The bill providing for the adjustment of Indian depredation claims passed the house on Saturday night. California, Oregon, Nevada and the Pacifio territories have all had bills pending for the relief of their citizens. The adjustment will in volve claims on tho Pacific coast, amounting to 5,000,000. The congressmen from ,the west are jubilant over this victory. Whit thorne of Tennessee, Hermann of Oregon, and Symes of Colorado, have been the mo.st active legis lators in this matter. Mr. Whittborne, chairman of the committee; stated to the house that this measure met the ap proval of the department, and was the best upon which all could agree. Representative Hermann stated in debate that thousands of these claims are now pending before the committee, and he believed that tho.e from Oregon alone will ap proximate in value nearly $2,000, 000. The bill provides for a commis sioners' court of three judges, to be knotyn as the "court of Indian depredation claims," with author ity to review all testimony and affidavits on claims now before the interior department, allowed and .disallowed, and to consider others to be filed and to award to claimants the actual cash value of property taken and destroyed at the time and plaoe of depredation. The judgementis final, but rehear- mgs aro permitted on proper show ing, if made before tho estimates are submitted from the' treasury department to congress for the ap propriation. Five special agents shall be appointed, with power to take depositions and procure in vestigations as tho court shall or der. The parties are not required to be present by attorneys, but when so present tne court shall notify the attorney-general, who snail then appear and defend, on behalf of the gevernment: other wise not. It also provides that all testimony and reports of agents shall bo entertained by the court, and such value awarded them as, in its judgement, is right and prop er, without limitation by the technical rules of. evidence in courts of law.
