m Jw gatltj storan. ASTOKIA. OREGON: TUESDAY JULY 0. 1880. Dr. Johx A. Brooks is lecturing in Portland. He is the gentleman -who was the Prohibition nominee for vice president last year, and "wlio in one stump speech lost 100,000 votes. He had been telling a number of things in this life that he had done, and for which he -was sorry, "but thank God,'' said he, "I never was a Repub lican." A century of oratory has come to its close. There remains no question before us capable of creating a Henry, a Webster, or a Phillips. Slavery is abelished: creeds have softened their tone from the roar of an Apollyon to the cooing of doves. This is the day of laboratories and not of platforms. It is hardlv probable that any issue will speedily arise to pull at men's heart-strings and goad them to elo quence like that of the past The cry for freedom was heard in its rising demands until the land was fully free aud every man could think for him self. A heretic may now be as happy as are an orthodox saint. Bend slaves abolished. "We have only side is sues to contend over some litter to sweep up. There is nothing to create a hicher tvpe of oratorv than that of Robert Ingersoll and De "Witt Tal mage. Neither in pulpit nor on plat form do kings any longer appear. The decadence is worst of all in the pulpit, for while the platform was temporarv the pulpit remains. But there is no cause for lament. Each age has its own special duties and its special glory. Our boast is now of great inventors. We have passed out of the aje of destruction into that of construction. It is well. They Have the Enterprise. If Astoriaus are possessed of suf ficient enterprise they will soon be linked with the productive portions of the state by iron rails, and will utilize the Columbia river as an open high way from the inland empire to their wharves. Dalles Times-Mountain eer, G. Thought to Be in San Franciseo. A young gentleman named Merrill, fiom Astoria is after one Geo. Lee, who has been forging Merrill's name to telegrams and express money or ders. Lee is bieleved to have gone to San Francisco. Ashland Tid ings, 5. A Fortunate Druggist. Sir. Edwin W. Joy a.prosporous druggist " on the corner of Stockton and Market streets in San Francisco, probably never dreamed of rivaling in wealth the medi cine king of the country But various rumors having been floating around to the effect that lie has struck it big, an Examiner reporter was detailed to unearth thecaue. It seems that about seven years ago an English physician, n great stndentof Bot nny, located in this city. His practice was not extensive, and yet the few case that came to him attracted no little atten tion! His great success seemed to be in the treatment of liver and kidney disorders and -itiated blood. He seemed almost infallible, and his well-kept secret was as much a mystery as himself, a After his de parture Mr. Joy determined to fathom the secret, and copying all the prescriptions he bad filled for the erratic doctor, he began a systematic analysis. He discov ered running all through the prescript ions for liver and kidney troubles, vitiated blood and stomach disorders a couple of vegetable extracts indigenous to California so simple and so well known under home ly every day names to every school boy as to entirely dissipate the suspicion that they were the active principles involved Fo certain, however, was Mr. Joy that he had discovered the secret that he embod ied the new elements In a preparation of Sarsaparilla to disguise the taste, aud put it before his customers under the modest name of Joy's Vegetable Sarsaparilla. Im - mediately the same stories came back of its astonishiugeflects, and the mystery; was solved, and the talk it has createdJias already caused it to step into prominence, and orders pour in daily from all over the oast. And thus another California indus try leaps into existence. & r Examiner. Despatches stating that the North ern Pacific company intended to issue 315,000,000 in new bonds are con firmed at the offices of the company in New York, and one of the officials made the folio whig statement: "A plan for raising money to improve Pacific coast property and to provide additional equipment, and also to take up the Oregon Transcontinental bonds, nermittiuc that company to wind up its affairs, has been discussed, but nothing definite has been decided on. It will probably be in the shape of a collateral trust loan." The RcwlHscovery. You have heard vour friends and neigh bors talking about ir.
