NO MOBE A MYSTERY. The Truth About the Murder cf Nathan in New York Oity. The murder of Amos J. Snell in Chicago recalls the murder of Nathan in New York. ' Both men were of solitary habits, large real and larger reputed wealth, and both were believed to keep great sums in their houses. Mr. Snell is known to have been killed by bur glars whom first he tried to kill. Mr. Nathan was found dead at the foot of his open safe. He had been brained by the ugly, short and heavy weapon which polico and thieves' slang calls a "dog." The character of the Snell mur derers is known. The Nathan crime remained for a long time a mystery and bred cruel and false suspicions against Washington Nathan, a son of the murdered man, at odds with his father and who benefited by his death. The son proved an alibi which identi fied him with a violation of the seventh commandment and acquit ted him of the charge of infract ing the sith. Probably the murderers of Mr. Sue!! will be found. Putting the criminal classes in a sieve and shaking them through will very likely secure the guilty in this case. It is not generally known by the public that the police and law authorities havo long been awaie who killed Mr. Nathan. Billy Forrester killed him. Forres was a burglar and safe-breaker, lie entered the house by tlift base ment, made a noise on purpose to bring the old man downstairs late at night to where he was, killed him with a "dog," to get the keys to open the safe, found nothing in it worth speaking of, and left the premises by the front door, which was found open at 5 o'clock iu the morning. He was observed hv an Irish woman next door, who was being served by a milkman. The authorities learned ihe.'. facts in a queer way. The "log" was described in the newspapers. It had s-ingular scratches on it. A coin icl in S:ir ."sing knew it was Korrc-lot.-(iig." He ollered for a pardon, to identify it among ,-iiiy number of ''dogs" the police mirlit lay out on a table, and to desi-riii Forrestor :ts we'll. The !' painted a large number of ' 1 icil so as to make them all i u!. alike. The convict at once piekcit out FoiTestor's ''dog."' The !-. tin try was scoured for the crimitia1. He gave himself up in New Or leans in the hope of being taken to Joliet prison, Illinois, from which he had escaped, and of not being btought to New York. He was brought there, however, but had grown thin, cut oh" his hair and beard, had dyed his skin and the woman, though she said he looked very much like the man she saw, could not positively iden tify him. The charge was dis missed for want of evidence. He went to Joliet and died there of consumption, but to his counsel in New York he confessed the facts herein stated to maketheirdefen.se of him more intelligent, and these facts have never before been pub lished. The simplicity of the Nathan and Snell murders was their greatest security from discovery. a complicated crime abounds in circumstances. Circumstances are God's detectives. Still, if they have a Campbell or a Brynes in Chicago, or if they have a man whose real sagacity equals -the reputation whioh journalism and John Hawthorne are building up for Byrnes, they may discover Mr, Snell's murderers, who, it is to be hoped, will not escape conviction throughjsuch a miscarriage of jus tice as legal ingenuity effected in tne iNatnan case. A man answering in every par ticular to the description of Will Tascott, the supposed murderer of millionaire Snell, of Chicago, has been arrested at Vancouver, B. C. Tascott was in St. Paul about two weeks ago, and the police recov ered a ring from a pawnbroker which he had pawned there. Ho was afterward traced to Winnipeg, and it is said was very sociable during his stay at the Whelan house in that city. He told Mr. Whelan about his travels, and left a card giving his address in Chicago, also his address in Seattle, and said that as a commercial trav eler he had made a lot of monev recently and was traveling around viewing the continent. He left a St. Paul paper at the hotel, with an account ofthe murder therein. He took pagjgby the west train for VancouVer-Son the 23d ult., taking the train at midnight. Mr. Whelan, on reading the descrip tion of Tascott, published a few days after, had his suspicions, and the police have since been endeav oring to trace the fugitive. The ticket agent of the Canadian Pa cific says that a man answering Tascott's description purchased a ticket for Viotoria on the date above mentioned. A detective left Winnipeg on Thursday for Vancouver. At Guy's hospital, London, re cently, was received the body of drunkard which was very "much bloated. It was found that when' punctured and a match was ap- r plieu to the gas which escaped it burned with the ordinary flame of carburetted hydrogen As many as a dozen of these fl.tmos were burning at the same tune.
