TnE tax on natural gas pipes in Pittsburg is reported to exceed $1,500,000 per annum", indicating & marvelous rate of expansion in the natural gas industry. . Among the assets mentioned in the -will of Captain James B. Eads, is a claim of. $1,000,000 on the United States -jrovernment for maintaining a jetty channel at the mouth of the Mississippi. It is reported that the sum of $200,000,000 is due from England to France under the treaty of No yember 20, 1815. A committee of the chamber of deputies is now investigating the subject, with the' view of demanding payment. The list of members of the fif tieth congress presents a number of presidential names. There is a Washington, an Adams, a Tay lor and a Hayes. "Washington, who is from Tennessee, will be the first of the name to sit in congress. ti Theee is a little boom for Wm. B. Allison, oNIowa, as a probable Republican -presidential nominee. From former acquaintance with the aforesaid it is believed that he is not the msm to pocket or other wise veto a properly constructed river and harbor bill. To meet the growing scarcity of whalebone and Its consequent in creased cost, various subhtitntes have been brought forward. Among the most recent is the em ployment of geese and turkey quills, a factory for this kind of manufacture having been estab lished in Michigan. - M The "Washington correspondent of the Cincinnati JEnquirer says: A most formidable alliance has been orgafiized to make John Sherman of Ohio, the Republican presidenlial nominee. At its front is .Simon Cameron of Pennsylva nia, and his son Don, and the lesser light is Mahone of Virginia. M Baron Noedenskjold expects to sail for the Antarctic regions about the middle of next year. He thinks the greatest difficulty in going nearer to the south pole than any one else will be in get ting coal enough. He thinks that the north pole might be reached by balloon, but wonders how the successful adventurer would get back. The problem to provide ways and means for the iotal extinction of slavery in Brazil, has undoubt edly within the last few years ab sorbed more attention than any other national question. The num ber of registered slaves in Brazil in 1885, was 1,123,228; the num cer must now be under 1,000,000, or more than one-third less than the number three years ago. Slavery in Brazil can only last a few years more. The receipts of wheat from Oregon, says the JBicUetint from, July 1, 1886, to March 26,. 1887, were equivalent to 603,710 centals wheat, against 1,508,756 for the same time in the previous harvest year. Most of the wheat received from Oregon has been reshipped to Europe. In 1885-86, the difference in freight between Portland and Europe and San Francisco and Europe made it profitable to send about 75,000 tons wheat to this port for reshipment to Europe. In the current cereal year, this advantage has been immaterial, and hence less Oregon wheat has gone to Europe by way of San Francisco. The new schedule of freights has been received at the Astoria office of the O. K.J &N.Co. The members of the Stuttz Dra matic company, who were injured by the upsetting ot a stage on the Sis kiyou mountains last Tuesday night, are housed in a tumble-down cabin near the summit of the mountains, about twelve miles south of Ashland. The cabin was oooupied by a poor family, who generously surrendered it to the wounded strangers. It con tained only one bed and very few of the necessities of life. For a person in good health the situation of sleep ing on the floor with only enough to eat to sustain life, was bad enough, but for people seriously injured, two of them believed to be dying, the sit uation is pitiful, and calls for sym pathy. Little Ivy Stuttz and Jasper Cunningham, the driver, were injured internally, and word came to Ash land Sunday that Cunningham was not expected to live through the night. The ohild is in great pain. Her father, when he saw that the ac cident was inevitable, threw her from the stage, intending that she should strike in some fir boughs that lay at the side of the road; but he miscalcu lated the speed, and the ohild was thrown against a rocky bank. It is thought she oannot recover. Mrs. LeCompte. an elderly lady, who suf fered a fracture of the collar bone, received surgical aid. The remainder of the party are still suffering from bruises and cuts. To add to the misery and discom fort, the weather for the past four days has been terrible snow, hail and heavy ram. The roads, which a week ago were in fine condition, are now almost impassable, the stage Binking hub-deep in mud at almost every turn in the road. The man who owned the stage which upset left Ashland Sunday with provisions for the sufferers, and this is believed to be the first relief they have had from the outside. Uregoman, 12. On The "Way.
