Davis, mas ter of the brig James A. Borland, is in the " city taking a cargo of lumber from the mill at Seatco for market at San Diego. Captain Davis, in conversation with your correspondent, related some cir cumstances " of no little interest. He came' from New York quite recently to engage in this traffic He is master of his own vessel and doing business independently. This is his second trip. On the first he sent a communication to nine different mills on the sound, asking for lumber, for which he proposed to pay cash. From some he received no reply. Others told him they were very sorry, but were so crowded with orders that they could not accommodate him. The Tacoma mill, in reply to his letter, asked him where the cargo was to be shipped. He knew, with this evidence corroborating what he had heard, that if the cargo were for foreign shipment he could have it, otherwise not, and so, he says, he declined to an swer, as he did not think an an swer to that question was dne under the circumstances and the face of cash offered in payment. ' "The fact is," said captain Davis, "the San Francisco lumber' trust controls pretty nearly all the business here on the sound and in California. They have their yards stocked with lumber in San Diego but will not drop one cent in price. I propose to enter the lumber carrying trade, and if I am suc cessful it will have the effect of bringing a number of vesssels around from New York for the same purpose. One other is in deed about to start. I am com pelled, however, to buy from inland mills, as all on the water are under the control of the com bination and refuse to sell me. It cost me about $2000 in delay-and expense to learn what I do, but I have learned it, and so waste no more time, but deal directly with inside mills which, although a little more expensive in the matter of handling, will enable me to sell $5 or $6 lower than the. combination rates if they hold them as at pres ent. It is well known that this combination has bought off one or two mills on the sound, paying them a fixea rate per annum for keeping the mill in idleness,- so that the product shall not run above their own demand. Of course they can, if they choose, drop rates below any figure at which outsiders can afford to sell. That condition of affairs, however, will not last until the completion of the big mills now .under con struction here at Tacoma, and which no doubt, will be followed by others. These are stalwart concerns, wholly independent of the combine, and are operated by practical loggers, so that if there be any advantage it will be with them. The big Pacific mill is owned by some of the largest log ging concerns on the bound; it is nearly completed and will soon enter in active service, and. then we may expect to do business di rect on tho water front." The surveys at present being made for the Kansas City, El Paso and Mexican railroad, at a point north latitude 33 degrees "and west longitude 10G degrees, have nassed along the lava flow which by the local population fs called the Molpais. It consists of a sea of molten black glass, agitated at the moment of cooling jn ragged waves of fantastic shapes. These lava waves or ridges are ironvten" to twelve feet high, with combing crests. This lava ilow is about forty miles long from northeast to southwest, and from one to ten miles wide. For miles on all sides the country is the most desolate that can bo imagined. It has been literally burned up. It con sists of fine white ashes to any depth which, so far, has been dug down. To the north of the lava flow, and lying in a country equally desolate and arid, the sur veyors have come 'upon the ruins of Gran Guivera, known already to the early Spanish explorers, but which have been visited by white men men less often even than the mysterious ruins of Palenque in Central America. Only a few people of Socorro And White Oaks nave Deen a wan vruivera, because it is at present forty miles from water. The surveyors found the ruins to be of gigantic stone buildings madj in the most substantial man ner and of grand proportions. One of them was four acres in ex tent. All indications around the ruins point to the existence here at one time of dense population. No legend of any kind exists as to now mis great, city was uesirovuu or when it was abandoned. One of the engineers attached to the surveying expedition advances the theorv that Gran Guivera was in existence and abundantlv sup pliedwitbwwatl'-rrt-the!-rtirno tho terrific volcanic eruption took place. Babes in The Wood. From 'old Virginia comes a pret ty, half pathetic story of two little lads of three and six years who were lost for two days and nights in the Shenandoah mountains, E though the whole valley was out looking for them. They were found at last cuddled in, dry leaves in the shelter'of some big rocks, and the little ones' clothes to the practiced mother's eye; were wo f uliy awry. Asking the reason, she was told that upon their first night out the baby had utterly refused to sleep in his clothes, so the elder undressed him, spread his little skirts upon the rock that served for a bed, put the bonnet under his curly head, and at morning put on the clothes again as best his tiny fingers could. Throughout their wanderings, which extended for miles, the little fellows had kept the tin bucket with which they had been sent to the spring for water. Probity, independence, unself ishness, tender regards for the feelings of others, and a hearty hatred for whatever is mean, tricky, vulgar, or profane theso are among the qualities that dis tinguish the true gentleman. There-' is a peculiar misunderstanding about such a low temperature in the scientific world. I remember reading in the Popular - Science Monthly, which is supposed to be accurate, a statement to the effect that in such cold meat taken from a boil ing pot will freeze solid before it can be put in the mouth. . That is nonsense. Why, I have been naked in a temperature of G8P below". It was inside asnow hut as I took off my clothes and got into a sleeping bag. It is the wind that plays mischief with every body; but, fortunately, tho colder it gets tho stiller it gets, and when it gets away down it's pretty quiet I can tell you. But when it gets to ordinary temperature, then comes the 'torture. When I got on.the whaler and began to get south I besran to 'suffer excruciat ingly and thought T should suffo cate; a fish out of water was noth ing to it."
