SPSK -"- W te gaUjj gtotfatu ASTORIA. OREGON: TUESDAY Z. APEIL 5, 18S7 The friereased freight on salm on from tho Columbia river east ward will not tend to increase the can tiers' regard for the interstate commerce law, that beautiful instru ment, which the Oregon legisla ture deemed so necessary that they telegraphed positive instructions to Senators Dolph and Mitchell to vote for it. The Seattje Post-Intelligencer asserts that S. "W. Wall, the news paper man. who did the shooting in the Tacoma News office last week, shot at the editor of that paper because he had attacked the reputation and good name of Mrs. "Wall. If thig.be so he did just right. The man who wouldn't de fend his wife's honor is no man at all. The monarchs of Europe seem to believe that a lie well stuck to answers the purpose of a truth. For that reason official bulletins are issued from the various Euro pean courts stating that the rumor of a recent attempt to assassinate the czar of Russia" was without foundation. The crowned heads unite in an effort to create the im pression that his imperial highness, the ruler of all the Russias, is the darling object of adoration in the hearts of all his subjects, and that they would not suffer a hair of his head to be injured. Notwithstand ing these repeated official procla mations from the royal courts, the czar himself is not made more com fortable, for he knows that at tempts at assassination are being made and come very near being successful. But that is not the worst of-it. The czar has discov ered that there is a deep laid con spiracy throughout Europe to dethrone all the present rulers, to overthrow all forms of monarchy, and to establish constitutional gov ernment in its stead. This con spiracy is not. confined to Russia alone. It is widespread through out Europe and has a lodgment in every" European nation under monarchial government. Nor Is it confined to the reckless class of people. Its prime movers are of the upper and more intelligent classes of people. In Russia, as well as in some other countries, it extends to scions of royalty itself, and , js more prevalent in the armies than was ever hereto fore supposed. It is -no wonder that Europe is so loth to go to war when there is not a single Euro pean ruler to-day who can confide in the loyalty of his own army. The" fate-of the late Emperor Na poleon is still fresh in the minds of Europe's rulers. They sawthe im perial star of France set forever and the rise of the new republic on a foundation so stable that it prom ises to be perpetual. There is not a monarch in Europe to-day who, if called upon to lead his armies to battle against an invad ing foe, would not tremble with apprehension that the same fate which overtook Napoleon would be his, and that his kingdom would go to pieces in the same manner that tho empire of France was shattered. This apprehension. is Europe's best guard against war. But international peace does not wholly pacify the royal mind of Europe. The dread of insurrec tions and conspiracies and internal revolutions-is omnipresent. "-Tliere is no escaping the apprehension of an outburst of .socialism and nihil ism, which exists as a perpetual menace to monarchy. The crowned heads ma' proclaim peace, but there is no peace. They may issue bulletins asserting that the lives of the rulers are not in .danger, and yet these same rulers live" in hourly dread of dy namite. Adelaide Randall. An exchange speaking of-this lady, who heads the Bijou Opera Company, which appears at Boss' opera house to-night, says: "What 'kind, loving remembrances steal upon us in "God speed yous," and "come again," when we think of the delightful evenings spent in lis- tening to this vocal enchantress. A thorough artiste in every sense of the word, not suddenly foisted into noto riety by capital, but gradually, step by Btep, climbing each rung of the ladder or fame by close study to her adopted profession. And how does she stand to-day? We fail to know any prima donna that equals her in versatility. Well may it be said of her, "Adelaide Kandall holds the keys to the gates of laughter and the portals of pathos." Grand or comic opera, 'ti3 all the same to her; no effort, no strain. The poetry of mo tion, the rippling laugh, tho winsome smile, the arch look, the coyish pout, the air of distress, the sorrowful appeal, the trembling tone, the doleful wail, the re vengeful stare, the hateful gaze, the pitying lamentation, the tearful exhortation, all go to make up and complete the thorough training of a prima donna, and as such Adelaide Randall stands out as fixed and brill iant as the northeraj3tar. A gentle man remarked in our hearing that it seemed to him as though there were a gold mine in every note she sang. Her kind, gentle disposition makes her hosts of friends wherever she goes, always buoyant and cheerful, and ever ready with a kind word to those who may accost her, whether at Cape May or .Long .Branch in the summer months, or her own beauti ful villa near the banks of the Hud son, she is always engaged with a coterie of ladies and gentlemen who stand high in literature and music. and thns she gains the need fa 1 rest preparatory to her forthcoming trav eling tour. ' Heart Disease!!! Bead the hospital reports, read the mortuary reports, read the medicine publications, read the daily news papers, and learn how wide-spread is heart disease, how dilhcult of detec tion it is to most people, how manv and how sudden are deaths it causes. Then read Dr. Flint's Treatise on Heart Disease, and learn what it is, what causes it, what diseases it gives rise to, what its symptoms are, and and how it may be attacked. It you find that you have heart disease, ask your druggist for a bottle of Dr. Flint's Heart Remedy. The treatise may be had on application to J. J. MACK & CO., Nos. 9 and 11 Front street, S. F. The Face. Tho care of the complexion has bo- come an accomplishment that no lady of refined tastes can nfforu to ignore, and in leading society circles it claims as much thought as do the fashions. It is an acknowledged fact that the variations of our climate are very se vere on he complexion, noticeable by a roughness and dryness of the skin, and to counteract this effect it be comes necessary to call in the aid of art. In the selection of this agent too much care cannot be exercised. It is well known to the chemist that many of the so-called "blooms," "balms," 'creams," etc., contain lead and other poisonous substances, the long-continued use of which is dan gerous.
