P3 Wm gattij gnatwim ASTORIA. OREGON: THUBSDAY. .JUNE 2, 1SS7 President Cleveland has con tributed $10 to tho Grant monu ment fund. The United States government has provided a fund for furnishing tombstones for soldiers' and sailors' graves. The real estate sales in New York for the first four months of the year foot up in round numbers $50,000,000. TnE detectives of the country met at Moline, III, recently and organized a society, whoso aim is to do away with the "bum" de tective. There will be five contested seats in the next house of repre eotoi;trps. as the clerk has re- ceived the testimony in that num ber of cases. One of the public analysts calls attention to the necessity of con suming tinned foods on the same day that they are opened. He points out that such foods rapidly decompose. A St. Louis paper gives an ac count of a gigantic scheme to con solidate all the cattle interests of the northwest and form a company which shall control $15,000,000 worth of cattle and grazing lands. United States cavalry have been ordered to co-operate with the authorities of the land office in removing the barbed wire fences with which. cattle companies have inclosed lands belonging to the public domain. Two of the judges of the New York supreme court give as their reason for recently sentencing murderers to be hanged on other days than Friday that they want to help break up the superstition "that has brought Friday into a sort of disrepute, The Mexican government has subsidized the steamer Carlos Paclieco to carry mails between San Diego, Cal., and Ensenada de Todos Santos, Lower California. By the terms of the postal conven tion of 1861, this service will be gratuitous to the United States. Colonel Lucas, who was ap pointed United States senator from West Virginia, has been studying the constitution of that state, and finds that Judge Faulk ner, who was recently elected sen ator by the legislature is probably ineligible on account of a section which provides that no judge, dur ing his continuance in office, shall be eligible to any political office. - At the postal card factory in Castleton, Pa., between two and three tons of postal cards a day are manufactured the year round. The largest order ever filled for one city was 4,000,000 cards, or about twelve tons of paper, for New York city where they use about 6,000,000 cards a month. Chicago comes next, with about 3,000,000 cards in the same period. There are 450,000,000 manufac tured annually. Two-cent post age did not lessen the use of postal cards, but checkod tho growth of their use for some little time. The check has been over come and 'the public are using more and more postal cards every day. Says a San Francisco dispatch: Continual additions to the force of employes on the California &" Ore gon extension have run the num ber of men on the construction pay roll up to nearly 5,000.- This great army of "nav.vies" is distrib uted all along the line in Oregon, nearly as far north as Ashland. It is-deemed necessary by the rail road company to keep as large a force there as can be worked to advantage, as the work is of the heaviest- character. Between the summit and Ashland there will be two enormous loops. The actual distance is only fourteen miles, hut the rail distance will be about twntythree miles. The circular of the committee of English holders of confederate bonds is deliriously cool in its as sumption that thero is a strong sentiment in the United States in favor of paying the debt of a col lapsed secessia. The circular Bays: "It is the duty of tho gen eral government at Washington to assume the obligation of payment." It then goes on to state: "Steps of an important nature are now contemplated by your committee, which it is not in the interest of the bondholders now to state; but counsel is of the opinion that they will result in the committee ob taining authority from the next session of the United States con gress to raise the whole question by a suit in "the court of claims." Ex-Minister Thornton is even said to be in "Washington with a view of informing the United States government that Salisbury's min istry will hold it responsible for the Virginia debt to English bond holders. No more preposterous idea could be entertained, and the British government has not in all probability put itself in the ridio ulous attitude of making such a demand. A Salmon Dance. The Indians residing on the Yaki ma reservation, below the gap, "held one of their annual pnm-pumps or tumanimns dances in their medicine house on Sunday last. The dance and accompanying weird incantations were for the purpose of propitiating the good spirit, and in supplication for a bountiful run of the Chinook salmon. The lodge, a low structure about seventy feet in length was covered with tule matting, and in this were two hnndred bucks, squaws ana papooses. lantastioally clad, and painted m all colors of the rainbow. The dance was under the direction of Ko-ti-as-oan, one of the head medicine men. For hours the Indians danced and 'chanted their monotonous songs, until tired nature asserted itself and they would fall on their knees and offer up their "amena" to the exhortations of the medicine man. Yakima Signal. Ingersoll en Prohibition. (From the Galveston News. A young gentleman of this city with the prohibition question very much at heart, and who has been a diligent peru ser of editorials upon the subject, re cently wrote to Col. Kobert G. Ingersoll, desiring to know if the latter aotually advocated prohibition, inclosing with the l6tter a newspaper article to thateffeot. To this query the following epigram matic and characteristic answer was re ceived: "Wabhdjotok, May 19. My Dear Young Friend: I was never a prohibitionist never have believed in sumptuary legisla tionbut have always advocated the great est individual liberty. The editor ia mis taken. The trouble with prohibition is that it fills the country with spies makes neighbors suspicious of each other fills the community with meddlers with peo ple who poke their impudent ndses into the business of others. Besides, prohi bition does not prohibit it does not even prohibit the prohibitionists. Yours trulv, K. O. Ikqkbsoll. Their Business Booming:.
