The question of the seal fisheries of Alaska havings been taken up by the cabinet for consideration, upon a letter lately addressed to the president by L. N. Haverly& Co., of San Francisco, the attorney general ordered the United States marshal at Sitka to postpone the sale of the seized schooner jSa?i Diego until further inquiry could be made into the law and merits of the case as presented in behalf of the sealers and tra'ders by the Alaska commercial company. A crisis is pending in regard to the seal fisheries, if the govern ment intends to protect itself from spoliation at the hands of British sealers. Four of these vessels lie at Sitka for seizure for taking seals in violation of the law. In dip lomatic correspondence with En gland over the seizures, the state department maintained tho juris diction of the United States to be beyond the three-mile limit, on the principle of measuring from head land to headland, a principle which it denies stoutly when applied by Canadian authorities to bar out foreign intrusion in the bay of Fundy and adjacent waters. Secretary Bayard has pointed out to the English government that Russia asserts this principle, and dealing with foreigners on her coast has made repeated seizures of British vessels outside the three mile limit without an effective pro test from the British authorities. In diplomatic circles it is said, however, that critical relations be tween Great Britain and Russia are growing out of their diverse interests in the east, and it oper ates as a restraint upon the former power as regards these bold open sea seizures by Russian cruisers. As tho argument by Secretary Bayard to defend the position of the government in its seizure of British sealers, however, is consid ered rather smart and effective, the upshot of the cabinet consulta tion is a policy of procrastination. Nothing will be done with either the Canadian or Alaskan fisheries matter for tho present, except rev enue cutters in Alaskan waters will be instructed to keep watch on tho two sealing rookeries with in conventional limits. In Town and Hamlet The seeds of intermittent and bilious reml- tent fever germinate and bear evil fruit. No community has altogether escaped It. The reports of tho California 'fish commission indicate some in teresting results from the meas ures inaugurated by that body. Among the statements is the re port of 'Livingstone Stone, in charge of the hatchery on the McCloud river, in California. He says: "In the eleven years since the salmon-breeding station has been in operation 67,000,000,000 eggs have been taken, most of which have been distributed in the vari ous states of the Union. Several million, however, have been sent to foreign countries, including Germany, France, Great Britain, Denmarck, Russia, Belgium, Hol land, Canada, New Zealand, Aus tralia and the Sandwich Islanhs. About 15,000,000 have been hatched at the station and the young fish placed in the McCloud and other tributaries' of the Sacra mento river. So great have been the benefits of this restocking of the Sacramento that the statistics of the salmon fisheries on the Sac ramento show that the annual salmon catch of the river has in creased 5,000,000 pounds each year during the last few years." The two hatcheries at Alpine and Northville, Mich., produced in one winttr over 100,000,000 eggs' of the gWhite fish, and the fishermen of the great lakes admit that but for public fish culture half of them would have to abandon their calling. In the Potomac the annual yield of fish has been brought up by the operations of the fish commission, from 6G8,000 pounds in 1877, to an average of over 1,000,000 pounds in recent vears.
