The meanest man in the world is named Byer. He sold his neighbor Jones a half interest in a cow and then refused to divide the milk, main taining that Jones owned the front half of the cow. The cow recently hooked 'Byer, and now he is sning Jones for damages. The road from the Nehalem to Tillamook, for which the legislature appropriated 810,000, begins a little above the mouth of the river, and is indirectly a benefit to this county. Roads that a wagon can pass over nre as much a necessity to this connty as any other one thing else. F. L. Parker is drafting a big coun ty , map and went to Portland last' night to get authentic data ns to the southern boundary, some maps giving the mouth of the Nehalem, and oth ers Arch cape. .Arch cape is proba bly the true boundary of the southern limit of the state of Clatsop. At the time of- Ihe-smallpox on the Oregon, after the work of vaccinating, fumigating, etc., was completed and the vessel allowed to proceed, after a detention of seventy hours, health officer Estes put in a bill to the O. R. & N. Co., for 8500, for services ren dered, which the company declines to pay. Provision was made by the recent legislature for a health officer at Coos .Jjay and the mouth of the Umpqua. The particular bright enrolling clerk whb copied the bill made Coos bay reaauoast" Day. As tnere is no such bay in Oregon, Coos bay gets left,,whioh i3 unfair. The intent in such cases should be considered. -In the wording of an old deed a certain boundary line was described as terminating at a stump where Dan iel Harrington licked William Jones." This reminds a down east editor of the Green Bag that in the early days of the township of North Hatfield, Mass., a road was described as "run ning from Pochang meadow to the stream where old Mr. Doolittle's horse died." The new city directory of Portland, and Astoria, is just received. The bookjeontains over a thousand pages, and seems to be a very accurate and comprehensive publication. It is the first directory of the kind, we have everliad of this city, and will doubt leas be appreciated by the business community. The publishers, R. L. Polk & Co., have used every endeavor to make the work accurate and reliable.- - B. F. DoweU, an old time Repub lican, who is now in Washington City, writes to the Eugene Jeurnal: "There has been a deluge of letters to the Oregon and California Repub lican representatives and senators for the last forty days, seeking office for themselves or their friends. From the best information I can get there are at least, on an averace. not less than fifty applicants for every office in Or egon." A dwelling house in Montesano, iuu property oi n. au iwiett, was to tally destroyed by fire Thursday morning, xue Duuaing wa3 occupied by Wallace Price and family, who lost heavily in their household goods ana wearing apparel. Tne adjoining buildings were injured, one being oaaiy ournea ana nearly ruined. The total lo38 was about 82,000, part ly insured. The cause of the fire was a heated stovepipe. A funny accident happened the barkeeper of Alex. Gilbert's saloon yesterday. To clean out the chimney he fired a revolver up the flue. When thff bystanders had got some of the soot out of their eyes and when the cloud of black powder had cleared away a little, they found the barkeep a black monument, and unable to do more than gasp for breath. Half an hour's work got off some of the soot. But he cleared the chimney. The Loyal Legion of Astoria was organized under the auspices of the W. T. C. If we know all the methods of ap proach adopted by an enemy we nre the better enabled to ward off the danger and pospone the moment when surrender becomes inevitable. In many instances the inherent strength of the body suffices to enable it to op pose the tendency toward death. Many however have lost these forces to such an extent that there is little or no help. In other cases a little aid to the weakened Lungs will make all the difference between sudden death and many years of useful life. Upon the first symptoms of a Cough, Cold or any trouble of the Throat or Lungs, give that old and wellknown remedy Boschee's German Syrup, a earful trial. It will prove what thousands say of it to be, the "bene actor of any home." In Portland. A good laugh is better thau a course of medicine, and if there were any present at the New Park theater last evening who need the latter surely tney must have gone away at the fall of the enrtain completely cured. Never, since the opening of the bouse has an audience been so continuously convulsed with laughter as they were last night in witnessing Daly's side splitting comedy, "A Night OfL" It is by all odds the funniest and most enjoyable comedy we have witnessed and will doubtless fill the house the remainder of the week. Seeds! Seeds! Seeds!. Garden, vegetable, grass, and flower, at Thompson & Ross'. THE PILOT SCHOONERS. The Matter Before the Portland Board of Trade. At the last meeting of the Portland board of trade Mr. McKee laid the following letters, addressed to him as a member of the committee on com merce, before the beard: Astoria, March 5. E. D. MoKee, Esq. Dear Sir: After bavin cr read the schedule rates for towage and pilotage, issued by the O. R. &. N. company in the Ore oonian. wa find that there is not a possible show for any of the pilot schooners to exist, and as a conse quence the pilots have to withdraw and seek other employment. The W. T. pilots have concluded to send their schooner up north sealing or to dispose of the vessel. The Oregon pilot schooner cannot be maintained if the O. R. & N. company carries pilots on their tugboats, because then the same discrimination will take place, which gave the Columbia river bar such &fine name some years ago. There was a proposition made verbally by the Portland board of trade to mantain the pilot boat Gov ernor Moody at all hazards, and publicly made so by the Hon. D. P. Thompson on tne noor oi tne nouse of representatives at Salem on the day of the passage of H. B. 37, that he would be personally responsible that snid schooner should be main tained on the bar, come what may. Knowing you to be a member of the board oi trade, l taite tne uoeriy to ask you the favor of having the mat ter brought before your honorable body, and we will anxiously wait your reply. J. E. Campbell, for Oregon Bar Pilots. Astoria, March 9. E. D. McKee. Esq. Dear Sir: Have received your kind letter and contents noted. With regard to cost of maintaining pilot schooner iu active service would first state crew's wages, which amount to the following hgnres: Ono boat keeper, 550; two deckhands at 840 each, 80; one cook, 840. Provisions and other necessaries have never been below 8125 per month as yet. At the commerce committee meet ing it was agreed by Mr. W. H. Cor- bett and Mr. D. P. Thompson, that 8150 per month was not by any means too much, and that they con sidered that amount just a fair com pensation. There are now six pilots attached to the schooner, and any less number would not be sufficient to do the work satisfactorily. J. E Campbell. The appropriation from the state of 81,500 per annum is devoted to pay the insurance on the vessel, which amounts to 8935, and the re maining 8565 will be fully expended in recaulking the vessel outside, as she has not been caulked since new. J. E. C. DISCUSSINO THE SUBJECT. Mr. McKee said the board had promised to maintain the pilot schooner and he thought the inqui ries in regard to the matter should be answered honestly. Mr. Dodd said he supposed the pilots were a little angry and prob ably wished to punish us for procur ing the passago of the pilotage bill. He would like to have some more information I on the subject He would move to refer the communica tions to the navigation committee, and that Hon. H. W. Corbett and Hon. D. P. Thompson be added to the committee. Mr. Pope said he understood that the O. R. & N. Co. pledged them selves to maintain the pilot schooner outside when she was wanted. At some seasons there was very little use Tor Tier. Mr. McKee said he wished to cor rect Captain Pope. Mr .Cookingham had stated at the meeting of the board that he had not power to say that his company wonld maintain the pilot boat, but he thought they would do so, and on this understand ing the board had pledged them selves. The motion to refer was put and carried. Oregonian 12. "A Night Off." "A Night Off" was greatly enjoyed at the Academy of Music last even ing by a large audience. Tim de lightful comedy, adapted from the German by Augnstin Daly, is ono of the brightest and most ingenious pieces of its kind in the modern dra matic repertoire. Clever in plot, sim ple in structure, exhilarating in hu mor it is "a thing of beauty and a joy forever." One can relish its divert ing episodes over and over again with unabated zest. The audience last night, time and time again, fairly ex ploded with laughter, and the same sight will doubtless bo witnessed every evening during the week. Buffalo Courier. m - PROGRESS.
