Lnf avetta Grover. who was a United States senator from the state of Oregon . Tit- X. A 1077 in UTornV, A 1RS3 visited the senate chamber this morn ing. haYrnsrinst returned fromEnrope. It was his first visit since his term of offioe expired, and he received a very hearty greeting irom ine men wno were formerly his colleagues. Mr. Grover is a tall, spare man, with iron gray hair and beard, blue eyes and prominent nose. He is a lawyer and real estate dealer in Portland, and is s man of considerable means. While a senator he took little part in the proceedings, and owing to ill health was often absent from the sessions. He took his seat in the senate on the same day that Ruther ford B. Hayes took possession 01 the White House. Had the Democrats in all the states acted as firmly as Mr. Grover did Mr. Tilden might have been inaugurated. At the time of the presidential election in 1876, Mr. Grover was governor of the state of Oregon. After the election there was a disnute as to the eligibility of one of the Republican electors, be cause of the fact that he ueiu a com mission as post-master. Governor Grover. therefore, promptly cave a certificate of election to the man who received the next highest vote. This man happened to be Patrick Cronin, who at once became celebrated from ono end of the country to the other as the possessor of a large and very red nose. "Cronin.s nose'' became a standing joke, and ho appeared with it before tho electoral commission. The Democrats voted that Grover and Cronin were right, but the majority decided that tho ineligible postmas ter's election should stand, and the three Oregon votes wero conse quently counted for Hays. In the senate to-day Mr. Grover's presence recalled the incident ot Mr. uromn and his uosi. and it wm laughingly referred to by several senators. Wasliington Cen: N. Y.Snn,MaylO Sleeplessness. Griswoldsville, (Ja. A San Francisco dispatch says that the expectations that the new Chinese treaty will soon be rati fied is apparently causing a great rush from China. It is stated that according to the custom house figures of 12.G00 prior iesiden' who can rightfully claim that tiiio, over 7,000 have already liet'n landed by the courts, leaving in the neighborhood ot 5000 who will have to return before the new treaty goes into effect. Besides these, Chinamen who have received certificates will have to return, and there are said to he 31,000 of these in China G5,000 certificates having been issued, of which 36,000 have been cancelled by the return of the holders to this coun try. In addition to these two classes, there will undoubtedly be a large number who will attempt to land under the "prior residence" plea. Geo. Andrews, of Lowell, with ulcers over half his body, cured by Ayer's Sarsaparilla. New yokk, May 29. The World in a double leaded itilici zed editorial adds this to its former anouncetnent in regard to Blaine's formal withdrawal : "We repeat witli absolute confidence, our announcement, and add to it this further informatien: Mr. Blaine has already written to one of his most intimate friends posi tively refusing the use of his name as presidential candidate, and de claring that he could not under any circumstances, accept the nomination. Our Republican friends may accept this informa tion as true. Mr. Blaine is out of the race." There is no city in the United States exempt from the dangers of malaria. Ayer's Ague Cure neutralizes all miasmatic poisons. After the trouble with the Sail ors' union at Port Townsend Sat urday night eight men, together with the union agent, were ar rested, under tbeterritorial law for riot. Shlloh's Catarrh Kemeay a posi tive cure for Catarrh, Diptheria and Canker Mouth. Sold by J. C. Dement. The Boarder Had The Best of It. A good joke is told on a Tacoma hotel proprietor. A stranger who had boarded with him a week or so, asked the proprietor how far it was to Mount Tacoma, wbich ap peared to be scarcely a couple of miles distant, although nearer a hun dred. The proprietor winked at the guests and said that perhaps it was a a mile away. The boarder said he be lieved he would walk out to it for ex ercise. The landlord, encouraged the tenderfoot, who, after borrowing the proprietor's fine spyglass, immedi ately departed. The joke was too rich for the landlord to keep, and he treated all hands at the bar and chuckled to think that he had played it so fine on the tenderfoot. The boarder, however, was no spring spring chicken, and in the course of time was drinking beer with a couple of chums at Puyallup and telling them how he had played the Tacoma ite for two weeks' board. The pro prietor at last tumbled to the racket and found the valise left filled with brick bats and that the tramp had carried off seventeen clean towels and everything else he could get in his pockets. The proprietor now has printed on a card, "sixty miles to Mount Tacoma." Cowlitz Advocate.
