The almost total extinction of tho beaver in North America has induced an experiment in Canada at raising these valuable little an imals for commercial purposes. The only wonder is that it has not been tried hefore. 1 ne beaver is intelligent and easily tamed, and probably but little difficulty would be found in breeding it and reduc ing it to a condition of scmi-do- mesticity, in whicu it would he come commercially valuable. There would always be a market for its fine, soft fur, and beaver's tail is a dainty for an epicure. There is a hint in this Canadian project for Oregonians. Beavers formerly abounded in this country, and a few survivors of ancient pop ulous communities still find homes in the coast counties. Some of these localities, which aro almost useless for other purposes on ac count of the cost and difficulty of their reclamation, would afford ex cellent sites for "beaver farms." The application of silk to ha,t making, and the rapid disappear ance of the beaver before advanc ing settlement, and the enterprise of hunters and trappers, have com bined to make beaver skins a less prominent feature of the fur mar ket than in former years; but there is no doubt that supply and de mand would react upon each other to make a good and steady market for this intrinsically valuable fur if furnished in quantities sufficient to establish quotations. It is also probable that under a system of semi-domestication the skins would be profitably marketed at a pi ice less than would compensate a trapper for the precarious result of his arduous pursuit. Some Clat sop county farmer might find it to his int rest to devote some of his spare time to experiments in this direction, and no doubt his boys would be delighted to keep him at it.
