of yellow fir that had been then deemed by far the most durable. This vessel was carefully examined and repaired in 1884 under my super vision, the only decayed parts being in the frame of the top sides along the boiler and engines span, and about the topgallant forcastle where water had been admitted, with no chance to dry out and no ventilation. She has been in commission since 1873, save, the few months required to make the above named repairs, and I have no doubt but that she is perfectly' sound at this time." The revenue steamer Corioin was built at Portland, Or., in 187G, under my supervision, entirely of yellow fir. She has been in service since that time erasing from San Diego to the Arctic ocean, w'as carefully examined but a few months since by a board, Captain Hooper, an expert shipbuild er, and myself. The only decayed timber found waa in one timber for ward and above the main deck line, and under side of plank on spar or quarter deck, both being from leak age and no chance to dry." "The revenue steamer Rash, was built at Port Blakeley, Washington territory, in 1885, under my supervi sion, also of yellow fir." "Both the Uorwin aud RusJi whn built, if in the merchant service, would have been rated 3-3, which is the highest class for thirteen years. The Corwin having reached that age, from the inspection above referred to. her condition entitles her to the same rate for five years more without further inspection, and I feel assured the Rusli will prove quite as sound when she has reached a similar age. Time has shown that the Wolcott would also have borne a first class rating; though, as above stated, the material of which she was constructed was not cut especially for ship bnild ing purposes." "For fence posts or railroad ties, select tho butts of large yellow fir trees, say from sixteen feet and up; let the sap be well dried not before placing them in position. I will ven ture to' say that a largo majority of them will be sound at the expiration of fifteen years, while the life of the red fir will not he over three years. No disinterested person can say less for the one and more for the other knowingly.'' "In conclusion, I wish to say that the strength of the yellow fir as a bridge timber is not excelled even by the oak of the eastern states. That has been demonstrated by the experi ment made " at the Mare Island navy yard in California. For railway ties it is fnlly as valuable as oak, and will hold a spike much longer." . It is well un derstood that England is as much interested as the United States in preventing poachers fro-u indiscriminately slaughtering the valuable animals, and while Rus sian interests in tho northwestern waters are not to bo compared with those of either of tho other govern meats, sho will be ready and williug to join with both for the purpose.
