The en tire business portion of the city, cov ering nearly forty blocks, was de stroyed by fire to-night. Fire broke out at 6 p. 3i., in a frame block near the depot. The water pressure was very weak, and the flames spread rap idly, sweeping the entire block iu less than half an hour. A high wind sprang up scon after the fire started, filling the air with burning embers, and starting fires in several adjacent blocks. The Pacific hotel was the first valuable building to Buccumb. Ad joiping it was the Buss house, a large frame hotel, which burned like tinder. The fire communicated to the Northern Pacific passenger aud freight depots, burning them to the ground. Ths Northern Pacific rail road'e loss is variously estimated. The loss, including the freight in the warehouse, is estimated at about 1,000,000. The wind increased in violence, and shifted in all directions, creating a whirlwind of flamer. It wra then evident that the city was doomed, and the people became pauic-strickeu. The firemen lost all control over the mad demon. The mayor ordered buildings to be blown up with giant powder. About a dozen large buildings ami other small ones were blown up. Every business housa in the city, including eight banks, all the hotels but one, all the magnificent struc tures except the .Crescent block, and every newspaper in the city except the Revieiu ia burned out. Tho burned district includes all that part of the city from the North ern Pacific railway to the river, and from Lincoln to Washington streets, embracing over thirty blocks. The fire exhausted itself at the river for lack of material to burn. All the flour and lumber mills were saved. T It is impossible to estimate the loss at this hour, but it will run far into the millions. Charles DaviH, sleeping in the Ar lington, was awakened by the flumes bursting through the window. He leaped from n thirtl-Btory window and was shockingly luimuled aud terribly burned, and ia now repotted dead. A woman leaped from the secoud story window of the PaciOc hotel, and" is believed to be fatally iujnred. A man jumped from the second story of'Opera house block, aud sev eral bones were broken. An unknown man was shot by ex ploding cartridges, and is supposed to be dead. All the provisions and supplies in this city were burned, and neces sarily there will be much suffering for a few days, until supplies are shipped in. "While it is o terrible blow to thou sands of people, the city will be re- bnilt as speedily as men and money can do it. A Double Influence. DR. Catarrh Cured, A clergyman, after years of suffer ing from that loathsome disease, Ca tarrh, and vainly trying every known remedy, at laBt found a recipe which completely cured and saved him from death. Any sufferer from this dread ful disease sending a self addressed stamped envelope to Prof. J. A. Law rence, 88 Warren St., New York City, will receive the reoipe free of charge. Dement. The XT- S. Pish Commissioner. Col. Marshall McDonald.the United States fish commissioner, is in Port laud to-day. His visit to this coast is for the purpose of making arrange ments for the development and ex tension of fish culture. His inten tion i3 to place the salmon fisheries of the coast under the same condition as the shad fisheries of the east; that is to reslore and keep 'he sup ply np to its original standard, by means of artificial propagation. hen asked by au Oreyomun repoiter if this would be practicable in tue Coinmbia river, Colonel McDonald said: "I thiuk it can be done, but I cou uot say for certain. This year the pack in the Columbia is only about a thirJ of what it used to be. The com mission begau restocking the waters with shad in 18S0, and iu 1888 the catch was nearly double, and the in crease in the value of the shad taken was nearly $750,000. It rlfay not be possible to obtaiu such gopd results with salmon as with shad, and white fish, but there seems to be no reason why it should not bj done, as the methods now in use for hatching aud distributing fish are about as certain of securing the results desired as tbo3e used in sowing aud raising wheat. ' In order to render artificial propa gratiou a success, some plan for reg ulating fishing will have to be de vised so that an adequate number of fish to supply eggs for hatching can be seenred. This will bo diflicnlt on the Columbia on account of its be ing between two stntes, and Colonel McDonald says the United States ought to take control of interstate fisheries, but this would bo a dillieult thing to do now.
