Five thousand miles and fourteen days from San Francisco. It is 12,000 miles by ship from Liverpool through the Suez canal. It is five days from Yokohama to Hongkong and yet some parts are so near the Asiatic continent that you can cross in a few hours in a canoe. Two aays' sail will bring you into Corea and Kamschatka is - . m m . within a tew nours' journey ot the northern borders of Japan. It is a land of islands and the chain which constitutes it extends, says one authority, a distance of 2,000 miles. Most of these islands are small, but the country all told has enough territory for a big nation and several of its islands are big ger than ' many of our American states. The island of Hondo, which is the main part of the coun try, and the one in which the big cities are located, has 25,000,000 population, and the area of Japan all told is bigger' than" Italy, and you oou'd lose' Prussia insido of it. All tho territory of Great Britain and Ireland arc not equal to Japan, and the state of New York is only one-third its size. The country has to-day moro people than we had in 1S70, and its pop ulation is about equal to that of Great Britain and Ireland. Ac cording to the census which has just been completed Japan has a population of over 39,000,000. Tokio Corr. JV. Y. World. Three hundred Miles an Hour by Rail Road. A railroad is being constructed in Baltimore, the speed upon which is oxpected to be three hun dred miles an hour. It is not for passenger travel, however, but for parcels. The cars will be driven by electricity .through a tube two feet in diameter, and are expected to be perfectly under control of the operator. If the Texperimental line now building should be a suo cess, a line will bo built, probably, between Baltimore and Washing ton. Personal Dear Bro. Meek, Ed. "Tho Central Methodist," Catlettsburg, Ky.
