Kansas is now agitating tlie ques tion of repealing its prohibitory amendment. Satisfactory arrangements have been made for the construction of the Hudson Bay railway. There is apparently foundation for the rumor at "Washington that Cor poral Tanner will be asked to resign the commissionership of pensions. Aiii. the papers of New York, Dem ocrat as well as Republican, unite in claiming that mayor Grant has turned all the official patronage of the city over to Tammany. As mayor Grant had only 114,111 votes and Ins oppo nents united had 158,302, leaving Tam many 44,000 in the minority, this is an apt illustration of how a united .mi nority rules over a divided majority. . The county court yesterday ordered 10,000 in bonds of the county, paid: this cuts off that much of the indebt edness of the county and the interest charges on that amount. The finan cial report of the county for the year ending June 30th, 1889, makes a very good showing, the figures indicating that during the year there has been a decrease in the countv debt of over $10,000. ' Tnn area of the territories of North and South Dakota, Montana and Washington is equal to the combined area of the German empire, Great Britain and Ireland, the Netherlands and Switzerland, the former being 3Gr,5S8 square miles and the latter 361,500 square miles. The European area contains a population of over 90,000,000; the American area has a present population of less than 1,000, 000: A man near Mansfield, Ohio, thus writes to secretary Rusk: "I wish you would send me at once, delivered to Mansfield, a pair of horses, two mules, a yoke of oxen, three Alderney cows and n spring wagon and a sulky plow Also, some seed, 1 suppose there are other things you give, but I won't bother you now. I will see senator Sherman when I go to town if he is home. He is a great friend of mine. During last election ho told me that I could have everything in the agricul tural department if I wanted it." Our congressman, Hon. Biuger Herman,n came down yesterday and went to inspect the grvernment work at the mouth of the river. Congress man Hermann utilizes his vacation from Washington in traveling around the state, noting its needs and placing himself in a position to speak intelli gently in the house of representatives regarding the requirements of the commonwealth he so ably represents. In speaking next winter of the pro gress of the work at the mouth of the Columbia and the good already re sultant he can speak from personal observation, and can cite senators Hoar, Allison, Pngh, and Dolph to substantiate his statements. Crop and Weather Report. Oregon State Weather Bureau, co operating with U. S. Signal Service, Central Office, Portland. Oregon. Crop-Weather Bulletin No. 19, for week ending July 13th, 1889. The temperature has been from C to 8 decrees above the normal, ex cept in a small area of Jackson Co., no ram fell in the state during tne Aveek. The sunshine was decidedly above the normal. Owinjr to forest fires the atmos phere has been somewhat smoky. The effect of these conditions on crops has been to allow their state to remain the same as thej' have been for the past two weeks. The notable event of the week was the severe thunder, rain and hail storm in Jackson county on the night of the 9th. A cloud-burst occurred which did considerable damage in sec tions of the county between Grant's Pass and Ashland. Through Wagner Creek valley the most damage occur red. About Talent grain was flat tened and ruined, and many orchards had their fruit injured. It is estimated that this cloud-burst caused a loss oi nearly 20,000. The warm, dry weather has been favorable to the wheat harvest which is now uuder full sway in all parts of the state. General reports indicate that fall wheat will be more than an average crop, while spring grain will be a short crop. On the 10th the first wheat was re ceived at a warehouse in Pendleton; the berry is small and shriveled, and the wheat is in quality second class. The yield of this first lot was about ten bushels per acre. Fruit prospects continue to be ex cellent. Peaches are coming into the markets in large quantities. Plums, apricots, corn and tomatoes are very plentiful. B. S. Pague. Observer U. S. Signal Service. Ass't. Director. TELEGRAPHIC Specials to TlieAstori.au. Aftermath of The Big Prize Tight. Porti-d, July 15. On Sunday George Weist, a 9 year old lad, resid ing at Stella, Cowlitz countv, was thrown from his horse and had his right leg fractured above the knee. He arrived at St. Vincent's hospital to day for treatment. George Gates, of Beaverton, was taken to the same hospital to-day. He ran a piece of iron into his right eve and had to have it taken out Yesterday John Murdock was thrown from a horse on 19th and B streets, and received a very severe in jury to his spine. He is now lying at tne uood Samaritan hospital and his recovery is doubtful. To-morrow is the day set for the trial of Sandy 01ds,'Emil Webber's slayer. REMARKS FROM JACOR. Chicago. Jmm in. l .nnf. nirriif Tnira Kilrain strinned to t,li skin mirl -was closely examined by a reporter, who couiu nna no mark upon him, not ccjj a lu&uuiuruuon or. ine bkiu. Jtvu- n declared he was not Kfirimis- ly punished by Sullivan and that the hot sun had more to do with his poor showing than Sullivan's blows. "It just weakened and died away and that was all there was to it." is the wav .Tnkft tint it He says he may go to California to try ior some or the big purses they offer there, but savs he can't sav whether he will go against Peter Jackson or not. PASSING AIiONG. Pittsburg, July 15. Jake Kilrain the pugilist and Mike Donovan passed through this city on the limited train this morning. They remained locked in the state room. TIIE REFEREE SHOWS UP. Jackson, Miss., July 15. John Fitz- patrick, of New Orleans, referee in the Sullivan-Kilrain fight, arrived here last night and went to the governor's office this morning and informed the governor that he had come to answer whatever charge might be lodged against lmn for violation of the laws of Mississippi All preliminaries were waived and Fitzpatrick gave bonds in the sum of 1,000 to appear for trial on the 8th inst. Foreign Salmon Shipments. Direct. Less than 100,000 cases of Columbia river salmon -will be shipped direct to England this season. The aggregate will be about 93,000 cases, which will be about 21,000 cases more than went in '88, and 30,000 cases more than went in '87 across the sea. Time was when the bnlk of this river's salmon pack was eaten in England, but our; iiiUglish friends cannot compete with the higher price that their American cousins offer, so the best salmon in the world goes to the be3t market m the world -the Mississippi valley and Atlantic states. The Jiorrowdale. Westland and Wanlock, now loading for England, will take all that goes to England from the Columbia river in '89, except the 8,460 cases that went on tne Marina visiter in June. The quality of the salmon canned on the Columbia this season was never ex celled, and those in England who are fortunate enough to get a little of the Columbia pack of '89 are to be con gratulated. Compared to outside sal mon, Columbia river salmon is as ten derloin steak compared to round. HE SENT IT EAST. For a year I was troubled with pnius In ray back and side, and headache?, the re sult of liver and kidney trouble. I was attracted to Joy's Vegetable Sarsnparilla, by the startling testimonials in the pa pers. They seemed so practical I was in duced to try it, knowing tl'at as it was purely vegetable, it would do no harm. It acted as a gentle laxative. After the second bottle my pains and aches disap peared. It did somucli for me that I sent several bottles to my family in New Jersey, who also took it with the most satisfactory results. fjCx) fiO-i.z,CC't ilastcr Caulker, foot Clay, Pan rrancisco.
