The war on sugar rates begun by the Canadian Pacific is being extend ed into the American lines with a vengeance. There were shipped from local refineries -this week 8,000 barrels of sugar? which will go to Omaha over the Canadian Pacific and connecting lines. This enormous shipment will traverse a distance by rairand water of over three thousand miles, or nearly double that by the Central and Union Pacific, which run over land direct from this city. The rate made on the shipment is 65 cents a hundred pounds, and it is believed that the proportion re ceived by the Cauadfan Pacific is less than two mills per ton to a mile, which leaves a very small margin of profit over operating ex penses. It is the lowest rate yet made by the line to any shipper, and approximates the enormous re ductions made by the Southern Pacific company in competition with the PaciGo Mail for New York business. Notwithstanding reductions made by American overland lines, there is still a difference of 10 centsa hundred in favor of the Canadian Pacific shippers, the new trans continental rate being 75 cents a hundred pounds. There still remains among all the transcontinental lines a fear that the Canadian Pacific will cap ture the fact he coast trade ot Chicago. The fact that a syndi cate had been formed to run a line of boats hetween Port Arthur on the Canadian Pacific and Chi cago over Lakes Superior and Michigan, to compete for ail classes of Pacific coast freight, was the first signal of alarm to the American lines. As ihero are over 700 miles of cheap water transportation by this new route, the rates the Canadian "Pacific will be able to make aro calcu lated to be at least 35 per cent, lower than those of the Amercan lines. When the line is put in operation it is thought here that it will give the sharpest blow to the other routes that they havo ever received, and a grand tumble of rates will result. Will Make A Proposition. Walqa "Walla, May 9. 0; information that -president Harris and several directors of the North ern Pacific would be her,o within fifteen days, a meeting 4of farmers and citizens this afternoon adopted a proposition to offer free, right oi way and a bonus of 75,000:if the company will build a line to Wal lula Junction and agree to carry wheat to the Puget sound for $4 a ton. Ten thousand dollars was subscribed on the spot, and a com mittee was appointed to solicit the remainder. A considerable part of the right of way i? already donated. Agony is Courted B persons who, attacked by a mild form of rheumatlsnvnpglect to seek prompt relief. Subsequent torture is prevented by an im mediate resort to llostetter's Stomach Bit ters. Slight exposure, an occasional draught, will beget this painful malady, where there is a predisposition to it in the blood. It is not difficult to arrest the trouble at the outset, but well nigh Impossible to eradicate it when matured. A clean dish cloth, hang up lb dry when the work is finished, is a sight by which a good worker may be known. Many women who are rapid about their house work, fail in this one particular," and while the dish cloth may be hung up when the work is done, it is by no means always clean. Apropos of materials suitable for dish cloths, an exchange publishes the following, which is worthy of consideratien: "There is nothing better fpr dish cloths than old or cheap or part worn canton flannel. It makes a sonsiblo dish cloth wrings dry and wipes nicely." "Don't do it. 2U least stop to think of it a moment, aud you won t. Old canton flannel has been worn next the body or three seasons is not very for dish cloths, no matter that two nice how e'ean it is washed. Don't you re member what Beecher said about wrapping butter in the tails of old shirts when he was an agricultural editor, more than fort' years ago? He said he wanted at least to know whose shirts he was eating. No, no. Get always now towels for your dish clotlfs and dish wipers. No matter how cheap and coacse they are, get them. It's the only dainty way. Don't let any old shirt gussets or drawer legs come near the diahes off which you eat your food. Be particular about whose shirt you arc eating." Thought to Bo a Slaver. "Washington, May 9. It comes out to day that the United States corvette Alliance, captain Mac Gregor, which left New York last November, has a secret mission to perform. She is ordered to seize the schooner Emma Jane and make prisoners of her master and crew and send her to the United States in charge of a prize crew. The seizure. $s ordered uponri, ports that after fitting out in the United States as a whaler, she was taken, contrary to orders, to Joa hanna Island on the coast of Ma sambique and sold for a trifle to Dr. "Wilson, a planter.
