w T&to gaily gtftonau. ASTOEIA. OREGON: WEDNESDAY- JULY 25, 18S8. a "Women have the municipal suffrage in Finland that ia unmarried -women and widows since 1879. Recently a disgusted Oshkosh, Wis., juryman offered to pay the sum in dispute if the claimant would dis miss the case. The offer was refused. Mb. Niles of Boston told the Chris tian Endeavor convention that 80,000 human souls go from the United States to perdition every year. Mr. Niles calls for home missionaries. The southwestern "Deep-water'' convention met at Fort Worth, Texas, on the 10th inst Deep water on the Texas coast means trade with all the world and commercial greatness for the southwest Good harbors will make Texas a greater New York. This is the spirit of Texas just now, 1 William Blakie, the noted athlete, is an active soldier in the white cros3 army, whioh enjoins upon its mem bers the duty of treating all women with respect and protecting them from wrong; to frown down indecent jests or language, and to endeavor to spread .white cross army principles among companions and younger brothers. It is a pleasure to chronicle the fact that about the newest enterprise in the city is paying handsome divi dendswe refer to the Astoria street railway company. It gives the town a metropolitan appearance, and is paying good interest on the invest ment The only ones that this last fact may displease are those who stood by and prophesied failure, and who have missed one chance of being able to chuckle "I thought so." The stupendous plan for supplying the city of Liverpool with water in volves the removal of a whole Welch village, including woods, cottages, churches, etc., this immense spaoe to be devoted to a reservoir four and one-half miles long by half a mile to a mile broad, and eighty feet deep. There are to be three lines of pipe, each sixty-eight miles long, with fil tering beds and secondary reservoirs, and the cost of the aqueduct alone is estimated at 315,000,000. Edmund Stevenson, president of the New York state board of emigra tion, has been out west looking into the condition of emigrants who have gone out to the prairie lands; and ob servation has convinced him that the country can find room for all the ag riculturists that may come for the next fifty years. At the Duluth coal and ore docks men receive 50 cents per hour, or $5 per day, while farm hands in Dakota get 82 a day and board, and farmers complaining that they cannot get help enough to get in the wheat harvest Eioht years ago a large part of the nickel used in this country was made at Phrenixville, Pa by Joseph Whar ton. The duty at that time was $2 a pound, and Mr. Wharton could pro duce it at S3 a pound, and sell it for $4 a pound. Nickel was put on the free list, and as Germany could man ufacture it at 2 a pound, Mr. Whar ton had to shut down. Nickel imme diately took a rise to 84 a pound, the price it had been before the duty was taken off, and as it continued firm at that figure, Mr. Wharton again com menced manufacturing. Nickel at once dropped down to a price he could not reach, and again he had to closedown. This little game ofsee- Bawwouldhave continued indefinitely, probably, if Mr. Wharton had con imued to tanea nandintne game, but as his hand was bound to be a losing one, he gracefully withdrew. What are the results? Nickel costs as much as it did before the duty was taken off, Mr. Wharton's works are closed, and his 500 workmen forced to seek other employment, the town of Phcenixville no longer flourishes, and all to support a foreign industry that makes an enormous profit out of the metal they sell us, because we are such simpletons as to give them an opportunity. A child enjoys himself more hear tily, when he does enjoy himself, than an older person does. That everybody admits. A child suffers at heart more keenly, when he does suffer at heart, than does an older person. That lis not recognized by everybody. A child's power of en joyment is made a proverb. A child's power ot mental suffering is hardly thought of by the world generally. Now and then the1 deliberate suicide of a child because of some little dis appointment to which an 'adult would hardly have given a second thought, startles the community and is spoken of as a very remarkable occurrence. Yet, as a matter of fact and as a mat terof course, 'a child's intenser sen sitiveness gives it the same added power of suffering as ot enjoyment, J and the little ones about us have a harder time of it in the days of their childhood than wo know anything about save as we remember our childood, and retain more or less of its freshness in our maturer years. We say that "we take things more philosophically as we grow older," which is only another way of saying that we grow tougher-hearted. But even if this be the case with ourselves, let us remember that the little ones who lack our measure of philosophy deserve, therefore, a larger share of our.Bympathy. It is good to have the lightheartedness of a child. It is hard to have tho heart-racking sor rows of a child. What's the Matter with Yakima? The Yakima Signal says: It is re ported that same of our local mag nates, who are well loaded with town lots, have withdrawn their lots from the market It is granted that a man has a right to do with his own as he wills; but there is also the other rule that you must not use your property in such a way as to injure your neigh bor. We assert that the existence of a large number of barron lots in the very heart of our city is injurious to the prosperity of the municipality. The appearance of these large barren tracts in the center of the city is ap palling to the stranger first coming within our gates, and always causes hesitation and inquiry; and when this inquiry further develops the fact that tnese unimproved barrens are neia at rates so high as to discount the fu ture, and within the meana ot onlv the most wealthy speculators, it really seems as it our local nabobs, instead of encouraging development, were seeking to discourage and drive away outside capital. We know of many investors who have been scared away by this short-sighted policy. A word to the wise is sumcient, and we nope that this subjeot will be considered in a proper manner. Tell me not in mournful nmmbers, That the town is full of gloom. For a man's a crank that slumbers In these bustling days of boom. Life is real, life is earnest, And the grave is not its goal; t Every dollar that thou turaest Helps to make the old town roll. But enjoyment and not sorrow, Is our destined end or way; If yon have no money borrow; Buy a corner lot each day. Lives of great men all remind us, We can make our lives the same; Let us leave the chumps behind us. And we'll get there just the same. In this world's broad field of battle, In the bivouac of life, Let us make the dry bones rattle, Buy a corner for your wife. Let us then be up and doing, With a heart for any fate, Still achieving, still pursuing, Booming early, booming late. i THE JUDUE AHD THE Xl'DEX. "What is your business, my festive old maid?' "I am a mind healer. Bir," she sayed. "You've a mind of your own that is sadly frayed, And needs to be heeled and tapped," he sayed. On a branch of the tariff a poor Mug wump sat, Sighing "Blaine, Oh! James Blaine, Oh. James Blaine. Oh!" And I said, little Mugwump, what now is all that, About "Blaine, Oh! James Blaine, Oh! James Blaine, Oh!" Are your brains really shattered, poor ieuow, i cried, Or have all your friends and relations just died?" But all that this Mugwump so gruesome replied, Was "Blaine, Oh! James Blaine, Oh! James Blaine, Ohl" When Yon Go to Portland Frank Fabre, Occidental hotel restau rant, will be glad to see his Astotia friends, A good dinner at a moderate price and everything in season. PHIL. A.
