Fire! PORTLAND AND ASTORIA RAILROAD. What the future of Portland is to be is a question that is just now attracting much attention and some solicitude. There will probably be something of a test for her to main tain the commercial supremacy in the future which she has enjoyed in the past. There will, perhaps, be elements and principles invol ved in the future business of the city very different from what have hitherto existed. Portland cannot bo said ever to have had a rival or to have had any occasion to dread one. By accident almost she has become what sho is. Thus far there has been nothing to say nay to her prosperity. None'who have come here and entered into busi ness have brought or added any thing to her advantages; she had them all to begin with, supplied by nature, in the courses and con fluences of streams, the location of mountain passes, the contiguity of the valleys, and her accessibility by ocean vessels. The productive ness and resources of the country created a commerce that required a central point as an emporium for the transaction of the business of the country, and Portland was adopted as the point that could supply the demand more conven iently than any other. For this reason merely, merchants have settled here and engaged in busi ness. They have most usually been successful because there was a substantial business to be Jone and they were at the right point to enjrajrc in it. But the time has arrived when there appears to be an actual need that something be done in the interest and for the welfare of Portland; and we be lieve that most everybody lecog nizes tho fact that something should be done, but no two per sons seem to be agreed upon any one plan for preserving and ad vancing the interests of the city. To our mind there is nothing that will tend so much to dissipate and annul the railroad schemes and combinations to injure Portland, as the building of a railroad from Portland to Astoria. The mouth of the Columbia river is the equal, if not tho superior of Puget sound as t seaport. The entrance to tin mouth of the Columbia is not i-o hazardous as are tin straits or Ku ca and Puget sound. The ! tance across the Columbia bar in very short, only about a mile or lew, while from the entrance of the straits ol l'uca into the Sound is over a hundred miles. With prop er care the entrance to the mouth of the Columbia is ample and suf ficient, to say nothing of future improvements that are sure to be made there. The distance across the Columbia bar is so short that the actual service of towing a ves sel in or out of the mouth of the Columbia is far less than towing through the straits of Fuca into Puget sound; so that, for actual cost, vessels can bo towod into the mouth of the Columbia cheaper than into Puget sound. Besides the advantages of convenient rail road connection with the seaport at Astoria, it will be sure to result from the building of such a rail road that ample improvements and reuueeu towage will bo made at the mouth of the Columbia, and it will cause the river channels from Astoria to Portland to be so im proved that almost any sized ves sel may come here at any time of trie year. In our opinion the fu ture great need of Portland is a seaport other than Puget sound, because at the latter placo the JNortnern racihc, which now seems hostile to Portland, is centering all its influence and power. Tt is useless for Portland to hope or ex pect anything from the arrogant Northern Pacific unless we are able first to defy it. As we sug gested last week, it is highly prob able that Portland can secure the Manitoba, (or Jim Hill,) railroad which is coming through the rich est portion of eastern Washington territory to come to Portland via the Klickitat pass and crossing the Columbia at La Camas or Van couver. With such railroads trav ersing eastern Washington terri tory and coming to Portland, and a railroad from Portland to Asto ria as a seaport, we will be entire ly independent and have commer cial communications with every portion of the Pacific northwest, suporior to every other" point, and a seaport wholly dependent upon our trade and commerce, to do our ocean shipping. When the Asto ria road is built and the Manitoba road is completed to Portland, then it will be in order to put up a fence between Portland and the Sound. Oregon Sitings. Remarks From Mrs. John L. New York, March 11.--The Herald's East Centerville, R. I., special says: Mrs. John L. Sulli van is living quietly here with her mother, and when told the result of the fight, she said: "I'm glad of it. I wish Mitchell had killed him. He is great, but no good. He of ten told me he could do nothing unless he made a big assault at first and overpowered his man by his superior weight. Mitchell is a dodger, and he kept him at bay until he lost his wind, and then my brave John L. was winded and helpless. lie is a greatly overrated man. He will die a beggar, as he deserves to do for his ill treatment of me." "Will you live with him again?" "Never. If he was made of gold and thero was another man in the world, I would not listen to him again." "Do you propose to get a di vorce?" "Yes, as soon as I raise the mortgage on my house in Boston, which he contracted to pay off." Failure of Handy & Co. Sax Francisco, March 11. The firm of L. N. The basis of representation will be two delegates from each congress ional district in the several states and territories, and two at largo from each state. The call says in part: "This is not a movement of politicians intent on capturing the spoils of office. Let the coming convention be the nucleus for a grand federation of labor; let us agree upon essential principles common to all, and leave tho do tails of opinion and thcorios to be settled in the respective stato or ganizations, as the. diversified in terests of the country may demand.
