The people who have been "poi soned" by eating canned salmon bad been very scarce this year, not one case having been reported up to Monday last, when a San Diego, Gal., dispatch told of a family named Bal timore who had been "poisoned" by eating canned salmon and canned oysters. But as a sequel to the sad tale comes the news that the canned salmon had been through a big fire about a week ago. This is a cat of another color. Experiments are dangerous, and the San Diego peo ple and every other people may be assured that eating canned salmon nfter the cans with tho salmon in them have been in a burning build ing, is a poor way to realize on the insurance money. The average sal mon is not a fire proof safe. What tho San Diego family yclept Balti Baltimoro appear to want is not canned salmon bnt canned salaman der. . . F. Bartoldes deserves a word of praise for the faithful and efficient way be has administered the af fairs of his road district. Bonds are one of this country's greatest needs; there has been money enough collected for "roads" to build a mag nificent causeway from here to Ne halem. Mr. Bartoldes has so worked in his district that one can now ride or drive in comfort from Astoria to five miles beyond Olney, making over fifteen miles of good road. B. Gal lagher is another man who has done all he could to help the county in this important regard. The way to do a thing is to do it, and the way to have roads is to spend all possible col lected for that purpose on the roads. In making a road from beyond Wal luski to Olney passable, Mr. Bartol des and every one who aided in any way have added to the value of every foot of farm and timber land in that part of the country. Referring to the balloon found yesterday near Providence, R. I., with the name "Carl Myers," and tho penciled words, "Met our death in the clouds," Mad amo Charlotte, who made tho balloon ascension yesterday, says: "On the 26tb inst, Leon A.Dare and Carlotta, wifo of Carl Myers, were to have had a balloon race from Syracuse, and yesterday Carlotta was to have made an ascension from Lockport. Tho name found on the lost balloon is that of manager Carl Myers. I can not believe Carlotta or Dare are hurt, though they may be. I have not heard anything iu relation to the matter, which makes me think it can be neither of them. Perhaps I have not been telegraphed forfearl should be frightened." AN ELECTION BET. The Thibetans kept up a furious fire with cannon and muskets, but their arms being obsolete, had but little effect except at close quarters, to which the advancing colnmn soou brought them. The leading newspapers urge Canada to seek closer trade relations with tho Aus tralian colonies. The Daily Chroni cle sees in such a policy a strength ening of ties binding the colonies to one another and the promotion of the idea of imperial unity, and hopes that the various parts of the empire will ultimately recognize the wisdom of forming themselves into a sort of zoUverein. Tho empire then could then afford to adopt between them the free trade policy existing between the states of the American republio, and protection, in dealing with for eign countries. STORM ON THE WEST COAST. New York, Sept 29. Valparaiso advices to September 17th state that shipping was terribly damaged in the harbor by the great northern gale. The Chilean barks' Crtstina, Na varrn and Bildina collided and de stroyed each other. The bark Success parted her chains and was driven ashore near the fort The Andes broke up in an incredibly short time. The Success was bound from New York for California and put in here. The Frenoh bark Etolile du Sud dragged down to the British bark Cambrian, and iu consequence of frequent collisions between the two the former foundered. The latter went down an hour later. Part of the crew of the IS toile duSud jumped on board the Cambrian while the vessels were locked, believing her to be the safer craft of the two, but, with one exception, all perished when the latter vessel went down. The crew of the Cambrian consisted of captain Armstrong, first mate Brison, second mate Richmond, carpenter Nelson, Stewart Ellison, sailmaker Judson, seamen Gillis, Johnson, Ben inck, Shools, payee Wickman; ap prentice Dyer. Fielding Smith, Mas ban. The captain aud the ' last named apprentice were saved. Out of the crew of the Etoile du Sud one man was killed by falling spars. Tho vessel was beached for the pur poso of saving her cargo. The sea was comparatively quiet when she was beached, but an honr afterward huge rollers were breaking over the ship. She has since broken up. A Warning. The modes of death's approach are various, and statistics show conclu sively that more persons die from dis eases of tho Throat and Lungs than- any other. It is probable that every one, withont exception, receives vast numbers of Tubercle Germs into the system and where these germs fall upon suitable soil they start into life and develop, at first slowly and is shown by; a slight tickling sensation in the' throat and if allowed to cou tinuo their ravages they extend to tho lungs producing Consumption and to the head, oausiug Catarrh. Now all this is dangerous and if allowed to proceed will in timo cause death. At the onset you must act with prompt ness; allowing a cold to go without your attention is dangerous and may lose yon your life. As soon as yon feel that something is wrong with your Throat, Lungs or Nostrils, ob tain a bottle of Boschee's German Syrup. It will give you immediato relief. N.
