w Sbt gaflg irian- ASTOBIA. OREGON: SUNDAY. ...JUNE 2(5. 16S7 -TwnBr'i Kjaauafeta The John A. Logan subscrip tion fund has netted Mrs. Logan $63,034.45. Mes. Blaine doesn't want her husband to run for president in '88. That settles it. General Jas. Speed, ?ho died yesterday, was the last surviving member" of " President Lincoln's cabinet. During the past vfinter, -which was an unusually severe one at sea, the fish commission succeed ed in hatching thirty-five million cod eggs, bringing the young up by hand, so to speak, to the age of self-feeding adolescence, and turning them loose into the ocean. This crop will be "ripe" four or five years hence. The fish com mission will also attempt to re people Atlantic waters with hali but, the supply of this valuable food-fish having been depleted in waters where it was once com mon. The attempt will probably be made to plant the halibut in Chesapeake bay. On this north-wesfc-Pacifio coast, which is alive with valuable food-fish, an attempt will be made to classify species and secure authentic slatistics re garding .what is as yet an only partially developed industry. No matter how obscure the po sition in life of an individual, if he can read, he may, at will, put him self in the best society the world has ever seen. He may converse with the greatest heroes of the p&st; with all the writers of prose and poetry. jHe may learn how to live, so as to avoid the errors of his predecessors, and to secure blessings, present and future, to himself. He may reside in a des ert, far away from the habitations of man; in solitude, where no human . eye looks upon him with, affeotion or interest, where no human voice cheers him with animating tones ;if he has books to read, he can never be alone. He may choose his company, and the" subject of conversation, and become contented and happy, in telligent wise and good. He thus elevates his rank in the world, and becomes independent, in the best sense, of the first in impor tance, of the department of school education. A Ffcasaat Birthdsr Party. Miss Winnie Goodman gave a strawberry party last "Wednesday evening, the occasion being the cele bration of her 12th birthday. The youthful hostess entertained her guests, who enjoyed a pleasant after noon. Music was furnished by Mrs. P. Y. Weeks and Mrs. Fred Molson. Among those present were: Florence Elmore, Hattie Tallant, Susie El more, Nannie Reed, Hattie Kinney, -Kittie and Bessie Butter, Florence Twombly, Eliza McKean.Nellie Sher man, Callie Vaughan, Louise Tallant, Mamie Fanning, Daisy Stockton, Annie Christiansen, Pearl Holden, Winnie and Eva Goodman, Eva Mills, Nellie and Jennie Monteith, Stella Spedden, Edith and Ethel Anderson, Hila Tuoker, Buth Garner, Kittie Marion, Nettie and Nancy Tuttle, Mamie Clinton, Katie Dement, Mary Feely, Lulu Dillon, Mary Johnson, Bertie Molson and Nat Tallant. Famous Women. Madame Trebelli, the greatest of living contraltos who has traveled extensively, in fact visited every county and city of note in the world, has just departed from the slope of the Pacific, and often expressing the greatest admiration for the beauty and grandeur of our scenery and the delightful mildness of our climate, left the following written note as a living expression of her opinion in the hands of a Portland druggist, the original of which can be seen on de mand. Perhaps This Has Come In Your Mind. " I unhesitatingly add my testimony to the great bene fits to be derived from Sim mons Liver Regulator. I was afflicted lor several years with disordered Liver, which resulted in a severe attack of Jaundice. I had good medical attendance, but it failed to restore me to the enjoyment of my for mer health. I then tried the mo3t renowned physi cians of Louisville, Ivy., but all to no purpose, where upon I was induced to tiy Simmons Liver Regulator. I found immediate benefit from its use, and it ulti mately restored me to the full enjoyment of health." A. H. A brilliant dramatic season was in augurated at the Victoria last even ing by Mdlle. Ehea, supported by Mr. Arthur Forrest and a splendid company of artists. Gilbert's myth ological oomedy, "Pygmaleon and Galatea," was presented in a manner well calculated to arouso the admira tion of our theatre-goers. Rhea's conception and portrayal ot the character of Galatea showed the true a"tiftie , Her transition from the chiselled beauty of a lifeless Btatute to moving, living, breathing flesh and blood, a woman in full bloom of her womanhood, was indeed a marvellous piece of acting. Again, when it dashed upon her as yet, untrained mind, that Pygmaleon did not love her as she loved him, the wild des pairing, yet resigned look and action, betokened the true and innocent wo man. Mdlle. Rhea is an artiste such as our city &as not seen before. Fairly dividing the honors of the per formance with Mdlle. Rhea, Miss Ida Waterman as Cynisca, Pygmaleon's wire, portrayea tnis cnaraoter per fectly. Her tender, yet almost jealous, leave taking of Pygmaleon contrasted strongly with her wild, jealous rage, when, on her return, she found him to be faithless. Her acting in this scene was superb, and in pronounc ing the curse, which was to deprive Pygmalion of his sight, she was in deed the very embodiment of a wo man consumed with jealous fires. Mr. Arthur Forrest, as Pygmaleon, presented'the oharacter to the entire satisfaction of the audience Vic toria Colonist. Unnecessary Misery. Probably as much misery comes from habitual constipation as from any derangement of the functions of the body, and it is difficult to cure, for the reason that no one likes to take the medicines usually pre scribed. HAMBURG FIGS were prepared to obviate this difficulty, and they will be found pleasant to the taste of women and children. 25 cents. At all druggists. J. J. Mack & Co., proprietors. 8. F.
